Many years ago (sometime in the 1990's), I was at the Mark & Brian's Annual Christmas Show when actress Dana Delany got to live out that fantasy. It really didn't come through on the radio broadcast of the show, but those of us in the audience saw how completely head over heals Dana was.

"The Partridge Family" was a great tv show. You should see if you can find some episodes, you would enjoy the nostalgia. The only actors in the series who actually sang were Shirley Jones and her stepson David Cassidy (who was a huge Teen Idol). The other voices were provided by studio singers. The instrument you are wondering about is the Harpsichord and it's sound is probably why you thought of the Addams Family theme. This song spent 3 weeks at number one on Billboards hot 100 and outperformed the Beatle's "Let it Be". I grew up watching this show and knew that Shirley Jones did a lot of Musicals most notably "The Music Man" as Marion the Librarian. David Cassidy was Shirley's stepson from her marriage to Jack Cassidy, another well known actor. He went on to have a successful solo career. It's a silly little show but some great music came out of it.

The Partridge Family was a TV series which ran from 1970-1974. The series was about a singing family consisting of five siblings and their mother. Few people know that the idea was based on a real life singing family named The Cowsills. The Cowsills consisted of six siblings and their mother who sang and unlike the Partridge Family, actually played their own instruments. They were quite popular then and appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show and many other variety shows of the late 1960's. The Cowsills turned down the offer to appear as the TV family which became The Partridge Family series because the producers wanted to replace the mother's part with a known actress/singer Shirley Jones. Shirley Jones played the mother while her real life stepson David Cassidy played her eldest son who sang lead vocals. As far as The Cowsills, they had a few big hits in the 1960's. " The Rain, the Park & Other Things" (1967) is probably my favorite. Close second for me would be "Hair" (1969) which was used in the rock musical "Hair" a story of a tribe of long haired hippies living a Bohemian lifestyle fighting against conscription into the Vietnam War. If you ever get a chance, check out the Cowsills life story. Very sad and tragic. There's a great clip of The Cowsills on The Ed Sullivan Show singing a medley of songs to introduce the family members. Check it out: "The Cowsills- A Cowsills Medley 1967"

It was a made for television family singing group patterned after the Cowsills. It may have been a fictitious band, but there are two major singers in the group, Shirley Jones, who was a famous singer/actress that appeared in many famous musical movies, and David Cassidy, her stepson, the teenage heartthrob at the time who had many hits on his own. Now you need to react to "The Rain, the Park, and Other Things" by the Cowsills.

Love this! The Partridge Family was, indeed, a TV show. It was about a widowed mother of five kids who all become a successful singing group. When the show premiered in 1970, the plan was to have the songs performed by studio musicians with some vocals by Shirley Jones, who played the mother and was a successful musical star. But then it was discovered that David Cassidy, who played the oldest son, Keith, could sing. So David joined the studio musicians (and sometimes Shirley) and recorded the songs as The Partridge Family. So when you're listening to Partridge Family songs, it's really David Cassidy and the studio group. For the series, the other actors pretended to play instruments and mouthed the songs as if they were singing. The show was very successful and David Cassidy went on to become the biggest teen heartthrob in history. And the show produced a lot of very successful songs. "I Think I Love You" was probably their biggest hit. And the instrument you were wondering about is a harpsichord.

OMG! David Cassidy was the awesomesauce back in the day! We were all in love with him! The Partridge Family was a tv family based upon an actual mom and kids group called the Cowsills who had several sizable hits, Indian Lake, The Rain, the Park and Other Things, and they did a great version of Hair, the title song from the musical. Good songs to give a listen to. I think that David Cassidy and Shirley Jones were the main two singers from the show on the Partridge Family albums, all the rest were studio musicians and session singers. Actress and singer Shirley Jones was actually David Cassidy’s real life stepmom from the time he was around 6 years old. They really became close when they did the show together. Shirley Jones is a brilliantly talented singer and actress, Broadway star, who was married to David’s father, the actor Jack Cassidy, wonderful actor. They had three sons together, Shaun, Patrick and Ryan. All three are actors, Shaun being the one with probably the most successful singing career. He was also quite the heartthrob in his day, too. You can still catch this show on Antenna TV, I think. It’s a fun show. The music is truly good, even though David Cassidy would much rather have done harder, darker music and became so at odds with his squeaky clean, boy-next-door character of Keith Partridge. He was always a rocker at heart. He was vastly underrated and under appreciated.

David Cassidy (lead singer) was the son, of actor Jack Cassidy who was married to Shirley Jones (actress/singer) who played the mother in the TV series. She is also the female voice you hear strongly backing on this track. David was one of the biggest teen heart throbs of the early 70s. Susan Dey who played Laurie Partridge (second eldest of 5 children), went on to play Grace Van Owens in the popular TV Drama LA Law. The Partridge Family was a TV show in the early 70s. The father has died and to make money the family forms a pop group. They ride around to concerts in a brightly painted school bus. The mother was played by Shirley Jones, an Oscar-winning actress who played the lead in several musical films like Oklahoma! and The Music Man. The lead singer was played by David Cassidy, who was Shirley Jones grandson; the other kids didn't really sing or play, session musicians did. Every episode would include a new song. I would hang my microphone from my cassette recorder so I could save the song. The family put together a band and perform in different places, all the while trying to live a family life, (no father in the picture). They did a few albums. Very popular in the early 70s. They even had bubblegum trading card, lunch boxes and the like. The very first musical group in was a fan of. Please play more. No bad songs by them ☺️

Amber is correct! The Partridge Family was a popular TV sitcom about a musical family, which aired from 1970-1974, and reruns were shown in syndication for many decades after the series ended. Academy award winning actress Shirley Jones signed on as the star of the show, playing mom Shirley Partridge. Her real-life step-son David Cassidy (actor/singer/songwriter/guitarist and brother of singer/actor Shawn Cassidy from The Hardy Boys), played her oldest son Keith. David sang lead on this one and went on to have a pretty successful music career. Sadly, he passed away in 2017. The Partridge Family was on TV right after the Brady Bunch on Friday nights, and some say it was the success of the Partridges that inspired the producer of the Bradys to have the Brady Kids form their own musical group on their show (and like the Partridges, they put out several albums as well). Shirley Partridge was a widow trying to support her five kids who had started their own band to try to help pay the bills. Shirley ends up helping make a demo tape of this song, and son Danny plays it for Reuben Kincaid who becomes their manager. Shirley buys an old school bus, the kids repaint it in a wild, multicolor stained glass pattern with a sign on the back that says "Nervous Mother Driving" and that becomes the band's transportation. That distinctive instrument you heard was a harpsichord which was a keyboard instrument much like a piano, but when the keys hit the strings inside, they produced more of a tinny, almost metallic sound. The instrument was used much more frequently in the 1700s. If you watch movies set in that time, you may hear the instrument in scenes where they are dancing to a minuet.

The harpsichord is a precursor of the piano (piano forté, meaning soft and loud), which fell out of favor because it had one volume. Rather than hammering the warp, as a piano does, it plucked it, like a harp. The Patridge Family began as a sitcom version of the Cowsills, a band of siblings & their mother. When the network cast Shirley Jones as their mom, the siblings balked - and walked. The show was quickly retooled as the Partridge Family and a cat was assembled. The character of Keith was, to the surprise of both of them, played by Shirley's stepson, David Cassidy. The show ran for several awesome, during which David became a full fledged, stadium packing, rockstar in real life. There was an incident at one of his shows in which the crowd surged and a girl was trampled and died. This, amidst his grueling tour/recording schedule and the show's production schedule was becoming too much. In He was offered the cover of Rolling Stone, to be shot by Annie Liebowitz. She suggested he do the shoot nude. He agreed. The photos became known as "Naked Lunchbox," with allusions to both his bubblegum pop/TV image, as well as William S Burroughs' book, Naked Lunch. When the issue hit the stands, the show was David so quickly that costar Danny Bonaduce only found out when he and his mother were barred entry to the studio lot, when he showed up for work. David Cassidy reinvented himself a number of times, winning an Emmy for a dramatic guest spot on a primetime procedural but, he never regained the mega stardom of the early 70s, in America. In Europe, he remained a solid pop star week into the eighties. Eventually he was on Broadway with 2 other former pop stars, Helen Reddy & his half-brother Shaun Cassidy. Unfortunately, dementia ran in his father, singer Jack Cassidy's family. He developed dementia and, shortly after going public, died. His daughter, Katie Cassidy, is an actor.

The lead singer is David Cassidy. He had a brother, Shaun Cassidy, who was also a singer. His top songs were probably That's Rock n' Roll, and Doo Doo Ron Ron.

I have all their albums on vinyl. Literally MY FAVORITE SHOW when I was 8, 9, 10.... We used to ply Partridge Family. I was always Laurie (of course). My middle sister had to be Danny. This is the soundtrack of gradeschool.

The Partridge Family is a TV show your girls will love. It was clean family humor. David Cassidy and Shirley Jones were the only musicians in the show. David would work on the show then go do recordings in evening and then tour on the weekend. Shirley Jones was actually his real life stepmother and had been in movie musicals. The Partridge Family was definitely on the lines of the Brady Bunch but with a widowed mother who ends up in her kids band and drives around in a psychedelic bus to different tours and of course home situations.

On the TV show Danny Bonaduce played Danny Partridge. One of the very few people on a TV comedy show that made me laugh out loud as a kid. I heard him on his own radio show about 20 years ago and he was still funny.
