So…does water ruin starter locs? (read comments)

Telling someone that washing their locs ruins the starter process is one of the worst pieces of advice you can give them!
Firstly, washing your locs actually speeds along the locking process as water naturally does this for you! (even if it undoes the clean styled look a bit)
Secondly, not washing your hair will cause a lot of build up to accumulate in your locs (sebum and dirt build up specifically)😬
Lastly, unraveling is just a part of the process. There are things you can do to minimize it, like retwisting every 2-3 weeks (only during the starter stage) but it’s something that will happen and compromising the health of your locs and scalp because of it, is not worth it 🙅🏿

You need to get a water spray bottle and spray it over your lots. In the morning when you wake up and first remove your Durag and in the evening just before you put on your Durag to wrap your locs for the night before you go to sleep. This is process is called “Misting”. Spraying/Misting in the morning allows your locs to be moisturised during the day. Spraying/Misting in the evening allows your locs to be moisturised during the night. Putting your durag on straight after you Spray/Mist in the evening allows the moistures to be locked in to your locs and scalp. This avoids dryness and overall helps with growth as well. 👍🏾🙏🏾 let me know if this works for you

Was jus about to comment essentially this same thing lol. Have had dreads for 8 years 🦾. There’s a very common misconception that either you don’t wash ya hair AT ALL wen u have dreads (wtf?) or that u can’t wash em while they’re starter locs. Whole time washing your hair promotes and speeds up locking. This is why I encourage people to research from reputable places or people who have that knowledge themselves so they don’t go off hearsay or bad sources that make Them either damage their hair or make Various other mistakes. Edit: and yea you’re right completely. It’s jus apart of the process. What I recommend is washing on retwist days for ppl with starter locs if anybody sees this. So washing and then getting your retwist after, but If you’re going to a shop to get your hair done they’ll usually do that for u unless u specifically say u alr did it. And even then they’ll still ask u if u want another wash usually.

The answer to this question is that everyone is different, and the hair is going to loc differently. Those with a tighter curl pattern are going to loc faster than those with softer thinner hair. Another thing to consider is if you are training them in between washings. Do you want "cosmetic" uniform ones or more freeform? I'm 23 years into this. I couldn't get mine wet first. They came all the way loose. After getting them redone, I twisted (trained) them every day. They loc'd much faster that way.

Spraying locs and rubbing a warm rag over your parts and scalps is totally different than a wash. And it's somewhat necessary depending on how active a person is before the 6-8 week mark. Ideally, you should be getting your starters retwisted once a month anyway, depending on your texture, and that should come with a wash and conditioning.

it all depends on how quickly your hair will look. The more loose your hair is the harder it is to lock the more coarse your hair is the easier it is the lock so if your hair is loose or is it just that you don’t wash your hair for at least one month and this is the deep cleaning you’re still supposed to do a gentle wash and you can do that with a do rag and a wig cap to keep everything from getting too loose. And then you let it dry on the blow dryer. After the lock phase is over though you go to wash anytime you want to. Please don’t walk around with the locks on my like bullshit

You didn’t ruin them at all because even if you didn’t wash them without an actual fresh re-twist they would’ve looked like that

It's always better to wash them, you ruined them when you don't wash them and they won't set properly

I believe the video was made with a sarcastic tone, hence the quotes and the emoji at the end of the statement. HOWEVER, if I'm wrong, please wash your hair! Clean hair grows faster and it locs quicker. If you don't want to do a full wash, at least run water through your hair. Air dry or use a cotton shirt to dry your hair. Oil/moisturize your scalp. Most importantly, drink lots of water. Lack of water cause dehydration and dry scalp/irritation. Water is your best friend.

@@r3birthr3ap3r4 your hair collects sweat, dirt, and everything else the air has to offer. Dirt hinders growth in your scalps pores just like with your skin so keeping your hair clean, conditioned, and moisturized makes a big difference!

@@jesusisking3722 I only say wash cause I condition often but I 100% believe that water alone could do the job 👍🏽😇
