One thing I would add, from my experience, pertaining to getting off the chair lift. Camber boards versus overall rocker profile boards are different. With a camber board, or at least one where the camber zone goes out to the outsides of your feet, or farther, it's not as hard and actually simpler where the board pretty much tracks straight or whichever direction you apply pressure to whether that's toeside or heelside & want to go, whereas with an overall rocker profile board, there's that tendency for it to want to start spinning. I used to just go with it, the spinning, because it's actually kind of fun, until you accidentally get in somebody's way causing them to fall, yourself, or something like that. With an overall rocker profile board, you pretty much have to keep alternating from edge to edge while going down the ramp over and over to keep it going straight, versus just the edge being the direction you want to go, that pretty much sums it up. The tip somebody else already gave on here about unloading off the chairlift with a board that has rocker between the feet (the Lib-Tech X2C one) & moving your back foot to more directly in the middle between the bindings makes sense, whereas they said they then put more weight over the front binding & are then able to use the front camber hump/zone for more traction/turning ability versus the rocker zone between your feet, which is what's causing it to have that unstable/spinny effect. Tommy rides strictly camber boards which is why he probably forgot to mention this, but that's also part of why he rides camber boards. Anyway, to sum it up, if you're riding a board with a rocker between your feet camber profile, it helps to intentionally keep switching between your edges while getting off the chairlift riding down the ramp to keep yourself going "straight" until you're ready to go where you actually really wanna' go, whether that's right or left, that way you're not taking anybody out. 👍💯

wondering if youve ever thought about doing a breakdown of how to fall on your instagram or even a full video on falling/risk taking. I never saw anyone pushing on heel side until I came out west a few years ago. I started in the 90s, and it was all "skateboard but on snow", especially on the lift to top of run part. I never had issues until I got super overweight and started losing again. I don't have a stomp pad on my current board, and I am thinking about putting one on. I think a lot of people struggle(myself included currently) with the "free foot" riding because you try to minimize the time spent without both feet secured. I'm thinking after the next snow fall here before the plows go through, I might just get my board on and "skate" around the yard/driveway/sidewalk so hopefully next time I'm on the mountain I don't fall in the (thankfully empty) lift line again. Good vid Tommie, I look forward to a more advanced "1 footed" video

@@tommiebennett I think I pinpointed my biggest current deficiency. Do you have any quick tips for riding toeside switch?
@willdykema
@willdykema 3 года назад
@@MarkMc70 I know you asked tommie but in case he doesn't get to it heres a few things. The first is to just try and mimic everything you do riding regular (but you probably have already heard that). More specifically think about your posture and your weight a lot more. What I mean by that is to stack your body position and really bend your knees to have good posture. On the weight side of things I mean to be conscious of your weight being farther over your front foot for skidded turns and wieght in between both feet for carved turns. So Posture and Weight are the two things I tell myself while riding switch.
@MarkMc70
@MarkMc70 3 года назад
@@willdykema thanks a million. I will try to be conscious of that. I guess if I can get the weight forward and down toward the front heel off the toe side switch I can then skid the turn out rather that confront a slower rolling roller coaster turn that could have consequences. Haha. Skidding switch on the toeside with my left foot is a new movement for me at 10 days total. (Actually what I first mentioned was a heel side turn off of toeside, which is also more intimidating in person on the snow than it looks watching these videos over the quarantine from my couch. I will think about doing the same thing I usually do, and take it down a notch when it comes to terrain.)

One thing I wish that was covered was how do you skate on your toe side edge. I am finally to the point that I don’t look like a baby deer everytime I get off the lift but pretty much all of my snowboarding is on smaller mountains in PA and some of them tend to have very short runs from exit of chair lift to all the beautiful people on the mountain. I can heel side turn okay but sometimes I need to turn right instead of left (I ride regular). Also wanted to mention that your videos have made my experience so much more fun with my boys. Love the content and keep it coming.

I like bringing my foot to the front binding, helps me go straight. I lose a bit of control by moving to the back binding because my leg gets to do more work. By going to my front binding I put my weight on my front leg which helps getting off the lift. I guess things don't really work the same for everyone. If you're new and happen to read this, follow this guy... he has amazing beginner videos.

I did notice when you were talking about pushing from toe side or heel side and I notice that women are alot of the time more comfortable pushing from toe side. Also I have always taught my students to let the chair push them down the ramp. As beginners, speed is scary, so wouldn't you say its safer than pushing off the chair? Also when off loading I like to tell my guests to use the chair for balance and put front foot down and get stable before setting the back foot. Would love to read your thoughts on this
@RanPeleg
@RanPeleg 3 года назад
I'm a beginner and this is how I started with the chair lift. Put front foot down, then the back foot while holding the chair to get balance, and just let the chair push me forward while I try to maintain my balance. At some point I'll get separated from the chair and continue on. Some sites have flat grounds and some have slight slopes at the exit so it can be a bit scary first time. I never tried hopping off the chair like Tommie suggested, but I might try that once I get more confident. Before actually getting on the chair lift I'd do some 1 leg practice runs on the starter slopes.. but it's usually quite icy so it's hard I fell a couple of times exiting the chair lift.. and it's quite embarrassing..

I feel your pain!! I really struggled with drags for years until a friend said to put my trailing arm pointing behind me down the slope...so essentially your lead hand is holding the drag and the back arm is pointing down the slope. This works great to help get over that initial 'pull' when the freaking thing tries to launch you up the slope but also great to do as you're going up. Literally the first time I tried his suggestion, I did my first drag...one that I'd failed to do at least 6 times before.
