The industry is on the verge of collapse. The embrace of streaming and their short term recruiting approach (sign viral sensations and folks that resemble their sound and aesthetics) it's starting to catch up to them
I think another factor for the similar and poor sales is the fact that a lot of these ladies are making the same three songs. The three topics revolve around: being rich, their man or sexual conquest, or their body. It’s one thing to have these songs as singles but the majority of the project being one dimensional and with average lyrics and spotty lyricism just tires the mind. We understand your love for your social status, but tell us about you. Show us your diversity beyond twerk anthems.
Especially when people are going through a general recession 😅 idk man many of my peers are struggling to pay rent, do we really need to listen to rappers bragging about being filthy rich…?
Let’s be honest, most people don’t wanna hear songs about female empowerment, how corrupt the government is or how they value marriage. Let’s be honest. Y’all say, you’re tired of the subject matter in hip-hop but you don’t listen to the more positive songs. At this point saying album sales are low because of the same topics is a very flimsy argument.

@@OgO1561 Right, but many get it free. Thats why movies, music, etc are way down in sales. Most movies are online right after they drop. They loose millions in box office. Artists aren’t selling like they use to because millions download for free. People use to sell over a million albums the first week. Now 100,000 is considered good. That use to be bad. People who should sell still sell enough, but they would sell so much more, if it wasn’t so easy to get it free.
Let’s be honest, who would waste their money on these half baked lazy projects though? A lot of these projects are just poor quality and not worth the investment
Music sells over time. A high first week charting does not beat an album on the charts for months. You want your album to go gold, platinum, or Multi platinum. Many albums that don’t chart high first week outsell albums that do.
I personally loved Lattos album, I feel like concept/story/visuals get lost in female rap projects sometimes and Latto fully delivered on that. I didnt even listen to her like THAT before this album. Genuinely I just thought she was a pretty girl who raps sometimes but this changed that. I go back to it a lot cus it has a little bit of everything rap, some more rnb tracks and even more radio friendly stuff like the Ciara feature and Megan one. Georgia Peach was an amazing opener and you can tell she took the time to make sure the feel of the album gets across. What I think works against Latto a little bit is she hasn't found that crossover pop/rap audience like Nicki did and Meg and Ice Spice have. This is prob cus of TikTok. Meg is also really good at marketing herself on Social Media. Something I see Latto is trying to do and hopefully she gets there! While Megan prob has the best lyricism out of the new mainstream rap girls , sometimes her flow can sound similar and while she puts on a concept in visuals/album art it gets lost in the music and track listing etc. I think sometimes the album can have filler. I love Megans earlier work as Tina Snow. Doja is great too but Scarlet was hindered cus she was acting like she hated her fanbase and like she was 'above' them. Not to mention her n*zi shirt. It did reflect in sales and album discussion cus Planet H.E.R sold WAY more. Your fanbase is everything, this is why Nicki is able to do what she does.
I agree the girls are giving visuals and concept but something I would argue is that these recent projects don’t really provide much variety in terms of actual subject matter in its lyrics. Not to say you have to be required to but it’s just something to consider. Megan does this a little bit better than Latto, and we know Nicki provided this already in her discography. While I did like Megan the album I think that there is still some dissonance in what it means to be vulnerable or in tune with her emotions to execute those lyrics effectively. Not to say she isn’t providing it but with some of the emotional songs in the album I didn’t really feel the beat was appropriate to capture the emotion, and then u also had in certain other songs certain lyrics that made u pause but the rest of the lyrics make them look out of place. I think with Megan and Traumazine, Megan is still learning what it means to provide to be vulnerable on tracks, and I respect it while also acknowledging it does need some work.
I think the stupid beefs are also a problem. These women need to just focus on their craft and focus on the success they want to achieve. Stop asking for collabs and get in the studio and get creative.
I am tired of talking about first week sales. Seriously. I am a listener. I am not A&R, I’m not a studio head, I’m not a manager. I am here for the quality of music and the quality of music alone. That is what will stand the test of time..when Cudi’s Man on The Moon II came out in 2010 I remember everyone calling it a flop and totally downplaying his art. Fast forward 14/15 years later? Cudi is considered to be one of the most influential rappers/artists of his era. Without him there would be no Teezo Touchdown. There would be no Don Toliver. No Travis Scott. So this numbers conversation on social media is for the birds to me.
Tell me out of all these girls albums which one will stand the test of time. You make a great point but for the wrong audience this music does not have substance it’s BAD music.

Colorism & lack of audience, she puts in the work and the versatility & artistry is there. She’s got the full package she’s just not getting afforded the same opportunities in as big of a scale. Her audience seems very hair assed, in and out. They’re not keeping up with her consistency imo
I think people really like persona. They buy into the artist themselves, not just the music or how talented they are. Doechii is super talented she just gotta let the world know who she is, what makes her different personality wise and nurture that fan base.
I like her but I think her audience is mixed. Block boy with Kodak is different from Pacer. She’s creative but she doesn’t seem comfortable with her sexy songs and it seems like the label forces her to make those songs rather than the creative tracks she makes.

Hate to say it but the industry needs to go back to gate keeping! Not letting any new artist in unless they have REAL talent, stage presence and music the people actually WANT to hear and buy and let's be honest there is NO VERSATILITY in music or artists now!
Nah I did too, and I think it’s because she can REALLY rap. Maybe not the greatest of all time or nun but the girl is solid, whereas we all know ice gives cutesy but mediocre bars most of the time.
Latto did the same as JT and I think it’s hilarious because people will drag one and they all got the same numbers, well jt did get 10k pure sales, but still
Doja did 72k in the first week but that being off season still despite the controversies and hate she got for being her self she still managed to get numbers
Honestly I am just hyped for Doechii's mixtape. Been listening to a few songs she dropped recently and I am bout' to get on those swamp sessions. She is the most versatile out here and her visuals slap. The industry now only wants to push "ratchet" dark skin women (no shade Sexxy) and not alt. Doechii will soon dominate female rap and I think she can bring a New wave with her while still working with other current female rappers. I really like Monaleo too I love Beating down your Block and Honestly I hope she runs the game too😊
I don’t care about sales. It’s annoying how much people care about them now. If the song is good I’m going to listen to it. I am also mad I don’t see Lola Brooke …and honestly when she was coming out I said Lola Brooke should’ve gotten the push that Ice Spice got.
There are only so many die hard rap fans which are divided into different fan bases. Meg had the best rollout filled with drama and controversy and a new look so she did the best. Also she dropped first. The other girls are all in the 25 to 35 bracket. I think too many persons dropped. Perhaps Cardi was smart to wait. She may drop in a dry season when people are looking for something to spend their money on.
ppl are also broke as hell right now. and can't afford to buy every single album that drops. esp in summer when it seems like a new album is released everyday.
They doing the same numbers because they are the same artist and they don't make music that inspires the masses to be better people, a sense of love, and God given talent is lacking heavy. Also, the lack of female support for high-level female lyricists leads to a bunch of mid level rhymers/twerkers, so these album sales are almost what fans of that type of thing asked for. Lastly, times are hard so its getting harder for the average american to relate to twerking, having rich sex all the time, spending hundreds of thousands of dollars and flexing on opps

At the end of the day; none of these women prioritize asking their fans to buy Cds and pure copies like other artists (like nicki who offered different covers and autographs) and so these albums are truly made to be streamed only bc that’s’more profitable. It takes. Millions* of streams to get 27K; most of you couldnt get 27 streams if you tried so try putting that into perspective. Its a different era and standard.

I find it funny that y'all care more about female rapper's numbers but y'all don't give two s**** about male rapper's numbers.. That's the problem that we're having.. We can't just enjoy female rap. We have to compare numbers and charts.. in the '90s that was never the case.
maybe its aslo because female rappers are more advertised than men these days. They have more followers and are the more trending than their male counterpart. And the way shear butter twitter holds them up there so people expect more sales.

Honestly outside of Olivia roderigo and Billie Eilish every artist who had debuted or had their breakthrough post-2020 have albums that underperformed or not do massive numbers and a lot of it’s attached to streaming dominating and becoming extremely oversatured in the consumption of music. Additionally, artists in hip hop and other niche/alternative based music genres like Latin urbano, afro beat, KPOP and alt-rock despite some of them being the biggest music genres in the world have to work extremely hard to crossover and achieve some success bc there’s biases to top 40 radio stations when their music is not infused with pop music, this is why I will never count or support Doja as a rapper or hip hop bc she is taglines as pop, meaning her music can easily be played on top 40 radio and become successful instantly her peers like cardi, Megan, ice spice and Latto have to do the extra mile to even have one song be played on top 40/rhymatic radio, even Nicki have to go the extra mile to get that special treatment despite being in the game for 20 years and dabbling in pop music. No hip hop/rap artist has the benefits from being a top 40 radio darling unless they are secretly pop stars disguises as hip hop/rap for marketing, the only other time it works is when racial politics comes in for white/non black/mixed with black artists.
I think people want something new. No shade to these ladies, but I want to hear something different. A lot of these songs talk about the same thing over and over. Shaking booty, having so much money, and their body. The market is over saturated with it. I genuinely do think they are talented and have a lot of potential
I think we need to accept the fact that music is becoming more disposable. That means the artist are becoming more disposable too. It’s gonna become normal where we see random acts create good music and disappear in the next breath.
I think the actual albums themseleves are part of why albums "aren't selling well" a lot of albums are getting longer that way an album gets more streams but that also means half of all these albums are just filler tracks that no one wants wich can make people not want to buy the album or viewing negatively, so ig shoutout to Ice for only having 10 tracks on the album
I know me personally, i listen to my vinyls more than streaming. But the female rap albums that have my replays is Megan’s, Latto, anycia, Flo Mili, and Nicki. I’m not replaying JT mixtape as much as i thought I would. Maybe it needs more time to grow on me. It’s good but I’m not listening to it that much
Well yeah that back to back ain’t working - got 6 girls sharing the same fan base (Nicki haters) so it’s hard for them to all do good when they all share the same “fans”
Rhapsody will always be one of the most under appreciated female rappers. She’s a lyricist who is signed to rock nation and some how gets no recognition still. It’s weird but hey, she’s getting to her bag still
i don't feel like sales matter at this very moment as it should be about replay value and the fact that almost everyone at this point know ice spice dropped an album but didn't buy it basically i look at it like if the world knows u dropped don't worry about sales cuz they know its there you should only worry when ur nicki or taylor big and ur sales are like 20k then its props a problem otherwise dont worry about it
I think this dip in sales is a correlation with the quality of music. The albums just aren't that good right now and it's ashame to see but I won't listen to albums and music I don't like. For example I didn't like Megan much, but I love Cobra so I only listen to that song off the album.
I don’t believe for a second that the industry as a whole is declining, people are just buying the music they ACTUALLY LIKE instead of feeding into a trend every time someone releases something. People are starting to have their own minds in terms of WHO is ACTUALLY TALENTED, WHOS MUSIC IS ACTUALLY WORTH LISTENING TO.
I looked up summer walkers first week album sells 100k+ first week and I still listen to both this day ! So I get it but anything is considered flopping today 🤦🏽♀️also a certain amount of streams = a sale it’s a different time of how sales are even calculated.
Personally i feel like numbers shouldn't matter as long as the music is good. Just because it's popular doesn't mean it's good ya know? i listen to music cuz of the quality, not quantity of sales. Plus first week sales are just that. First week. They'll increase over time and a lot of times it's because people are either busy or not being as supportive of an artist as they should be. Or they're "hate-listening" 😅
Tbh, I think we are tired of the musical sound and lyrical content. Also, I think people are turned off learning more about the evils of the music industry. Like how can we truly enjoy the music when our faves are being abused just to create it.
I was thinking about this the other day. The rap industry in general seems to be in decline. I usually stream but will try to buy an album if it’s really good (which is not often). There is talent out there but unfortunately they dont get pushed as much - like Doechii for example.
I think people confuse advertising and exposure as actual fans and supporters don’t let social media make you think the support is real it’s all talk no action
I think that the 20k is the new standard right now it seems as people aren’t really buying and more so streaming. I think people are having unrealistic expectations with some of these women! They ridicule them for doing 20k but you already knew their first week wouldn’t be huge. And then they compare it someone of a higher caliber who you know are going to have a much higher first week because of the built in fan base. I hope the women don’t let the numbers deter them and I don’t think it is. They just move on to the next single or album but maybe taking more time on their albums would help and some better cover art. Cause of all the albums this year JT is my fav and had the best cover art

Huge unpopular think piece but just hear me out. A artist who I think perfected both the raunchy bad bitch style but also kept it feminine with substance was Karol G. She is not an American rapper I understand but in reggaeton the artist are talking the same shit. She did a whole ARENA WORLD tour with her recent two album because she was able to have structure and substance with her art. It was more than the sex talk and showing ass, it had a story about heart break and also about healing. She also maybe consider pop as well which I agree. I bring her up because she is the only current artist I can think of who had major world wide success
