So I Tried Squarespace. Here's How it Went.

If you’ve been anywhere on the internet. You know you have to type something in the address bar to get where you want to. But we also all know that each website looks completely different from one another and each one can serve completely different purposes. I’ll be building a squarespace website from scratch then I’m going to give you my thoughts and experiences on Squarespace and then we’re going to decide whether it’s worth using or not. Let’s get started with a little review.
Amazon Affiliate Links to Gear I use:
Sony A7S III: amzn.to/3jD0fxC
Vanguard Alta Pro 263AB Tripod: amzn.to/2O7V8Yn
13in Macbook Pro non-touchbar: amzn.to/2F4uz27
Philips Hue Light Strip: amzn.to/2VZq2EV
Godox SL-60W: amzn.to/37LsdT0
Rode VideoMic NTG: amzn.to/2RKHVrL
The Websites I Built:
Squarespace: www.jimmytries.world
Wix: jimmy15147.wixsite.com/website
WordPress: jimmytriesworld.wordpress.com
"Which one looked the best?" Poll: www.jimmytries.world/website-...
0:00 Intro
1:40 What Is Squarespace
2:40 Starting The Make a Website
5:39 Pricing and Some Less Known Details
8:40 Personal Experience
9:29 Squarespace Alternatives: Wix and Wordpress
13:16 Conclusion
Basically to have a website on the internet you need 3 things. A domain name. That’s what you type in the address bar to get to your website, then you need the website itself. Then you need a webhost, which is basically, the place in charge of sharing your website with the world. Now, Squarespace is a site that lets you purchase a domain name, create a website using their templates, use Squarespace as your web host, and integrate an online store onto your Squarespace site.
Squarespace asks you all these questions about what you’re trying to accomplish with your site such as the topic and your goals for the website. From there Squarespace has a bunch of templates laid out that you can interact with and preview to get an idea of the general vibe that you want to go for. Once you select a template, you’ll need to sign up with Squarespace to start customizing that template. During this, they give you a 15 day free trial without needing to provide them any credit card information. From there you’re able to customize the template however you want. You can add new web pages up top, have your logo displayed on the site, link your social media accounts for easy access, and replace, add and delete images, text and sections for web pages. You can select the page you want to edit, then, within each page are different “sections” which are just different parts of that page that display different information or serve different purposes. You can then click on what you want to edit, and you’re provided with all the available options that you can change for that particular field. So, for text fields you can edit text and add links, for images you can replace the image or remove them all together. And if a section isn’t meeting your needs you can delete that section or add a new one. When you add a new one, you can choose between a bunch of different templates to meet your needs.
Squarespace has 4 different subscription tiers. Personal, Business, Commerce Basic and Commerce Advanced. Each one increases in price from $144 a year to $480 a year. However, I want to point some things out about the business and personal plan. If you read the fine print, Squarespace provides you a free business email, on the business plan, and a free domain name under the business and personal plan. These items are only free if you buy the annual plan and only for the first year. Which means, after your first year, if you stick with squarespace you’ll be paying more money on these plans. My suggestion would be to transfer a domain you purchased from Google domains into Squarespace, get that extra year of rights to that domain, then when that’s about to expire, move it back to Google Domains and renew it or just get it from Google Domains and you’ll be saving money in the long term.
So, now that I’ve paid for Squarespace and have my website up and running. How was the entire experience? I think Squarespace makes it really easy to start setting up a website. The site was intuitive and the learning curve wasn’t too steep. Their templates all looked really good, and it was really hard to decide what specific template I wanted for my own site because I really liked a lot of them. So basically to describe SquareSpace in a sentence. It’s easy to use, and it looks pretty.
Should you use Squarespace? I think it all depends on what your goal is. If you’re promoting yourself, want something professional looking fast? That’s when I’d start looking at Squarespace. It definitely has the best looking templates by far.

Yes!! My client's really love Squarespace. I'll help them customize the site, give them a quick tutorial and they are able to manage it on their own. When I used WordPress, my clients would get frustrated and often need to come back to me for "updates" and help managing it. I know this is a fancy word, but SEO is great on Squarespace as well when you know how to implement it.

I used Wix for a final project in school a couple of years ago, and it truly was super easy, even for a 16 year old. I built it in a couple of days (working on it only 2 hours a day). It was very intuitive and didn't feel any different to making a powerpoint.

Agreed. I used Wix several years ago to build a professional web site. It was a pleasure to use and what I also liked was it was super easy to make pages inaccessible or bring them back on line when I wanted to. I have another project coming up and I will most certainly be using Wix again .... it's just so easy for us users. It even has it's own SEO wizard built in ... it's a no brainer !

As a Web Developer someone recently asked me to add some stuff to their Wix website. Sure, it's simple and easy to use, but it turns out I really don't like Wix at all and will probably never use it again. It only allows you to do very basic things and quickly reaches its limit as soon as you try something different.
@beardedricotheold2640
@beardedricotheold2640 Год назад
@@agentmikster44 I hear you on that one. Same goes for things like DNN with themes with built in "Squarespace" like edititors... 90% of the time I just want to edit the HTML as it would have been much faster than trying to get it to work with the built in editor. Granted I think if all you want is a really basic thing then it's good enough.

Excellent content Jimmy, I just subscribed. I took the poll and agree with the poll results. Squarespace has design perfected, wix as well as weebly aren’t even in the same class. Wordpress wouldn’t even load lol. But considering there are 1.5 billion websites on the internet the sad truth is your site is likely to never get viewed let alone significantly noticed. I’m not being a downer here, I had a successful site with excellent page ranking but find that’s rarely the case with many folks who can pay a lot of money to be unnoticed and disappointed. So Wordpress with its $45.00 a year personal plan is about what a site is worth in my humble opinion; a cheap hobby. Thanks for the great advice looking forward to more.

Tried using WordPress for several years, I always failed miserably and would outsource the work. 2015 got introduced to Wix and never looked back. We have built several businesses and operated them all via Wix and the website and UI are amazing. The last 2 websites I built on my own. Everyone in our circles didn't believe that we spent something less than 29$ on it! We handle 5000 transactions on that site monthly, it's seamless, beautiful and professional! It's better than some of the companies who spent 5-10k $ on their platforms. I mostly update my wix default images via creatives, pics and videos from CANVA pro. Wix & Canva have transformed our brand building capabilities. ✌

squarespace's whole USP is their "award winning templates" but i couldn't find a single template that i liked!!! it only showed me 1 page of templates, and at the bottom there was a link to their old templates. i found a lot of the templates looked the same, they seemed to be recycled with different fonts and colour schemes. i'm setting up a website for a family member and found this gorgeous wix theme called adalene. it looks so sophisticated, elegant and perfect for the vibe they're going for. i also LOVE that you can add video on the homepage for free, and how you can really customise the look you're going for. we've been using wordpress for a couple years and it's honestly horrible. the themes are ugly, the editing functions are non-intuitive. you want to resize something but it messes up the whole page. a lot of time is spent fiddling on correcting small details. i'm heavily leaning towards wix since a lot of reviews show that they have step by step instructions to guide you through making the website. a lot of reviews also say that apparently wix's seo is better than squarespace's. i really hope that's true. there are add ons like photo galleries that look quite useful. if i can't find hard evidence that wix's seo is actually worse than it claims, then we'll build our new website on there.

I see many comments about word press which I think was good some years ago but is getting a little outdated as well as the fact that some plugins are not compatible with other and causes your site to break. You can spend hours on word press to delete the plugin that is causing the problem when you could be designing a site, this is where the others come into play.

Thanks for this video….I did watch it after investing myself in creating one on square space. I felt a bit overwhelmed with WIX and frankly, just found SS much more aesthetically pleasing. I am an artist and coach/consultant, so beauty was a deciding factor for me in presenting my studio online. It was my first time making a website (super late to the game). The work is cumbersome…yet, another factor with SS is that the template forces one to think more clearly and methodically about one's business. So its not just a data input process - but a creative process when building one. This I appreciated very much. Thank you for your video…at this point feels like I made the right choice…we'll find out more later...

It was built many years ago and had not been updated since 2012, except for announcements of our annual meetings. A question I have is: using the webhosts that are mentioned in this video, can one "transfer" content from one webhost platform to one these platforms (Wix, Squarespace or Wordpress) to take advantage of features offered or pricing ? Is it possible to archive old content from one platform to these webhosts? Are these webhosts satisfactorily secure if one wanted to keep separate content for members only and not for general viewing? Thank you for your reply.

Hello Ted, yeah it's possible to transfer information and content from some of these webhosts to another. In some other cases it's not possible. It depends on each platform and webhost. Also it's definitely possible to create some sort of members areas using these platforms where people can have access to a certain information only after they meet a certain requirement If you need more explanation then kindly state it

I have not tried Squarespace or Wix yet, But WordPress is a complete environment and with plugins and features available for almost every need. There are paid and free themes available across the internet for WordPress and elementor builder for WordPress is awesome. I have experience doing web designs for startups and ecommerce stores and I can tell you that WordPress although looks overwhelming, has more features and customization options any other tool in the market. Basically I am deciding on the platform to choose for my next website project and WordPress still seems the best.

i agree with much you say about square space. Their ecommerce shop page is very crude and not modifable. The collections block on the shop page is annoying if you want more than a grid. You can't do addons in the shop collections block section.

I work for a company that sells Wix websites and I’ve always wondered what the DIY experience is like vs what I sell. This was a great video. I won’t get into the comparison of the different websites here as I am biased.

Do you mean you work for a company that sells the templates to Wix, or your company pays you to do the dragging and dropping on the Wix websites? The second option sounds like an awesome job!

@@BenjaminEmm probably works for an agency that either (re)sales or they whitelable it & then resale it! One of the two or your last option!

@@judichristopher4604 Squarespace for sure. It’s cheaper, more reliable, amazing templates and I can edit my website from my phone.

Jimmy!!! You have no idea how helpful this video is. I even feel like watching it twice. I only have one question, do any of these three platforms have bilingual sites? It seems wix offers bilingual domains, but I don't know about wordpress and squarespace...

I don't think squarespace has that facility, wordpress has a multi lingual plugin and obviously the easier site builders for this are Site123 and Webador.
