We never heard of this song before, and considering it's an old Korean folk song, and there are over 700 versions of it, we weren't sure what to expect! But you gotta hear this arrangement from So Hyang, Korea's song bird. If you are feeling homesick, you might need a handkerchief!
BTW - There seems to be several ways to spell the English version of her name, which is one our last vid spelled it slightly differently than this one.
Original Vid!
• So Hyang - Arirang Alo...
Peace X Love
John X Lulu

Thank you for Wonderful reaction~💗💓😊 Yes~ This song is a famous “traditional folk song” that everyone knows, and Sohyang participated in arranging it.Her pretty dress is also the traditional "hanbok".The original song was "Arirang" and then the now deceased singer adapted it to "Arirang Alone" and sang it. This program reconstructs famous songs by singers. It is a song that includes the pain of aggression and war from a long time ago, the sadness of division into North and South Korea, and complex elements.I also became a fan of Sohyang's this song and it's my favorite song. All of Sohyang's beautiful performances are impressive~♡Have a Wonderful Day~♡

Arirang the most popular folk song in Korea, but there are many different variations from different parts of Korea. Arirang Alone is one of those versions, and as the folk songs usually are, easy to sing along yet bring strong emotions to the Koreans who sing and hear it. Sohyang's rendition turned a folk song into a magical experience.

Arirang is the most well known Korean folk song. It’s believed to be first sang over 600 years ago, and passed down from generation to generation. It embodies the spirit of the people of Korea for centuries. Arirang represents the suffering and tribulation (Arirang 'Hill') overcome as people and the nation. If we’re together as one holding hands, we can make it over the hill. Arirang Alone is a modern adaptation of the original song written in the hope of reunification of Koreas. It’s a song of hope and peace. It tells a fantasy of the Island of Dokdo floating in the East Sea all alone singing Arirang. If Dokdo sang Arirang, alone in the Eat Sea, would North and South reunite? Dokdo is in the central location from Mount Baekdu (in northern border of North Korea) and Mount Halla (in Jeju Island, South Korea). Let’s ride a boat together from Baekdu and Halla. When we dock our boats at Dokdo, we’ll witness a new dawn together. The songwriter’s parents had to leave two sons and a daughter in North Korea during the war. His father’s dying wish to him was “when Korea reunite, go find your older brothers and sister and tell them that their parents did not abandoned them”.

So Hyang won several rounds of this Competition, but did not win this round some say cause it was Arirang Alone Show round (they have different nights of different genre) Everyone loved her Modernized version...But because of the changes/arrangement a Totally Traditional singer won it. SoHyang has always struggled with her health during her lifetime with those many illnesses.. uterine cancer, hepatitis, chronic pneumonia, etc.. The night she sung You Raise Me Up ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-te_L9ofhUt8.html She just got out of Hospital and was advised Not to sing...So she did that....lol It's really a miracle this one of the most skilled vocalist of all time could be in such poor condition. And definitely she is much more than great technician and has Perfect Control of Her Gift...and Her singing is so special.

I love to see when people listen Kim So Hyang sing their expressions on their faces says it all, this was as always an awesome reaction guys. This song is one of my favorite of the many styles of Arirang songs that are out there. That song is a South Korean national treasure and is seen as a national anthem as well, its a song of hope that one day the country will unite and become as one. Anyway, the show is Immortal songs 2 and it's been around since 2011 and that show has shown so many wonderful South Korean singers and I fell in love with the show and I try not to miss any of the episodes. I just found that show about three years or more I really don't recall but that is when I first saw Kim So Hyang was on that show, I became a huge fan of so many singers, like Cho Yung-jin aka ALi, Park Kiyoung, Son Seung Yeon, Hyolyn, Song So Hee, the new Boohwal band, Kim Teo, and so many more all so wonderful and very talented singers and musicians. Here is a song that reflects this song that you just reacted to its a beautiful and very sad song and it can bring you to tears, it's called "Does anyone know this person" sung by one of my all-time favorite singer(ALi) here is a link to the song ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kAcZ2tgYWTA.html one other thing about ALi she is known as the Queen or Madam of Immortal songs as she is the one holds the record in wins and the highest score of the show. unless someone has already beat her wins like the cheater Jung Dongha who can only win if he calls all of his fan base to be there to vote for him, which is very wrong.

A testament to a great performance is if the vocalist can deliver the message of the song in all that he/she can in order for audience to interpret it and yield an emotional connectivity. A traditional folk song I am sure the original melody is but she brought it into such a modern interoperation of it and yet it still kept its core message and heart in the middle. I love it. Music is such a universal human experience.

The comment about this being magical is spot on. Sohyang's performance of Arirang Alone transports you to a different time and place to sense the emotion of Koreans in hope of unification through the ages of war and suffering. She turned the traditional, melodically simple song into an epic saga with her arrangement, not to mention fusing it with western elements to modernize its feel. (see this for the traditional take of the same song here if curious: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kPtTi8ougPU.html ) One thing about Sohyang is that she sings to communicate rather than entertain. That's why her performances always carry a lot of emotional punch. On any given day, we are amazed from listening to Sohyang. On a lucky day, our soul is touched and heart moved by her voice. You've listened a couple of gems from her but there are more. You sound fairly secular from your comments. Perhaps you would listen to her stunning rendition of Whitney Houston's I Have Nothing at ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--G388dTAGOo.html

John: YES. She DID create her own version to this song, so much so that it's virtually unrecognizable from the original (except for the part when she has everyone sing along). A purist might say she butchered it. Once you learn the original, it's super easy to play - just use the black keys on the piano (pentatonic scale) and you'll get it in seconds.

No. The history of Arirang is much older. The representative kind of traditional Korean folk song is called Arirang. Arirang has over 500 songs. It's a song that's been going on for hundreds of years. Although the lyrics vary from region to region. The common lyrics are "Song of Korean Sorrow," which contains Korean feelings of regret and sadness.

You are so wrong. She doesn't chase wealth. That is so offensive. Please know more before you make such a comment. She sings mainly in churches and charities for free. She does alot of missionary work and she also "preaches (some call witnessing)" in between her songs (usually 4 to 5). She rejected all big agencies from US and Korea that chased after her signature including that of the late Michael Jackson. Her manager is her father-in-law. For your information, she isn't rich. By the way, you guys are wonderful. Very charismatic. Easily one of the most fun couple who reacts to songs. KBS is ok but not MBC. MBC gives strikes. KBS usually block and if you dispute it, there is a good chance they will unblock. Sohyang is multi talented. She is an author of science/fantasy fiction and she has published several books. She is also a cartoonist. PS: Yes. She rearranged the cover songs and make it incredibly beautiful and super hard to sing. Pls react to Sohyang in King of Mask Singer i.e. Dear Love, Breathe, Mona Lisa, Home or Hug Me.

not sure where you are getting your information from, but she has not monetized her talent the way you are thinking. She has still never signed a record deal. this song is very sentimental to us koreans. it was a song to unite and bring hope for all koreans (north and south) against the terrible things the Japanese did to them while they were under Japan’s rule. Japan even tried to erase Korean language and burned books and did mass killings just for fun. this song was a beckon of hope for all and a reminder of how Korea overcame the hardships dealt on by Japan

I believe that in order to get a better idea of what this song is about, it is necessary to listen to the versions that are probably closer to the probable original. I think the North Korean version - except for the last stanza that has apparently been added to promote propagandistic aims - is truer to the original. Based on my own independent study of Korean language and history its vocabulary is largely based on Hebrew, Akkadian, and Geez, a language that has a similar relationship to Tigrinya (a northern Ethiopian language) as Latin does to Italian. All of these languages are classified as Hamito-Semitic or Afro-Asiatic languages, although it seems many Koreans probably don't have enough respect for Africa to consider the evidence that would support the belief Korean is one of these Hamito-Semitic languages. Recently, there has been some research to show that Korean has many similarities to "Sumerian" which is closely linked to Akkadian. I believe this song is probably much much older than the 600+ years that has been mentioned, and its author has apparently inserted Hebrew words in a coded way to remind Koreans of their spiritual roots. If you look at a translation of the North Korean version, it becomes more obvious. It seems that this Korean folk song has concatenated many Hebraic words in order to preserve a Messianic message for future generations. I believe the original lyrics of the chorus were Ariel, Ariel, Ari, Ariel - or alternatively Avraham, Avraham, Ari Ariel. Ari means "lion" in Hebrew, and Ariel is the ancient name for Tsiyyon ("Zion"), which is the holy mountain in the Bible, and one that is important in Biblical prophecy. The fact that Ariel, which apparently later morphed to "Arirang", was originally intended as the destination appears likely, because some versions use the preposition meaning "to" rather than "over" after the phrase "Arirang hill" (Korean 아리람 고개로), so this would mean that Arirang hill is not just an obstacle to overcome on the way, but rather the final destination. The allusions to rest appear to be references to the sabbaths that must be observed on the way there, since it is several thousand miles from Korea to the holy mountain. In the version sung in North Korea, there is a reference to a few Biblical narratives. One phrase says 10 "ri" (which would be equivalent to about 4 km, since almost 400 meters is equivalent to one "ri" - but in Korean, "ri" also refers to an administrative district such as a village) would not be reached before there would be a disabling foot ailment. (Apparently 1 "ri" is equivalent to 700-1000 paces, depending on whether one is carrying a load or whether one is an adult or child.) This is apparently very rich in symbolism of various kinds. I believe there are a few important Biblical themes being symbolised here. First is the prophecy found in Genesis 3 that the seed of the woman would crush the serpent's head while the latter bites the former's heel. Most Biblical scholars acknowledge that this is a prophecy about the Messiah (who as offspring conceived within a virgin is her seed) and most Christians believe the reference to the serpent's biting the Messiah's heel is a reference to the crucifixion. If one reads Matthew 10, where Yeshua commissions his 12 apostles to evangelise the 10 houses of Israel, who at this point were scattered around the world, it becomes clear why this song is saying that not all 10 districts would be reached before the foot injury occurs. A secondary referent of the symbolism seems to be Baal-Peor, which is represented by the Korean word "Baal-byeong"; although "byeong" means ailment or disease, I believe it came to mean this as it was borrowed from this name of a place where there was an altar set up for Baal; and in fact, the people who were sexually seduced into into idolatrous worship of Baal at Peor were struck with plagues. It was also the fact that Israel never managed to rid herself of Baal worship that became the reason YHVH allowed her to be conquered by her enemies and thereby scattered among the nations. The word "shibri" actually is the masculine form of the number "seven" in Hebrew; so the fact that a Hebrew word like that appears in a Korean folk song in such a context seems significant. Also the word "radah" means "enlarge" or expand, so the combination of "ri" and "do" appearing in juxtaposed fashion appears significant as well. The next concatenated Hebrew words seem to be the Hebrew word "chomot", which means "wall"; "mot", which means "established" (in Ge'ez, "mot" means "death", probably because sacrifice was a way of establishing or ratifying covenants); "azab", which means to "restore" or "repair"; and "aseh", which means "make" or "do". In essence, the song seems to suggest that the Messiah was ordained to die as a propitiatory death for the sins of the children of Israel before reaching the 10 lost houses of Israel (and Yeshua died after 4000 thousand years of human history (of which 6000 is ordained before the return of the Messiah, based on James Ussher's analysis); and a double meaning is that before 7000 thousand years are reached, we will be restored and be able to worship again at Tsiyyon. Interestingly, there if you read the conclusion of Kant's famous work "Critique of Practical Reason", it makes reference to the same glorious promise that this Korean song makes reference to. According to Kant: "Two things fill the mind with ever new and increasing wonder [Bewunderung] and reverence, the more often and more steadily one reflects on them: the starry heavens above me and the moral law within me. I do not need to search for them and merely conjecture them as though they were veiled in obscurity or in the transcendent region beyond my horizon; I see them before me and connect them immediately with the consciousness of my existence” (Critique of Practical Reason, 5: 161)." According to the versions of Arirang that were probably earliest, "As the heavens are replete with many stars, in my heart are many dreams". I believe both are referring to the promise made to Abraham: "“By Myself I have sworn, declares the LORD, because you have done this thing and have not withheld your son, your only son, indeed I will greatly bless you, and I will greatly multiply your seed as the stars of the heavens and as the sand, which is on the seashore; and your seed shall possess the gate of their enemies. And in your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.” (Genesis 22:16-18).

Young or old there are no koreans who do not know this song lol. its more like an unofficial national anthem. The current anthem of korea has been on the spotlight for quite some controversy after its been known that the song was written by a japanese composer during the colonial period, which is the most painful memory within the korean history, and this fact alone shows that there are still remains of the bloodshed, marks left by the enemy who still feel no remorse for their crimes and this angered the korean people. Arirang on the other hand has been a folk song thats been known to be around for approximately 600 years. "Arirang Alone" is a modern remake of the particular folk song written in hopes for the reunification of the North and the South. It was written by a man whose parents lived a life in remorse grieving in loss of their children, two sons and a daughter, who they were forced to leave behind the North during the war. He says that his father's last words before he died was "if the north and the south unites once again, go find your siblings, tell them that their parents never abandoned them". Basically Arirang contains all the "HAN"(sorrow, greivance, suffering) of the people of korea within its LONG LONG history and never ending anguish (you will know what i mean if you have some korean history background). Which is why the song is very hopeful at the same time quite sorrowful. Many emotions blended into this single song.
