Ants Canada actually made a terrarium for his Dubia colony a while back, since he wanted to make sure his roaches were even better for his ant colonies than normal Dubia roaches are.

The reasons your crickets are dying is probably stress. Once one dies, they release a pheromone (idk if that’s the right word) telling all the others to die as well.

Another downside of crickets is that they can be absolutely brutal. Back when I used to have a lizard (rest in peace, Mitch), we were warned that crickets are cannibals, and sometimes, they'll even kill and eat your lizard. Years later, when I had a huge entomology phase and was studying insects like nuts, I realized that it checked out. There are crickets out there (larger species, mind you) capable of killing a tarantula single-handedly. So yeah, roaches are probably a safer bet for your pets all around, both in terms of parasites and keeping them from getting murdered.

Actually fun fact, chief, those beetles are cleaner beetles, they usually come accidentally shipped from the provider and eat the frass and deceased of the crickets.

I got a special kind of... silent crickets at my store. They're less stinky, less sickly and less noisy. But still worth a rage when they escape. That's actually the only thing I looooaaathe about crickets!!! They're the houdinis of the insect world! Months after you thought you fed the last cricket, some other will miracolously show up on your carpet like it lives there! And you'll never know when and how tf this cricket ever escaped!!

The real worst thing about crickets (most of the things you listed are avoidable with proper care) is they can potentially hurt your pets. This is why it isn't advisable to just raise crickets in whatever tank your pet is in, they will pull an uno reverse card and try to eat your pet. There are horror stories of tarantulas having all their legs eaten off by crickets and even lizards losing the tips of their tails or toes to crickets and bear in mind these are same kind of cricket that you normally buy from the store not some sort of ferocious "dire cricket" or something. Make sure to maintain a proper feeding schedule so that your pet is definitely hungry and on the hunt when you put crickets in and remove any crickets that go uneaten after a set amount of time.

2:30 those are dirmistead beetles (I don’t know how to spell it) they eat cricket poop and reduce bacterial content in cricket enclosures keep them around, you can also use them in roach enclosures. Also to keep your crickets alive longer, feed them fruit like watermelon, don’t feed them citrus fruits because that makes them poisonous. Edit: also get banded crickets, quieter, not nearly as smelly, and are super hardy. Also you can get 500 of them for like 25 -35 bucks

I know one feeder insect worse than crickets: fruit flies. I’ve had numerous baby mantis and they’re all too small to eat anything else until like their 4th moult! (Pretty much all of my ones were flower mantises so aren’t even that big as adults) so I had to keep getting fruit flies, which suck! They’re tiny, they’re fast, they’re tiny and the can hide just about anywhere!!

When I had a freshwater aquarium I would own african dwarf frogs. Petsmart was awful about upkeeping their health until someone bought them. I had ended up with countless frogs with health issues from them sadly.

No wonder why I'm having such a hard time buying dubias. In the two years I've been keeping and buying I've never once had a problem getting them. Now i had to search like a little weasel.

Those beetles clean up after the crickets and help keep the container clean. Or at least that’s the idea.

*deep sigh* You’re making me wanna try Dubas for my Leo gecko, he’s on worms rn cause I’ve been waiting for it to warm up so I can get crickets to put in a tank outside on the porch. But… I think he’d probably appreciate the roaches more. Even tho I hate them, but watching gecko eat them be cathartic 💀💧

They put those small roaches with the crickets, and dubias to clean the container. They're actually pretty helpful, you should have them for your colony. Cleaner beetles are a saint.

I blame dubia roaches for my current invert addiction. Im currently at about 10k dubias, ~600 isopods(6-7 species), about 30 grasshoppers and few other random things.

Seriously though, crickets suck ass. I really appreciate how dubia roaches are tough and stay alive with little maintenance. The switch to roaches from crickets saved me so much money!

The beetles are actually dermestid beetles. Cricket breeders use them to eat the dead crickets.

One fun cockroach would be the Madagascar Hissing cockroach. They are usually kept as pets and are quite the hefty size.

The black beetles in the cricket containers are most likely dermestid beetles. They are often used when keeping and breeding a variety of feeder insects, and act as little janitors in a sense. They do infect evolve from larva, however they are excellent cleaner insects. Even the larve are beneficial to the roach bin. I use dermestid beetles in my dubia colony to clean up old food, the roaches fraz, and even dead roaches. that's not to say that petsore crickets aren't nasty as all heck though. www.rainbowmealworms.net/dermestid-beetle-larvae/

so I actually used to have a farm of dubias. They reminded me of the tragic ending of my once hopefully happy cockroaches one day, to smelly ugly carcasses of my babies inside their favorite cave... Then I got a beardie lizard, Rockie-Pockie! And I fed them...DUBIAS. I thought they were cute, but they genuinely gave me nightmares. From breeding too much to breaking out of their SEALED TIGHT lid. But actually, the nightmares don't actually have to do much with the fear. THEY ARE CREEPY in my opinion. from my experience, they are fast, get large very quickly, and are just a wannabe cute cockroach that I once had and loved, and did I mention that the smell they had attracted FLIES AND MOSQUITOES?. luckily it didn't last very long and the smell and flies and other nastiness quickly disappeared.

Dubya roaches are the best roaches. Giant Madagascar hissing cockroaches are the second best. Which is weird, because the WORST kind are the giant freaking “Palmetto bugs” that just waltz right in when you open the door and then hide under the fridge. Living in the south is greaaaaaaat.

I know this is probably way too late to be posting a comment on this video but uh- here’s a possible reason to why these crickets may be dying. It’s very possible these crickets are dying to the amount put so close together in a tight space. Crickets need space- they aren’t a very social animal and sticking so many crickets into one small box is a death sentence. They will either kill each other or die of their stress. Though I do agree that crickets are pretty stupid lol- But there is usually a bigger reason to why so many are dying. Hopefully if you see this somehow it helps.

I'm not saying this is always the case, but I have found some dermestid beetles with crickets before, which would have been meant as a clean up crew for the cricket breeding situation, rather than them being a parasite.

The thing with feeder insects, (I have meal worms and crickets) is that you have to get them from a reliable place, I can get like 30 crickets for 1.50, at a place called exotic pets. If you get them from a place like pets art or petco, those companies onLucy care for the money. Not the well being of your pet.

Mine too. Always whe i'm trying to keep crickets, most of them died, and probably bc they've got eaten by another crickets. Why? Bc the died crickets ALWAYS deformed. They ALWAYS have one or two missing body parts (mostly legs)

so i actually did some research recently and those beetles that you saw in the cricket containers are skin beetles and theyre a clean up crew they eat the corpses of the dead crickets. I also kinda found one of the larvae a few weeks ago in a cricket box and now i have a new pet

Not telling you what to do but have you considered putting in some isopods and springtails to eat the roach poop and prevent any future mold problems?
