Snowden recommends THIS operating system: Tails

If you want more privacy on the internet, the operating system you choose plays a crucial role.
We’ve all heard of Windows and Mac, but the "Tails" operating system puts privacy first. Snowden, Glenn Greenwald, and Laura Poitras swear by it.
Tails aims to "do the right thing" right out of the box by default, to protect less tech-savvy users from the most likely and highest impact risks to their privacy.
On of the most interesting aspects:
It wipes the memory of the system every time you log off, leaving no trace of what was done on the computer. You run if from a USB stick, and it doesn't affect anything else on your computer.
To be clear, this isn't going to be your every day system: It's an extreme privacy measure for high risk people like activists and journalists. But if you don't like the idea of everything you do on the internet being monitored, this might be an option to try out.
I'll walk you through how to install Tails, how to use it, and will go over important warnings you need to know when using it.
00:00 - What is Tails?
02:52 - How to Install Tails
06:29 - How to Use TAILS
07:00 - Important Warnings
07:53 - My Takeaways
Give Tails a try, you might be pleasantly surprised.

A lot of people get angry because of deleted comments. To be clear, it is rare that I will delete a comment: I delete spammers and particularly egregious jerks ;) But 99% of the time the comments disappear of their own accord and I'm not sure why. Likely because they're filtered by some kind of RU-vid algorithm or firewall that blocks comments from VPNs or something like that, but I have nothing to do with it. If your comment disappears, try posting again until it sticks! Good luck!

Didn’t Snowden also recommend signal and then it turned out to be stated by the cia?

@@askquestions4634 No, there is no evidence Signal has anything to do with any government agency. Signal is one of the best private messaging apps and recommended by security experts all over the world, and Moxie Marlinspike is a true cypherpunk.

I have had comments disappear on other channels. Seconds after leaving my comment, I would refresh the page, and my comment would be gone. It would not even be in youtube's history. Please forgive me for writing that I am pleased to learn that I am not alone here.

Yea, youtube deletes comments all the time. A lot of it is because of swearing. I've copy pasted many comments multiple times, each time making it more and more kids friendly until it's finally allowed to stay. It's really embarrassing when someone talks back to you and your only allowed response is "well, you're a peepeehead"

Ehhhh I would look further into Snowden. He’s not what you think. You know how Facebook just got caught faking a whistleblower? Snowden may or may not be the same. You see, if you trick the masses into thinking they have someone on their side on the inside or with insider knowledge, or gives them hope and they don’t look further and do their own work. They get their ideas from the top still.

Would it be better to run Tails off of a DVD-R since the data in theory can’t be modified so each time you boot up you know your OS hasn’t been compromised via a previous session?
@timetriad6199

You should be able to run Tails in multiple VMs to switch between different tasks if we use the personal email and whistleblower email example. You could easily reboot one of them while still working in the “whistleblower email”, and then switch to another Tails VM to perform a different Internet task.

for those that are not computer savvy if you are trying to boot tails from a PC instead of a Mac, you will want to hit the Esc or F12 key (there should be a manufacture logo with which one it is below it) as that will take you to the Boot menu/Grub. Also funny thing is running an OS from a USB stick is nothing new in the Linux world (which is what Tails is based on) it's called a "Live Boot Environment". It's used by other distros as a place for new users to poke around without permanently breaking the OS which they can install later (usually with a icon on the desktop). Tails just takes away the ability to install the OS on a permanent HDD/SSD and specifically gives you the ability to save data to the live boot environment (I think ubuntu can do this too).

All linux versions can do that just add a small pertition on the usb disk and You start from usb and can download on USB but tails works on USB so thocs computers with USB1 or USB2 then tails works slow, tor itself is slow due to the routing that tor does.

@MrUploader14 Год назад
@@stefaancodde6578 the only distros that are able to save to the USB stick are Ubuntu based and even then most distros disable it by default. Unlike tails and Ubuntu, distros like Linux mint and Popos actively disable it as the boot environment is intended to be a place a user to poke around and play with Linux and not have to worry about breaking and having to reinstall their os.

If one is a bit more computer savvy, I know with linux and Windows pc's you can actually set in your bios that the computer first tries to boot up the usb, if nothing is connected in the usb, then it boots the hard drive. That way you just plug in and start up the computer, if the usb is plugged in, it automatically boots off of it first. If you are using something on Usb alot, it saves a lot of irration of trying to bash keys or if interrupted when starting that you don't have to restart the computer because you missed your window of oppotunity to bash a key. I've been inturpted more than on a few occasions when trying to boot off a external Hard drive or usb.

This is great feedback, I'll try to do a video on Qubes. I don't know much about Kodachi though!

Couldn't we transfer documents over to a USB for "permanent" storage? Love your work Naomi 🥰

Will do Naomi, whatever you say I'll do. Sounds like a perfect solution!

In your installation you seem to be assuming all computers are from Apple. Installation on non-Apple computers is different. For example, the boot device select could be F2 or F8. Otherwise, thank you very much. More people should know they have options.

So, persistent storage is saved to the Tails USB rather than the computer itself...?

So if stuff is deleted, how do you know it ever existed?

As a former hacker I can only agree, Tails is really good - U will allways know exactly what is installed and all temporary files is deleted (file overwritten with binary zero's).

"Options" or "out" keys???? As a Windows user, I have no idea what you are talking about. Would have been helpful if you had mentioned what key to use in Windows.

Does Tails only delete files I worked on with Tails, or all the files on the computer?
@NaomiBrockwellTV
@NaomiBrockwellTV 2 года назад
Just anything downloaded during the tails session unless you enable persistent storage and store it in that persistent folder

Correct me if I am wrong. Windows 10 EULA updated comes with Microsoft right to either delete or block any undesirable app.

Not sure if you watched the video or not. The OS isn't installed in Windows, The "install" is just the flash drive being configured to be bootable, and Tails gets put on it. When Tails is in use, the computer boots from Tails OS. Windows can't do anything because it isn't running. When Tails isn't in use, the USB flash drive isn't to be plugged in, so WIndows can't access it. Also, Windows does not just start deleting files on USB flash drives.

I would like to point out that the type of usb you use can impact the speed.. using oldschool usb 1.0 is gonna be slow while using 3.0 and above is much faster. If you were to install the OS itself off the usb onto the hard drive it could also be faster. Also the command line is not that intimidating.. you can literally just use "dd" to copy your if (input file) to the of (output file).. diskutils is to list the drives so you make sure you type the right one.. tails is a great os

I have Tails installed on a USB with a hardware "Write Protected" switch. I use "Kanguru Flash Blu30" USB 3.0. Install Tails on both a "Write Protected" USB and on a standard USB. Add "Persistence" only to the standard USB. With both USB's plugged in, Boot from the "Write Protected" USB and sign in to "Persistence" on the standard USB. When Tails has an update, turn the "Write Protection" off to install the update, then turn the "Write Protect" back on. When your "Operating System" is hardware "Write Protected" malware can not be written to your system USB.

So, what distinguishes Tails from a hardened Linux running Tor on a live USB stick? You can, I think, do this with Most Linux OS's, (not UBUNTU), that do not run systemd, less so it's older cousin audio process; Pulseaudio (Hate that thing!). Nicely presented though, You are an asset to us all and our rights to privacy and self-determination in the digital realms.
