If I understood right, he literally is high. He straight up can't stop laughing in Gear Fifth.

it's different from all the other shonen powerups. that's what makes it as good as it is. it's about happiness. nothing about being edgy and angry/vengeful. It's just freedom and happiness. Also, his laugh is so diabolical it's crazy!

The animation of the Gear 5 itself was phenomenal. My only problem was that they put Hiyori's moment in the middle and it killed the tension. But overall, I loved it.

there is a reason for it, the way I like to put it is luffys high on freedom and said freedom makes him 100% care free. its like how a normal human might feel after achieving a goal BUT X 100

D Roger found the Laugh Tale Island, that the fruit came back, because now, someone desired to be JoyBoy or knows the existence of the fruit, Sun God Nika. Only weakness of Gear Fifth I noticed in this fight was that sometimes Luffy's way too busy laughing to see an attack coming. He took quite a few unnecessary hits to the face because of that.

And the voice actress is like 68 years old...

More unfortunately I don't think the animators got the memo, the sound design is fine at all, but it's way too finely animated to feel as fun as it should. I wish it was more cartoony and (ironically) rubbery and instead it feels too fluid.

Even the scenes of the music waves turning into words UGH the animation was just so perfect

agreed, questionable directing decisions ruined what could be the greatest one piece episode of all time. but what i'm getting from this is that this episode wasn't meant to be the main show, this episode is just to get us hyped and the real thing is happening next ep (1072) i hope i'm right

they're just following whats in the manga, plus its more like an introduction to the transformation than rather getting straight into the fight. next episode is gonna be heat for sure.

@@dontmove1085 everybody feels this way, but some people don't wanna talk about it because they don't want to seem ungrateful or look like they disregard the entire episode because of its flaws, which is definitely not the case, all gear 5 scenes were some of the best animation in one piece and in anime in general, no one is denying that.

The action was a little to fast imo. If they lingered on a few frames it would have been easier to take in.

go watch Old tom and Jerry. the technical skills for animation present there, are not here. anime is the lowest level of animation aside being pretty amd some studios like trigger that push animation boundaries, this looks....pretty bad. i HOPE they get their best lead animator on the next episode, which they probably will.

@@ThePlatinumVault yeah, but it still felt a little disappointing. But it’s just a personal thing, and not at all based on objectivity. I had certain expectation that the animation director was not going for, and that’s okay. It’s not a flaw, but it is something I didn’t personally prefer.

A fight can be serious and wacky at the same time. Luffy has always been goofy in fights while still keeping the fights as a whole serious. MANGA SPOILERS Even in the rest of the Kaido and Luffy fight there are still moments that show that Luffy's serious side can still shine through even in Gear 5. The biggest example is the small exchange of words Luffy and Kaido have when Luffy is dealing the final blow
