So I designed this thing… Open Air ITX Case, RTX 4090

I designed an open air ITX case from scratch. It's an ITX case that can support large GPUs such as the RTX 4090 Strix from ASUS allowing a massive power house gaming system in a simple air-cooled build. The PC case is made to be ambidextrous or flexible to use in different orientations and left or right-sided desk setups.

As a big fan (pun intended) of Open Air Cooling systems I love seeing projects like this. Couple of quick thoughts. 1) Make the motherboard cutout for the ITX model bigger to allow easy access to the back NVME slot without the need to remove the motherboard. 2) Maybe look at doing an MATX variant. Should keep the size down and would work better with an ITX option than the ATX variant. As for the flip option, which is cool. I noted in the video you talked about having the GPU and CPU facing the user. I personally prefer them facing away as that lowers the noise perceived. Hope to see this available for sale soon, would love to play with this.

Very good points. Thank you for taking the time to write all of that. So far the feedback has been very constructive and positive and it's helping me in the final stages of refining it. Once people started telling me their thoughts from this video, I was quickly able to make a decision on how the case should ultimately be. Stay tuned!

mate that is such a slick looking system. you should be really chuffed with it. I'd love to see a mATX version (as I'm yet to find a mATX OAC) with dual rad support (yes I know it breaks the air-cooling vibe)
@haurjie
@haurjie Год назад
Thank you! So mATX is in a weird spot (unpopular), they just don't sell well on the market. However, I am going to be making watercooled versions of the ATX though. With that in mind, mATX motherboards also just fit well on ATX trays too, because they are bigger than ITX enough where it doesn't look quite as empty in a case haha, especially if the ATX case is made to be very compact like what I have here. I purposefully made them with a target size to be smaller than most mid-tower cases on the market.

Very cool! I love the concept! I prefer air cooled over water cooled, so this is exciting. I hate RGB (except I need backlit keys), so I'm glad to see that removed. I like your little custom H logo. I think it's only fair that you show the final build connected to a keyboard, mouse and monitor(s) running Windows (the preferred OS for gaming) with all cables attached (even if it's just video and power and everything else is wireless, although I prefer all wired kvm, ethernet, game controller, speakers/headset, webcam, VR headset, etc. - I hate recharging batteries, lol). I'd also like to know your monitor sizes that you show in order to visually compare your final PC(s) to the various screen sizes. The reason I lean towards these small builds is for portability. I need to take my PC to LAN parties and events. Please show how this PC would be torn down, actually carried (demonstrate that please) and reset up. Maybe tell us the final weight. I don't favor a particular orientation, except my mobo ports should be easily accessible for quick tear down and re-building. THANK YOU! BEST OF LUCK!

@navinnaido3203
@navinnaido3203 Год назад
Great job dude, but I feel like the itx side of things need more planning. Itx main advantage is size but if the case itself is hinging towards atx realm. It is probably best to ditch having different mounting style for itx layout if the case is still close to atx layout or purpose built a itx version of the case which is way smaller with less flexibility which is still fine cause open air case offers great cooling performance.
@haurjie
@haurjie Год назад
I want to make the ITX case size smaller. The only solution I can think of is to make it not support big GPUs like the Strix 4090. But come to think of it, I think that's actually fine. Because most people who would buy or have an ITX case are probably not going to want anything larger than a 3080 anyways... (physically). So very possible I can just cut all that down.

I don't have any left, but if there is enough interest I will do another run of group buy. I will say that for the foreseeable future, I am putting my case productions on pause due to other life priorities. There is also a chance that when I do make these batches again, there may be either a new version or a new design completely.

Any support for a AIO?
@haurjie
@haurjie Год назад
No, air cooling focused only. Also, my experience as of lately has made me sway away from AIOs in general, I don't recommend those anymore. Either go air-cooling or full custom actual water cooling. Reason: when AIOs have pump issues, you can't open it and fix those. I've had a few fail in less than a year with client builds. You have to replace the entire AIO unit. Aircoolers don't have that problem obviously, very simple low maintenance. Custom water cooling, if your pump or any particular part malfunctions, you can replace just that one unit.

All your components will get dusty and might fail earlier plus somebody might spill something on that thing. I never got why people build a case like that. Back in the 2000´s my cases were alsways open to the side, and I had to clean that shit all the time, no thanks. I just got a black box now with all my components safe in there behind some meshed filters and all quiet down, what more to ask.
@haurjie
@haurjie Год назад
Closed cases get just as dusty as open air cases. The only difference is closed cases you have to take more time to clean it. Open air cases is much easier to clean, take it outside and take compressed air to it and that's it. Closed case you have to take off all the panels, filters, clean those, clean the inside corners and crevices of your PC, get through all the cable management etc, takes longer. I've had both open and closed. Closed is more hassle, I hate it (personal opinion and style). Closed cases also have vent holes on their panels, you can spill water and it will go right through that and into your system anyways. You spill anything on a PC whether it's closed or open, it will go through period. Open air cases is not for everyone. I tell people it depends on your lifestyle. Example, if you have certain pets that like to run around and stick their paws in things, then get a closed case. There's also a balance of function and aesthetics, some people like the way open looks and some prefer closed for various reasons. But I appreciate you sharing your thoughts!
@sierraecho884
@sierraecho884 Год назад
@@haurjie Really ? because they have significantly better filters. Can you explain why they get just as dusty ? Do you mean just later on ? Because otherwise I don´t see why that should be the "case", pun intended xD Cleaning with compression air. You can clean both types of cases just as well with that. I would be careful though not to damage any components. And yes you have to take off all the panels and filters in a closed case, that´s what they are there for. That is their function. Have you ever seen say a car without filters ? Or a vacuum cleaner etc. ? Now why would all those technical devices have filters installed instead of just being open if they get just as dirty and are more difficult to clean ? You may prefer an open case design, and that´s fine however it is simply not the case that they get just as dirty. They are also significantly quiter and cheaper for instance. But that´s not the point here because an open design may be more aesthetically pleasing and so on. Closed cases are not water proof for sure, but they still have some protection depending on where you spill, for sure more so than any open design by default. An iPhone does not work underwater, but you can use it in rain. So while not perfectly sealed, again it helps. In my opinion design should follow function but then again I am a mechanical design engineer.
@haurjie
@haurjie Год назад
@@sierraecho884 I know the arguments for why people like closed cases. Also there's several factors to consider as well. I would even say simply saying "open vs closed" cases generally speaking isn't quite sufficient. Because really we would have to take case by case comparisons. Most if not all open air cases are more similar, but that can't be said the same about closed cases. Closed cases have a lot more variation when it comes to "significantly better filters", not all filters and ventilations are built equally. The discussion would be a very long essay here if we really wanted to nail it all down. Also, we can't really compare a car or vacuum or cell phone that use filters to PC systems, they aren't used the same way. Application is totally different. But I know why you used these analogies for your argument and thought process. Let's take one example from my personal experience. The Yuel Beast Monument or Atlas II case is full open air, in 4 months it would accumulate the same amount of dust that my LianLi O11D that's got all its panels on would in 6 months. And I would dust/clean the same frequency on both systems. I always clean every 6 months. But then how does an open air like the Atlas II compare in dust accumulation compare to the Corsair 4000D? The NZXT H5? The Phanteks Evolv Shift? The Cooler Master NR200? etc etc... they all have different filters. But also what lifestyle do you have? How many pets? Are you a naturally clumsy person who walks around with a glass of water and often bumps into your PC and spills on it? In my entire life of 34 years, having been around PCs and building a ton of PCs, I have never spilt any liquid on my computer. So these "what if scenarios" are valid to imagine, yes it can happen, but how likely? There's a lot to factor in. It would be a very long conversation if you really wanted to break this down. But I will tell you that open vs closed is really dependent on your lifestyle, and open air cases is not as "vulnerable" as most people think. Even given its nature and design. That's great you're a mechanical engineer, I'm a material science engineer with a focus on mechanical engineering (at least from school). But workwise I'm an artist (both digital and performing). So when it comes to design, I have to incorporate both function and form. Not just because I have to, but because I want to. But obviously, form is subjective.
@sierraecho884
@sierraecho884 Год назад
@@haurjie Sure it would be a cases to cases comparioson however open cases have no filters whatsoever and close ones do however good or bed you can already put things into categories. Categories will never be 100% accurate because they by definition simplify things. I used car, vacuums and so on because those things use similar designs for similar purposes. As I said previously, those two categories are very simplified. We can break it down a little more if you wish but the best open case in a sense of dust accumulation will not even beat a mid term closed case, that´s the whole point of the system. I do get a case which is basically a box safely harbouring my equipment to have it somewhat safe from moisture, dust, dog hair, small spills, somewhat sound dampaning and so on. No open structute can provide any of that. If your lifestyle is the reason why not have open case TV open case car structures and so on ? Because it does not matter how great you are of NOT being clumbdy it can still happen maybe not to you maybe you got lucky and so on. We are comparing general designs with consumer grade products, I am sure there are people who never have to use a seatbelt...I think you get my point. Oh and BTW with millions of computers and people yes it is very likely. It maybe won´t happening to you but somebody, hence the design choice. In the end you can choose however you want and you can reason your choice however you want but physics won´t change. An open structure is more suseptible to the things I have already mentioned. Some closed structures do their job better than others sure and we can rank those but an open structure ? It will always be inferior in those terms. You might want prefer an open case because of it´s aestetics but there is no argument about function.
