Like most other traditional folk songs, the majority of the renditions of this song are very simple & ‘ploddy’ but it has only been turned in to this more anthemic version by sohyang’s amazing skill at musical arrangements. You should look up this song by any other artist & see just how different it is. This song is thought to be about 600 years old it is the official unofficial anthem of Korea. It began as a wedding song and it is about a thing so deeply longed for. Arirang is a hill of unification. It has become the song for the unification of the two koreas. The ang sounds like ong or ung in English. Sohyang. Two syllables in one word. There you go, ha, ha! Nothing to it! Sohyang is the best female vocalist in the world right now and has been for at least ten years. No one can touch her absolutely beautiful and pitch perfect voice. You are partly correct in how her name is pronounced. You are correct with the name So, but slightly wrong with the other name. The letter H is softer as in the word hat and more emphasis on the y as in the word young. Then followed by a soft a "ah" then a short n sound. The "g" is not pronounced. The G is put there because of tongue position.

@@jhk722 In all fairness, Sohyang is one of those women who is a chameleon. If she changes her hairstyle of hair colour, she looks like a completely different person. Always extremely beautiful but completely different looking.

I recommend you listening to "Wildflower" by Park Hyo Shin! He is a Korean singer and is very technically talented. It's about his struggles and difficult living under a harsh company agent and also his closest friend committing suicide.
Her name is said like So HYUNG. Like saying young with the airy H next to the Y. The Y is not like an I, it is a Y sound. The A in the last part is pronounced like a U. So it’s said like SoHYUNG. Even though it is properly spelled as SoHyang. There is a video of her singing the US national anthem at an NBA game, and if you watch it, you will hear the announcer say her name exactly as she says her own name. This song is if the Korea as one country, then going through the war that broke them apart, then the hopes of both the North and S.Korea becoming one again. And the Arirang hill is a place they will meet. Arirang, those r’s, they are said like soft d’s. Listen to her sing it. It’s like adidang.
Been watching your Sohyang reactions. Thought it was time I said something about your pronunciation of her name since you might want to improve. :) Sohyang is 2 syllables not 3. 소 "so' 향 hyang. The H and Y blend together but do not make a 'hi' sound, it is more like 'hyang or hyoung. I hope that helps.
