SNS 147 Part 1: Chuck TIR, HBM Drill&Tap, Load Cell, Auction Score, Family Party

In part 1 I have quite a mix-up of content. I'll start off by sharing some tools I picked up from an individual who went to a machine shop auction. Next I show another smoked turkey for my family Christmas party, and then ride over and meet the family.
For the shop content I have another test of the new chuck arbor and the new Rohm drill chuck, this time in a machine spindle. After that we have some HMB drilling and tapping, and last will be a clip of testing out our new load cell for the first time to see how much a shaft and gear weighs.
Hope you enjoy!

Man Adam, that turkey looked awesome. Making us all HUNGRY!!! Great party, great folks, wonderful family. What a bunch of great food. Love your aunt who calls you "Adam Baby" still - what a hoot. What a spread - wow! Great tools, excellent score at the flea market. Another fantastic action packed SNS. Cool geared shaft too.

Adam your family really looks great, all my family was mom and aunts and uncles on my moms side as mom and dad separated early - all wonderful people who treated me better than I deserved - but alas theyre all are gone now and seeing your family really brought back great memories and reminded me how much I miss them all. You are truly blessed Adam, you have what everyone should have and many long for so count your blessings every day and never feel like you are not rich in the best way possible.

Enjoy your SNS videos. Thanks ! When I was a machinist apprentice working with an old German tool maker, he stressed that one should always tighten all three holes on a drill chuck, to significantly reduce the chances of the bit slipping. I've practiced that habit for 50+ yrs and seldom ever have a bit slip. I own two machine shops for the past 40 yrs, and have & have had a number of employees. Those who practice the habit of tightening all three holes, have drills with nice smooth, un-scarred shanks. Try it - you'll be pleasantly amazed how much is helps. Hope this helps. Cheers!

Adam, I must commend you on bringing your RU-vid family into your personal family's Christmas celebration. It is a wonderful thing when creators open up their lives like this. I think most of use watch videos from people like you and feel we have a "bond" for lack of a better term, after all you are opening up part of your life to us to show us things we might not have ever seen in our lives. By bringing in family we see the person you are and not just the knowledge you know. Thank you, be safe and have a Merry Christmas!

That turkey looks amazing man, I am also an amateur at cooking whole turkeys. The last few years I have been deep frying mine and the family seems to love i,. now my wife won't let me make it any other way. I may buy an extra next year and give it a try, those temps are tough to get right tho. Keep up the great work, it's nice to see that tight tolerances and clean, technical parts can still be done manually. It's awesome that you use dial indicators instead of DROs in your home shop, nowadays it seems like everything has to be digital or electronic and have that China Export sticker on it. Thanks for putting the time in and sharing your knowledge man.

You showed several sized items to use as gauges for estimating. I was 184.9 lbs under on my guess ---11" X 55" shaft, 30" X 8" gear and 18" dia. bearings X 11" stack of all 4 bearings and I used 495 lbs./cu. ft. for steel weight. Adam, that was a very nice tool score and a wonderful Christmas Party! Thanks for the video, keep them coming. ....13

@matman7546
@matman7546 7 лет назад
I have always tightened drill chucks with all three holes. Seems to work better. No matter how tight you get it with the first hole, it always seems to move with the second and third hole. Perhaps something to do with the sleeve flexing. I also usually modify the key with a longer and larger diameter bar. I hate those little wimpy keys that they come with.
@mackasack
@mackasack 7 лет назад
I was taught to tighten three holes and one more!
@Gottenhimfella
@Gottenhimfella 7 лет назад
I think it's because each hole forces the sleeve across to take up its clearance on the chuck body from a different direction, so when you go the the next hole you get another bite at taking up the clearance. And as you follow around the holes, the sleeve allows you to grab a bit more tightening with each successive repositioning of the sleeve. Kind of like nutating.

Hey Adam, another great video! However, I just gotta comment that this vid contains three of my pet peeves. First, I cn't believe how many guys , even pro's like yourself don't tighten their three jaw chucks in all three positions. God, or whoever designed them, built those chucks with three positions to tighten down on the piston that push the jaws together. Tightening only one puts uneven pressure on the ring (or ball bearings) which actually squeeze the jaws together resulting in uneven and reduced pressure on the tool. You can see this for yourself by indicating the tool. Not only is the clamping pressure reduced, but the jaws clamping unevenly can't hold the tool evenly. You can always tell an uninformed workman by the grooves in his drill bit shanks, and by the bent handle of the chuck wrench from over tightening. Secondly, applying excessive force when using a single flute countersink. The uneven side force on the tool tends to deflect not only the tool, but also the workpiece, the chuck, and the machine spindle shaft. Subjecting these parts to such extreme forces can actually bend and deform them. Even on such large and ridged machines as your shop's horizontal boring machine you can plainly see the tool and spindle deflecting. I keep my single flute countersinks in a flexible self-centering chuck for use in any machine. Thirdly, although I'm probably the world's worst cook (if I can't microwave it, I can't cook it), watching you or someone else achieve such great success with BBQing or smoking meats makes me feel so inadequate. Same goes for watching your machining prowess. I am not worthy... peace-out..Tc

Great episode buddy! Loads of great content. Can't wait to see the new carport actually, that will be fun to see. Always love seeing family time in the videos and its awesome to see everyone enjoying being on camera. Just makes me smile. My guess on the shaft and gear was initially 3100 but then changed it to double that. Looks like my first guess was far closer than I thought. Still one HEAVY son of a gun though. Are you going to film the press work in a future video? The big boy presswork is ALWAYS awesome to see and this one will be especially impressive! Do you think this one will take a lot of heat like the last big shaft job?
@Abom79
@Abom79 7 лет назад
