I think one thing that kinda annoyed is the lack of street exploration. now you are probably thinking "why would you want to walk the streets in a game about parkour" because their is no sense of verticality when the streets below are essentially just spikes from Sonic painted up all pretty. It also makes clambering up a skyscraper all that more exciting.
Regan Huitema I agree entirely. I was really hoping for a ground level or street area bigger than Charter Hill. It would have humbled you on the ground and made you feel like a god on the rooftops when you see the difference.
That would be cool but it will be a long time until the experience is actually valuable and rewarding. Waiting until the technology catches up for it to be done right. For her to explore the streets I'd think you should be able to scale and go inside every building or else it's just kind of a waste. But games are nowhere near that right now
The linear sections are one thing. But I think adding more street sections to the open world may have risked it getting too large. Faith isn't Peter Parker. There is only so much space they can render for your character to traverse quickly. Your character would lose their advantage to KSec on a flat plane.
@Regan Huitema the other thing is because you are restricted to roof tops, it meant you took the same route over and over. i'd suggest you play dying light, i feel it did an open world first person parkour game better than this because you truly do get a sense of freedom and mobility in both the slums and the more built up town presented in the game.
I played this game for sooo many hours, just running around the City, trying to perfect my traversal skills in the city... I also liked replaying missions to find faster ways through them. Ill also say that the entire city felt incredibly cold. It was pretty, yes, but there was not a single place that to me looked like a human would enjoy living in it. Maybe thats the point.
I think it's the point. To make the city look so artificial it paints that dystopian feeling over it. Everything looks shiny and elegant but it lacks the real life and real human emotions to rise against that artificial way of life. The lack of trees also helps to create this. If you have found that one easter egg at Benefactor mission where you climb the Anansi tower, the text says "the last tree in the city :(" and a bamboo tree next to it, it really made me realize how the lack of GREEN trees affects the aritificial look significantly. I also love just finding out of bounds areas, doing missions with faster routes and without messing up my momentum, or even replaying the game. Cutsecenes are very beautiful in this game if yall remember this was made with the infamous Frostbite engine that killed Mass Effect Andromeda and its character models completely. DICE really knows how to utilize visually the Frostbite engine.
"Dont pay more than 15$" I bought it on sale for 5$. It was a very good deal considering I didn't spend more than 15$ for both games. I don't regret it I genuinely enjoyed both games and even with it's big flaws I was sad when Catalyst wasn't getting a sequel and I don't think it ever will. Not under EA at least.
So, replace the current barebones melee combat system with an assassination system? Maybe make direct combat almost impossible, so that the challenge is squarely focused on discovering routes to infiltrate a location and take the enemy by surprise from an unexpected angle? I could 100% get on board with that.
@@ImperialGoldfish Dude, that would be sick. It would be really hard to pull off though. And I doubt that investors would want to take that risk nowadays. Most big companies that have the resources to pull something like this off are playing it safe with sequels.
What about replacing the counter attacks in dishonored with the acrobatic finishers faith performs in this game (only in first person and with a sword) for example, one of them would be Corvo, Emily, or Daud rolling over a guard, ripping their sword out of their hand and slashing the guards head with it. Maybe decapitating him/her
My biggest problem with Mirror's Edge: Catalyst was in my opinion DICE's decision to put a large population on the rooftops of the city. What made me love the original was this "You vs The City" feeling it gave out. I felt alone and traversing the edge of towers was what made my personal experience with the game great. Like Journey I only met a few allies/foes along my linear path only to quickly be placed in desolation. I miss those moments.
ha, a fellow journey player. totally agree on you on this one. being alone was what made this game unique to me, and i've never really realised it until you put word on it. thanks ^^
There aren't even that many people on the rooftops lol. Most of them are runners. They did that to make the game feel not so empty and make the city look alive
@@andrei.cr2 Sorry if I didn't make myself clear. I meant a large population compared to Mirror's Edge 1. ME1 was a way more personal experience compared to Catalyst. And while The City of Glass "looks" alive in ME:C it sure didn't feel like it. I honestly believe DICE took away from the original and added something completely different which seems to have backfired on them. And in the process might have put the series on hold.
I utterly ADORED Mirrors Edge. I've had it on all consoles and PC and thought it was an absolute Masterpiece. Catalyst, was ambitious, but detracted away from what Made Mirrors Edge great. Whilst still a fantastic game, I much prefer the original. The art styling in this game was magnificent. I was pleasently surprised with Catalyst.
Is it now customary for RU-vid creators to promise something on April 1st and then give us something completely different that we also wanted? Back in my day, creator pranks involved promising something and then giving us nothing. Did enough people complain?
Im guessing what the OP meant was that Raycevick thoroughly played and did research on the game and came to his conclusion through said facts and his experience with Mirror's Edge and with the medium of video games as a whole. Very few times does he give an opinion on the game; one example being when he said he would recommend buying the game for $15 dollars at most. But overall, his assessment is mostly unbiased and on point.
Catalyst isn't a bad game, it just became so much more than the original's vision and the creators struggled to live up to that. Also, open worlds harm far more games than they help, example being here. I'm sick of companies chasing "open world" as if it's the pinnacle of video games, it isn't and often times they sacrifice focus and mission design for large, vapid spaces devoid of substantially anything. Awful trend and I can't wait for it to go away. For every Witcher 3, there's 5 ME: Catalyst's. Bigger is rarely better in video games.
Why do people keep pointing out to Witcher like it's a good Open World. Most of your time is spent walking and it's not fun. People should be pointing out games like Sunset Overdrive where it's fun jumping around from Point A to Point B.
I would literally kill for a Mirror's Edge 2 that learns from both 1 and catalyst to finally make a real, engaging story to match its excellent gameplay.
Good idea. Maybe you should be the script author. Its not that hard right? Edit: But that "WE CANT STOP THE REFLECTION" after "I found a way to stop the reflection. For good".
They had Terry motherfucking Pratchett’s daughter write the first one, and didn’t even bother to let her know they were making Catalyst. It’s why I’m always going to be pretty cold towards it; and the post-apocalyptic setting too, since that wasn’t really necessary.
I wanna see him do Katamari Damacy. I want an in depth, gritty character analysis of the King Of All Cosmos and the moral implications of rolling an entire city into a ball to mask one's mistakes.
Yeah, same here!! When I saw the title and the 12 min run time I laughed out loud. Committing to doing a deep-dive on E.T. was hilarious, a throwaway gag is less funny. Less work, but less funny.
Teletran Gamer Yeah, I had it figured for a joke already, but I would love to see an actual video on it. The game that killed and industry- it's something worth study.
Agreed especially the first one being bug-ridden and problematic. But you can't argue that CDPR raised the bar for RPGs with the Witcher 3. The amount of passion and hard work they poured into it, resulted in nailing everything right except the combat that I could understand why most people hated (myself I enjoyed a lot tho).
Chicken Foot Gaming It's not that it did movement better than Mirror's Edge, it's just that collecting stuff is much more fun and less intrusive there.
Good video. Although, I didn't have much issue with the open world (much prefer to the linear style of the original), upgrades (easily attainable and geared towards new players), or collectibles (not essential, skippable, fun to collect imo, and I see no issue with stopping for 2-3 seconds), but that scene where Faith breaks down is absolutely horrible. Totally disconnected me from Faith and seemed extremely contrary to her own character. Like seriously? You infiltrate a secret underground mind control facility, get out alive, then just give up? When you have a way to win? You explained it perfectly. Overall, I loved the game and thought it was a good improvement from the last game. Wish it could've done better.
I have always felt that Dying Light mechanically succeeded where Mirror's Edge failed. It isn't perfect, but it interlaced narrative and gameplay in a much stronger manner, and felt much more deliberate than Mirror's Edge did before it. Thoughts?
intrusted I haven’t given Dying Light a try, but I wouldn’t think of it to be a game that would be relaxing, Mirrors Edge is calming to look at with its bright poppy white and yellow/blue/red color pallets and simplistic ambient music. What ways is Dying Light relaxing?
I actually ordered the game recently and i love it. Its a very interesting story along with the whole parkour traveling is different in a good way. The music is so futuristic & the characters is alright. I haven't beat it yet but im enjoying the game so.much I 'm in no rush to beat the game.
@@curbyour____9506 The whole point of Mirror's Edge is that visuals are supposed to be simplistic and not overly detailed. ME:C tries to make itself feel like a detailed world in a place where Faith is supposed to run past everything. What made Mirror's Edge good is that it made everything look amazing when you ran through it, but not when you stopped.
I preordered this. :( I paid $65 for this. I like the game but it didn't live up to my expectations. Feels unfinished. But I'm still playing it to this day
KingLulzington you said how I feel perfectly. ME1 is in my top 5 favorite games of last gen so I was very hyped for this game and pre ordered it. I like it still but i felt disappointed once I finished it.
I finished this game a about a month ago and i think its one of the most beautiful game ever made , i couldn't play it i was just staring on the view and what a beautiful view and city they made with realistic detail especially with hyper setting on 1080p , the view and the beautiful sound brought tears to my eyes i mean laterally may be because of nostalgia of the first beautiful game since 8 years . there are very few games can reach the expectation and almost all new games have flaw but still this game was one of the most beautiful game ever made .
I loved the first game and I'm so glad they continued the series, but my biggest gripe with Catalyst is the locations. The first one had rooftops, construction sites, a storm drain, parking garages, a boat, a training area for your enemies, and first-person cutscenes as well as 2D animated ones. Catalyst has... rooftops... more rooftops... rooftops of a rich neighborhood, one construction site... one building with an engaging interior... that's it. And mediocre 3rd person CG cutscenes that every game has. I'm glad it exists but it ripped out everything that made the first one great.
Mirrors Edge Catalyst has the be the most beautiful visually pleasing game I have ever played, shame that the story couldn't match the quality of the visuals.
i loooooove this game, it's so beautiful and i love how you feel like you are Faith when she's running. Everything you said is true though, i dont even know if i bothered upgrading everything in the skill tree like i usually would.
Perfect description, that was pretty much exactly how I felt while playing. Especially the "snapping point". Only that the time trials didn't interest me at all ^^
why are your videos so good? I've actually never watched a video of yours that felt like it was made just to add content to the channel. All your videos seem like they take a lot of time to make. the writing of the script, the editing, and just the cleanness of your videos are all well done. So thank you.
Is there anyway you could review Stars Wars Republic Commando? I LOVE that game and I don't understand why there was never a sequel or why other games fail at the squad mechanic so badly? Btw good work and I love your videos!
I agree with a most of what you're saying, but Faith hugging her sister in the first Mirror's Edge is in fact a very strong moment for the player, since s/he's with her from a first-person perspective. Those two scenes created a huge emotional impact for me and thus one of the strongest connections I ever felt to a video game character. Game and story rarely came together as strongly as in those moments - an achievement I feel has been widely overlooked. Not just looking at another character, but instead touching* her/him is a tool used far too rarely in games. * And I'm not talking about handing or receiving resources/rewards/rocket launchers. :)
ME1 is fantastic and I still play it. MEC isn't as good. I get certain vibes and feelings walking around in ME1 that I've never had in any other game, even MEC. It's not even the story of ME1, but the tone, environment, and sounds with music.
Are you like, so lonely that you feel an emotional connection when a female video game character hugs your character in first person? I didn't give one shit about Faith's sister hugging her, since we only saw her like once or twice. I think you need help man
Mirrors Edge is one of the series that always had the potential to be in the hall of fame of all time gaming. The background story combined with its visuals could have made a turly amazing and unique experience in gaming. Of course additionally with its first person parcour mechanics. For me personally the story was improved in Catalyst over the first game but was so hard to follow because of so much exposition being cramped into it. With a focus on either Faith Sister or the Big Evil Corporation it would have gotten the focus necessary to engage with the Narrative. Both together made an ending that effectively did not impact either the characters or the world. All of them are where they were before. Both Games in the Series failed to show the world of Mirrors Edge in an interesting engaging way. In both games you never meet npcs other than plot characters or enemies. It is a similar mistake Fallout 76 made with taking away all the npcs. I really want to see an entry in the series that shifts the focus of the game on its first person mechanics and the story/world, while ignoring flashy extra tick boxes like having an open world and such.
I don’t know bro, because the backstory for the first game ("coming to a future near you!") feels disconnected to the backstory for the second game ("after the apocalypse and we rebuilt everything…").
Man this game just gives your this chill vibe that no other game can give, from the bright nights and its neon colour scheme to the smooth cloudy sunrays in the morning time period, this games play on colour makes for a nostalgic feel, I remember faintly playing the original version of this game as a kid being frustrated by the fact that how brutally hard the game was for me (Keep in mind I was still very young and inexperienced), now with the changes that the game has made in the course or 8 years I believe this game is a masterpiece for its time thus i will be very disappointed if there wasn't a 3rd instalment to this franchise
Amazing game! Very Smooth and Flowy Parkour unlike Dying Light which has 95% less moves and animations, and feels as stiff as an cardboard, Bought MEC on both PC and PS4 and no regrets! If it only had Multiplayer! just imagine exploring the amazing open world with your buddies as the sun is setting!
As someone who loves Mirror's Edge, I feel like most people have been a little harsh against it. You however did an amazing job at analyzing it, hitting on both its weak and strong points. Great job, you've earned yourself yet another subscriber!
Disagree. I always notice the better the game is the more criticism it gets. Mirror's edge 2 didn't disappoint. Taking in consideration the amount of. Freedom it gives you.
Last year I played Catalyst again and I knew the story wasn't the big deal, but man, I feel in love with the art direction, every new zone I unlocked was more beautiful than the last, and the music perfectly accompained every moment, but it's true that the game lacks a lot important points that could have made it a greater experience, very interesting video
The concept is so amazing... first-person, parkour and a little semi-stealth, beautiful visuals.... but the gameplay, level design and missions are real boring. Imagine if they made a FAR CRY combined with these parkour skills.
You had me at wall punching rage. My wife thought I was having a seizure when I began to fall off those microvators 14 times. Too bad as it has Matrix moments and beautiful trance score and physics
amazing review, you got every point of this game. I enjoyed a lot the visual impact of this game, sometimes i just went around to admire the city, it also has a beautiful realistic lighting (if you live in a windy city the sky and sun light would be really similar at the game), but story and character are just forgettable...
I hate how people say “you don’t play mirrors edge for its story”. that’s complete bs in my opinion. Catalyst had the opportunity to have a well written and executed story that would’ve surpassed ME1, but they ended up dropping the ball on this one. I’m sorry but as beautiful and atmospheric this game is(which it really is) it isn’t enough for me keep me coming back and revisiting this game from time to time. I’ll still keep the game for my personal collection, but I will not replay that story again or collect all the worthless items in the map.
Summed up my thoughts exactly! The gridnodes were so much fun to traverse I always got super excited to play one...and realised I hadnt been doing the same with the rest of the missions.
You do not seem to get it. Thank you for putting your opinion out there, though. It only emphasizes how special this game is. May it not discourage potential players to dive into this brillant universe. The OST, the architecture, the lightning, the atmosphere, the controls, the skills: It is ALL superb and so very unique.
I'm studying hard rn, will be complicated to do and I'm so sorry. Re-reading my comment leaves me thinking I could've wrote it better in order not to sound like so much of a prick. ME:C is one of those games that will grow precious for some, and will simply be unfun for others. Give it a try if you can, you'll know in the first two hours if it is for you. Also, playing with Nvidia Ansel was really great to get some phenomenal screenshots
This is actually one of the most creative games i have ever played. in my 30 years of gaming, ive never played a game with such a world... and this soundtrack. it wasnt the best game ever, but the world was something beautiful. cant really explain it!
Very thorough analysis! One thing that always bothered me about ME was the fact that this game was built as a 3d platformer (linear, speed based) but sold as a freeform exploration. The strongest aspect of gameplay in this game for me is achieving perfection in a known route, since exploration loses it's draw once it's done once.
Limbo; that's actually a funny story. The collector's edition was 200 dollars, but I got it through pre-order on Amazon for 160. Before that, though, I thought I wasn't going to get the collector's edition and only pre-ordered the standard edition for 40. Well, changed my mind, cancelled the standard edition, got the collector's, then a week after the game released I got the standard and nothing else. I was like "wtf, mate?" and found out that amazon never actually cancelled my standard. After I beat the game, the collector's edition arrived (I live in alaska if you're wondering why delivery took so long) and I never bothered to return the unopened standard edition that came with the collector's (they give you a wrapped standard along with an empty steel case). In all, I spent 200 dollars and have three cases for Mirror's Edge Catalyst; one is an empty standard, one has the disc in the steel book, and the other is a wrapped standard that I want to give to someone who really loves Mirror's Edge, lives nearby, and owns an Xbone. I might be buying the game again, too, just so I can have it on the ps4.
Oh wow :D Yeah I've heard these kinds of pre-order editions can take quite a while to arrive, which makes getting them a bit annoying when you likely can't play on the release day. I bought the game just recently, got it for 15€ on pc :)
Have you read the prequel comics that this game mentions? What's your opinion? My only issue with this game is how DICE wanted to explain the story so badly! They've learned their mistakes from the first game, but then for this one again, they haven't perfected it yet. The ending especially was too rushed for me.
This is one of the best games in this Gen to me. It was totally underrated, nobody understood, that the open world concept really suited the game and worked for vanishing the menu stuff. It surpassed the first Mirrors Edge, made things better and played even better thanks to 60 fps
The skill tree was stupid, the collectibles were even more stupid but otherwise Catalyst was fucking brilliant fun to play and completely superior to the original Mirror's Edge. The gameplay, setting, and story all improved immensely as did its technology. Rebooting the story was also a pointless thing to do but the game itself is one of the best of last year. Don't give a fuck what any hater has to say. I had an absolute blast playing it and continue to do so everytime I play it. The gameplay itself is too much fun to not rate this game extremely high. Games should not be judged by their minor flaws when the base of the experience is so good and in catalyst it is. First person parkour has never been better and it was always insanely fun to begin with.
I actually like this game, the parkour is extremely addictive to me, especially because regular consoles is running it at a solid smooth 60 fps, I've got almost 200 hours played on xbox one, it's almost relaxing just running through the city (at daytime)
This is why I hate April fools. I was looking for ET my favorite game ever. So fun, immersing and the graphic majesty that only a 2600 game can provide. And here you didn't show it to a new generation! What will the youth do!
The first time I heard this was going to be an open-world game, my interest immediately plummeted. The most enjoyable part of the original Mirror's Edge, to me, were the well-designed "race tracks" with minor detours or shortcuts here and there for you to run through. The better you got, the quicker you were and the more of these detours and shortcuts you could take without stopping. That is something that I couldn't see happening in an open-world game because things like that only work that well when they have one well-defined entry and one exit. I don't understand why they felt the need to turn this into an open-world game filled with pointless "side-quests" (or, as it seems in this case, just collectibles). But, I guess, all the people whining about the original being too short got what they wanted...
But it still has that! It has an open world and all the story missions are linear and more well crafted than the original plus the mechanics make the original unplayable
The superfluous inclusion of a skill tree was easily my biggest issue with this game. Not only does it conflict with Faith’s backstory of being a veteran runner, but it sticks a middle finger to the level design and the player. The fact that moves as simple as quickturn and rolling (which the first game taught you off the bat,) are locked behind a skill tree is nothing short of infuriating. It’s artificial progression at its worst and serves no purpose other than to inconvenience the player.
I don't think so. I love ME:Catalyst even more than the first game. I waited over 4 years for this game and at its release i also did not like it. But after coming back to it in December I first realized how amazing it actually is!
Why So Deadass? I never played the original but to me this game is very creative and it would of been perfect if the ending had Kruger fighting you or if there was DLC to play as other characters and use cool weapons
It's good for you guys that you enjoy the game so much, it's not a bad game, it's just not that good a game to me, the first Mirror's Edge blew me away, so I was so hyped for this especially after I waited so long, but then it's made and has the lackluster storyline, the terrible characters, I really think they should have just continued off the original storyline, not that the original one was all that good, but it was definitely better than this one, the combat and side missions were horrible, I didn't enjoy the open world that much, but then again I think that may be because I've been fatigue by all the open world games there have been in recent years, but they improved the freerunning greatly though which I really did enjoy, I had more fun running around the city than doing actual missions, I'm not sure whether that was a bad thing or not, anyway this is the second time in a row EA and DICE has disappointed me after a waited so long for a game series to come back after Battlefront, Battlefield 1 wasn't all that great either.
Why So Deadass? Mirror's edge Catalyst hasn't been updated in a while either and there's still no DLC I wonder if Dice does not care about the game anymore or because it's a low budget game
Bro, shut up. This whole "1,000 pieces of secret junk spread across the map" thing is ruining games. It's there to drag out an empty game with a short story. ME: Catalyst does it right. You don't need any of it. It's there so that you can go back and have stuff to do after you finish the game. It's not THE GAME like all other games do to turn a 4 hour game into a 40 hour game.
such a shame, dice might not revive this one... the story was better in 1 imo but the gameplay was better in catalyst (except for pathing..). I wished dice would have focused on the "runner" aspect instead implementing combat, the enemy runners were a great idea for this kind of gameplay. i honestly didn't really like the fact that you could attack (with or without weapons), so i would always try to either disarm or run past as best i could. in my eyes, faith has not only just fought for her and her loved ones but for what's right and that's why I loved her character so much and look back at the first game with such nostalgia.
The game is beautiful in terms of visuals and the setting. This is why Catalyst is one of my favorite games, it's because I wanted a game where I could just relax and run around the city in a beautiful atmosphere with futuristic music in the background. I do agree when it comes to story, exploration, gameplay and etc, it lacks depth in all of these 3 elements. It's EA that's what you get from them. If Catalyst was developed by a company like Rockstar, Bethesda or CDPR, the game would've been a massive success. I still love the game simply because of the visuals, atmosphere and the setting. But, I do admit i'm disappointed because it lacked a lot of elements that could've been implemented in it. That was an honest and an unbiased review, nice work!
