Right after watching your reaction, I walked into the kitchen (where my husband was) and started chanting the "Uga chaka uga" part and my husband started singing the song!! We're 61 years old, so we were young teens when this came out. Great reaction, y'all!! :)

Originally performed by BJ Thomas. Hit # 5 on Billboards Hot 100 in 1969. Jonathan King did a reggae cover in 1971. Then Blue Swede (Swedish Band) covered it in 1974. Reaching #1 in the USA. And Quentin Tarantino included it in the soundtrack to his 1992 film Reservoir dogs. IN 1998 it was used in an episode of Ally McBeal. And in 2014 it was used for Guardians of the Galaxy.

If this hasn't been mentioned, the gand is actually Blue Swede, not Blue Suede. They are, in fact, from Sweden (just like ABBA!), and only existed as a band for three years (1973-75). They had two Top Ten Hits - this (which is actually a cover of a 1968 song by BJ Thomas), and "Never My Love".

Björn Skifs has sung so much great music (he hasn't written so much, but has had a lot written for him). Here is one of my favorites, light years from the classic 'Hooked...'. It's the the song 'Håll mitt hjärta', music by Peter Hallström, lyrics by BJÖRN SKIFS. In this video the Swedish lyrics runs in the upper part, and a translation to English at the bottom part of the pictures. A song with a similar vibe is 1970 hit "Knock Three Times" by Tony Orlando & Dawn. You have never reacted to Tony Orland & Dawn but they were huge in the early 70's having several huge #1 hits. I really like the vibe of Knock Three Times but their most famous song is "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round The Old Oak Tree" about a lover who has served their time in prison and is not sure if his lover wants to see him back. He'll know if he sees a yellow ribbon tied around an oak tree on the way home. Sappy but heart lifting and matches your theme of "Make Someone Smile". In "Knock Three Times" a guy has fallen in love with the girl who lives below him and wants to know if she feels the same. If she knocks 3 times on the ceiling it means she wants him, twice on the pipes means she isn't going to show. It has a great rhythm and was written to kind of get the feel of the song "Up On The Roof" another classic. Time to react to some Tony Orlando & Dawn.

Y'all should check out the funny Michael Knight (aka David Hasselhoff) music video for this song. 😂 While you're at it, there's also "True Survivor" & "Jump In My Car"

You beat me to it! The video is hilariously, horribly cheezy - but his singing isn't bad.

I'm 64 and hadn't heard this song for about four decades before I heard it at the beginning of "Guardians of the Galaxy." What a trip! Music that was almost always fun from the 1960s through to the 1980s. No click tracks, no auto-tune, no drum machines. Just music with people who could sing and play their instruments. Is it any wonder the Boomer generation refuses to listen to rap and hip hop? We grew up with real music and real musicians! 😎💘👌😉😂🎸🎸🎸

Another one from my playlist. This was a bit of a one hit wonder though as the group didn't last long. Also, they were Swedish. Suggest Go all the way, by the Raspberries. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-R5u25XGGo-E.html

A little correction/pronunciation help.... It's *Haka* dance of the Maori people of New Zealand, and *Swede* as in Sweden, not Suede. 🙂 There used to be a commercial with the beginning chant and the "Hooked on a feeling" part in it. I want to say it was for Scope mouthwash. 😄

Yes, so the song is a cover of an American song by the Swedish band Blue Swede... and the ooga-chugga, ooga-chugga part was made up by the singer Björn Skifs and the producer Bengt Palmers while they were on tour and couldn't play the instruments in the tour bus. The song got a new life from appearing in the US TV series Ally McBeal in the late 90's... when Ally thought she saw an animated baby dancing only wearing a nappy (which also became quite a sensation on the Internet)

A recommendation for female Friday, Susan Tedeschi singing "Hurts so Bad" live at Austin City Limits. link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kRfh1M-0X-k.html. This was released in 1968. It was recorded by the great country/pop crossover star B.J. Thomas. It was also done by a few others and then these guys recorded this cover in like 1974. Y'all should check out some of B.J.s songs., like Raindrops keep falling on my head or I can't help believing or Another somebody done somebody wrong song. These guys were only around from 73 to 75. They were a swedish band, and did several covers of songs.

I was working as a DJ at a small country radio station in Aitkin Mn when stopped in to see a DJ buddy in St Cloud at a top 40 station. We were sitting in his studio and he asked if I had heard this song and I still remember it spinning on the turntable as I heard it for the first time. Around 74 I am thinking.
