I love this. I don't really listen to techno, I'm more into industrial and ambient, but I still found SO much of this to be insanely helpful. Your approach to music itself, being thoughtful about the relationship between the parts - this is lo-fi so let the hats anchor it - it's really universally applicable in any kind of electronic music.

It's such a good set of plugins. From a basic effects stance you have all bases covered. They are super high quality with a great "Sound Toy's signature sound" to them. You allso have some more uncommon effects like tape delay, the double filter and some others what can bring some more unique sounds to your music. The thing I love most about them, every single one of their plugins, even their more standard effects have at least one or two really unusual peramiters to play with that you'll struggle to find anywhere else on the same effect type, at least not as a single button or knob if you can find something else that does it at all. They really do make for some novel results.

Good tricks. I don't use decapitor, but I use the D16 group's Devastor, basically it's harmonic saturation (going to Distortion). I heard people say about samples, if they are broken, break them more ... 8-bit reduction is good for that too (Decimort).
@OscarUnderdog
@OscarUnderdog 3 года назад
Right! I use their Redoptor, and also the input gain on decimort leads to heavy distortion too. Have been on the fence about Devastor - you recommend it?

I tried this kind of kick but with extra dynamic, not so squashed, and this sounds way more powerful compared at the same perceived volume that a super compressed thing. Kicks just got bigger impact and have a real punch that contrast with the rumble. Just a matter of taste tho, but always good to share to people that feel curious and want to try at least one to compare. Take time to get the right dynamic, but this really sounds good in both way. And even on hard music, I like to get dynamic things even tho I need to turn volume up when djing. Anyway, good tips here, looking your vids for few days, interesting point of view and advices!

It's great to see videos about industrial music! Would suggest you study some of Tactical Sekt's songs, like Faded Prophecy. They are usually very rich in melodies and bass lines but can't figure them out. For example, in Faded Prophecy the drums and bassline start at 0:16 but can't really figure out how is the bassline shaped.

(fwiw) @ 5:00 +Could be worth mentioning: it appears "RumbleHigh" track's delay time seems to have been changed as well; and specifically to another different odd-number value, [1] & [1] in this case (from the looks of it), which imho is the main contributing factor influencing the groove of this particular track/sound and how it contrasts with its 'other-half' so to speak. Definitely not a big deal really at all. Just a sort of glossed over point I happened to notice/be curious about, plus I figured someone may benefit from the minimal effort either way! Awesome video btw, seriously, genuinely, thank you for everything you do! 👏😁💯

Yeah they arn't cheap! I remeber when I started to buy legit versions of all the pirated plugins I used and the pricetag on a few made me almost change my mind lol. There was an emulated digital Lexicon reverb I used to love the sound of (seriously the cleanest vst reverb plugin I'd ever heard). When I went to buy it and realised it was about £2000 for a single program all of a sudden it didn't sound so good anymore. 😂 You get such a better experiance with the licenced versions of most complex plug ins tho, especially sound toys as the cracked versions would regulary crash. It's also not fair to use them for free forever, as without payment from anyone they don't make any plug ins at all. To try out a load of diferant ones to see what you like, as a broke novice I think it's ok. But if you find yourself using one a lot, it's much better for everyone to go and buy a real copy after. No excuses for professionals to still be using cracked stuff tho imo. It just doesn't make sence for a novice to shell out 2 grand for a couple of EQs and Filters or for a single reverb if all they wanna do is play with them a handful of times. Totally differant if you use them everyday and make a living off the back of them though. Excuse the tangent lol

But you have side-chained what effect to what what key input? "...And I've applied an LFO" - Similarly, what effect/parameter are you applying the LFO to?

@@OscarUnderdog Ah I grew up on cubase so missed out on the cool ableton built in stuff, although I have wired ableton to run through cubase before specifically so I could use an effect from live in the middle of a effects chain on cubase without having to constantly bounce audio over and over every time I changed something 😏. It's a pain to keep track of everything (especially with my worrk flow) when your tune is spread across two DAWs so I tend to only do that if there's no other way to get what I'm looking for (via bounce to audio and import etc). It's also been a few too many years since I produced anything seriously so am a little out of touch on all the fun new stuff that's come out in the last 5-10 years (mby not quite ten as I've dabbled here and there since). It makes me excited to get back into it tho, as do these vids hehe.

@OscarUnderdog
@OscarUnderdog 3 года назад
You're totally right, there is some overlap, and there is the risk of having a terrifyingly messy low end 😂 BUT: a bit of mess isn't bad, a bit of masking isn't a drama, and a bit of overlap is not necessarily your enemy. You're right to be mindful of it and to try to ensure the low end stays coherent, but it doesn't need to be too clean either.

Yep! Its similar but this way you can resample them more easily, which you will want to do later (if you watch the 2nd video in the series). In general, it's also just a good idea to pay extra attention to those layers as their own instrument, so they deserve some extra real estate :)
