Digimon Survive is now OUT! After the longest-feeling 4 year wait in history. But now we all have the ability to play Digimon Survive... is it ACTUALLY worth buying? I'm going to cover the good and the bad of Digimon Survive and then tell you my conclusion on whether it's actually worth buying with NO spoilers beyond Chapter 1

After playing through the "true" ending on my second try I can thoroughly say this is one of my top digimon experiences. Main reason: the characters. Digimon, to me, was always a character driven series and I think Survive shows off some of the best in the franchise. All of the characters (even though insufferable at times) have realistic problems and I got the best feeling when I saw them grow and change as a result of bonding with their partner digimon and each other. I also LOVE how these personal aspects mess with the battle system. It's a not so subtle way of showing the repercussions of social interactions and helps to push the player to bring the group together. It felt like a nice modern take on the original '99 Adventure story and I couldn't have asked for more. Only problem is I think it deserved a full anime to tell its story.

I also really enjoyed It. Haven't beat the game yet but I've loved everyone moment. Going the more serious dark route really made the game great too. Definitely one of my favorites if not my favorite. If I'm just talking about things they could improve on tho I'd say they should have focused on the battles more. Yes it's a visual novel but the game would have been even better if they fleshed it out. Imo the choice to go with 2d for the fights instead of 3d models kinda hurt the game visually. The battle system could be refined a bit too but that goes without saying. Another thing is the Digimon to me seemed a bit one dimensional in dialog. I get mainly it's about the humans but I think the partners contributed not much to conversation. The only one that I throughly enjoyed was kaitos partner because even tho Bland in comparison with the humans he had more personality than most of the Digimon. Overall the game still was beyond what I expected since hearing it was a visual novel was skeptical.

As someone who bought switch edition I didn’t notice a lot of the issues… but also with it being a visual novel, I’m not as concerned with how it runs. Yeah some of the translations are not great but that happens a lot. The originally Megaman battle network series has AWFUL translations. But it’s fine to me haha

Oh we want bad translations you are correct since MegaMan Battle Network 4 was the greatest example of that. 4 is the peak of bad translations.

Digimon is pretty much synonymous with bad localizations/translations. The english and japanese versions of the anime are practically completely different shows. The dub has a habit of censoring stuff to appease soccer moms that stopped caring when the 90s ended and sometimes just changes things for no apparent reason aside from some unhinged translator going on a trip. Survives big issue is it wasnt translated and instead the dialogue is completely rewritten and reworded to the point where the spoken dialogue and subtitles have nothing in common except sharing the same general context and meaning. The anime gets a pass for that by inserting fun dad jokes and celebrity voice impersonations but that would completely butcher survives plot so they didnt do that. To make a hypothetical example, something like "shuuji! Stop being mean to lopmon" gets turned into "dont be a dlck man". Its a small gripe because its basically the same meaning but as someone with a terrible grasp on bad japanese it irks me a bit and takes away from the story to hear one thing spoken aloud and read another. My japanese is awful so i still need to read the subtitles a lot to fill in blanks so its a constant annoyance and distraction from the plot that always has me bringing up the menu after the voice actors shut up to reread the last few lines of subbed dialogue. At least theres no overtly western political stuff or wierd personal beliefs inserted into the translation. I know most of us need a break from that crap these days. Times are tough. I dont want to be reminded of my riding electric bill, the elections, have some idealogy or religion pushed at me etc etc while trying to unwind. Times are tough right now. I need to escape to the another place and hang with my boy agumon sometimes without 2022 america busting in to ruin my fun. Luckily i can get that here.

Maybe a hot take, but I think Digimon Survive has the best story in Digimon anything. Perhaps even holding the top 3 spots considering the differences between the games endings stating form your choice in chapter 8. It’s like a Digimon greatest hits and for everything I can anticipate there is something that took me totally off guard. I’m loving it, it’s like I’m playing thru an anime season except people die…

no, it's great. it's derivative of adventure, but it's very much an attempt to reboot adventure with purposeful and planned out writing and does a good job at it. i might still prefer Tamers and Adventure overall and i can't say whether i'd like every ending at this point, but the moral ending was pretty good - though i disliked how the course of which ending (and final evolution) you get just gets dictated by one choice.

Being a visual novel I'd hope the game is one of the best stories for the Digimon brand. While I do agree I really do like the story. I like the darker elements in the story that have been introduced. I like the focus on lesser used digimon. Honestly it has story elements that should be carried through to different digimon storylines in games where applicable.

A really cool quality of life feature in ng + is that the skip feature will auto turn itself off of it hits new dialogue you haven't seen before which is so cool and really helpful since I can now speed through my second playthrough for a different ending

It's definitely not for everyone. If you came in with the expectation of playing Disgaia with Digimon, temper those expectations. I am thoroughly enjoying the game, for what it is. There are some incredibly tense scenes that I found myself on the edge of my seat.

I've been a lifelong digimon fan. I avoided most of Survive's prerelease marketing. I got it on switch day one. My experience with visual novels is also limited to ace attorney. Playing survive has been interesting for sure. I'm not in love with every aspect, might need to fiddle with some settings, but I am finding enough to love to keep me coming back. Really hoping it picks up after chapter 5. As an adventure fan, i love the characters and the set up. I love seeing these kids ask the harder question that make sense for kids stranded in an unknown world. Really hoping to come out of this game with a positive outlook.

That's a VERY fair take and experience! I would say Chapter 5 onward is where the pace and story get really, really good. I'm about to finish Chapter 11 and 12 and am so stoked.

As someone who’s never played VN before (except from ace attorney) I can say that I was more invested in the VN part than the battle, I like the battle and I did end up grinding for levels but there were certain points where I just want to know what happens next and was tempted to rush in without grinding just to find out, great story telling from them!

it's a pretty good game, if you go in expecting a visual novel like they advertised. I'm at chapter 9 right now and I'm really enjoying the game so far. can't wait to play it at least a 2nd time since there are things you can only do in a 2nd playthrough.

Great overview! Finished my first route today, and aside from the few bits that needed a little extra polish (translation and editing especially), it's exactly what I was hoping for. I would love a Survive 2. You mention it in the intro, but since you haven't yet, I'd suggest playing Devil Survivor. I think it does basically everything Survive does, but better. More routes, better pacing, deeper gameplay. The only thing is that it's not Digimon, so if that was the thing that made Survive bearable for anybody, they wouldn't like Devil Survivor.

I just got to Chapter 5 myself and I'm absolutely loving the game and the darker story. Started off with picking choices based off of what I might actually say myself, until I spoiled things for myself and found out that certain things only happen in certain paths, so I decided to focus on the Moral route for this first playthrough, then go through the other routes in NG+.

I love this game for the story and, just like you mentioned, the fact that the characters were so good to make you feel things for them is amazing. I would give it a 8.5/10

Great video! If I could make ONE quality of life change to Digimon Survive, I'd like to be able to pull up my phone for area select (L2 / ZL on controller) without having to enter the "area select" screen. For the first 10 hours or so my idiot brain kept hittingL2 / ZL when I meant to hit R2 / ZR to pull out my phone to scan the area, which would accidentally boot me out of the area and force me to load back in. I doubt they would change something like that in a patch but if they would, it would be amazing. :)

I have to say, I think the morality placement is a good idea. The game is marketed to have a morality choice that affects things, and knowing what is where makes it easier for people to do morality specific runs, removing some of the guesswork. Personally I just picked the answer I liked but I did appreciate that I at least knew what kind of answers they were. Also, yeah, it is unfortunate that there's a lot of backlash from people who simply did not research the game. And I know there are a couple people who feel the delay didn't add much either not knowing (or not grasping) that the delay was caused by a team shift. And as much as some say they should have been more transparent with the issues that was going on, seeing people still complain despite more information on the issues tells me it wouldn't have mattered anyway.

I was pleasantly surprised, didn’t do a lot of research on the game before purchasing, got surprised by the visual novel part but the more I played it the more I liked it. It pulls you in, you feel invested in the characters and the outcomes. Every little action you take can change things dramatically. Definitely worth picking up

I hope it does well with what they were expecting in numbers because I wouldn't mind survive being a series like the story games or world games. More experimenting titles within the franchise would be nice to have. I'm definitely loving Survive, and it's take in the franchise. Hopefully this will allow them to branch out in other genres, while also revisiting this style of game.

Personally, I LOVE Digimon Survive. I think the fact that this is a visual novel makes the story that much more interesting. I enjoy the characters and how the Digimon evolution changes based on choices you make. I love seeing all the evolution paths you can take. I will say the weakest part of the game is the battle system. It just seems boring. Still, for someone who loves Digimon, this is definitely a must have.

Absolutely loved it. It's a breath of fresh air to get a game that focuses on delivering a great story and this game does that beautifully. A game that takes a "kids story" and recontextualizes it for a more mature audience and delivers 4 completely different and excellent endings. Sure, it could have had a better gameplay but this game was not going to get such a budget. It's a very mature and innovative addition to the franchise that I'm very glad it saw the light and it's getting the praise it deserves. It opens the door to more mature Digimon content and we could get VERY good things in the future thanks to it.

This is a very fair and honest review Karn my only problem with Survive is that I like to collect physical media and Guilmon is a digital exclusive in my region and he’s my favorite Digimon 😕 I’m worried if I buy it physically then I won’t get Guilmon but at the same time I don’t want to pay $60 for a digital copy

My main complaint is that partner digimon evolutions are recruitable in free battles. I wish they were exclusive to the partner evolution trees so they feel more special.

@@Karn_EX That's true but it was so deflating that the game itself spoiled Agumon's wrathful ultimate form for me because I evolved into it from a free battle digimon and it revealed it on his tree. Partner evolutions at the very least should stay silhouetted until they evolve into those forms.

Haven't played tons yet, but so far the game's great. The one thing I do wish the game did (marketing said this so not a spoiler) was for all partner digimon, to full branching evos like Agumon does. I think that was something a lot of people expected before launch (You yourself even made a video on it, as did other channels) and while it's not a dealbreaker, I think it absolutely would have made the game even cooler.

Agree there. Triceramon and Tuskmon as digivolutions for Agumon felt like a weird choice that I’m glad I found out about beforehand as I could manage to avoid them. Strange Wrath path didn’t have Skullgreymon as an option

Pretty much my exact sentiments. It is a lot of reading especially in the beginning but once you get invested in the characters it gets easier and even exciting at times to seek out dialogue.

Very coherent and cohesive review Karn, I also really appreciate how minimally you leak spoilers during. I have only been able to see parts of your lube streams... LOL but it's honestly cool because while I love being able to interact with you live and also BONUS: now I have an inside joke with one of my favorite youtubers ... lube streams... Hah! Also I'm immune to spoilers at this point in my life, but it will be cool to be surprised by most of the game, which I AM going to play. Because between you and Digiknow I've been convinced I will love this game even tho the only visual novel-esque game I really played was cybersleuth. I enjoyed the game but then again I love Graphic Novels and I love digimon so this was already a win for me, and I’m trying to 100% on PS4, as someone that has all the story games from Sleuth on Vita to both Sleuth and Hacker for PS4 and Switch I can say this is in my opinion a good slowdown from those games it’s new and brings something else to the table I respect your take and hope to see more from your channel you gained a sub today

I could not put it down the entire first week it was out and beat my first playthrough. New game plus is so much easier to burn through with the skip text feature (not spoiling anything at all) and I’m already halfway through my second one. It is an amazing game and everything I hoped it would be. The story is so gripping and I love basically all the characters. Even if you don’t like visual novels, I think this is the perfect balance between text and battles because you can do them whenever you want. I really hope they make this another side series and do more with this style of game

If anything this game is a good starting point for future Digimon visual novel srpgs. I'm almost done my first playthrough just debating on whether I should go back to an earlier save to unlock Miu's Ultimate since I'm unsure If I have anymore chances to raise her affinity since everyone just left the school saying they are going to the final battle and she still needs 3 points lol

I do own the switch version- physical copy, bought on release day- I personally have noticed that battle menu’s load uncomfortably slow, however, my biggest issue has just been joycon drift, which is just a natural consequence of playing on an old switch. Then again, I’m not a big gamer boy, in the past month the thing I’ve played most- aside from survive- has been yugioh master duel or smash bros. Overall? I’d say getting the switch version is worth it if your joycons aren’t goofing with ya, or ya have a different controller, I’d say it’s worth it. As the negatives you mentioned were relatively similar to what you experienced.

Its worth i think. As someone who wanted more story or concentration on the four Sovereigns i really like it. The cast is great and the deaths are also disturbing. The partners are also cool. Its really good when you like good stories characters. And Fanglongmon gets a new Mode also cool. I give it a rating 09/10 or 97%. It should get a Anime or a sequel what should be no problem because many liked it and even when you search for it its called about 90 or 95% liked it. So a sequel or Anime is pretty likely.

I loved the game and while this was my first VN game I absolutely loved the story and the characters. There is so much to praise here (and get slapped with feels ! ). The more mature story is so nice to see and I hope they make an anime with story like this even thou Ghost Game is good but this is more entertaining for franchise veteran from the 90s to go even darker and more deep. And the game captures the feel in the core of digimon. Bonds and characters that face their own problems and learn from them. Huge recommendation from me !

I, too, felt the first-chapter lag, but got over that quickly. Probably my biggest complaint* would be that the battles throughout 95% of the game seemed too easy even on hard mode (there were so many battle mechanics that could have made for awesome strategy play, but they weren't needed) -- BUT, at one not-quite-the-final-boss-but-almost-there battle, suddenly my top 'mons were getting one-shotted. Felt like that could have been evened out a bit more. Also, the first ending I encountered was pretty meh, but I'm holding out judgement until I see some of the others. Based on the voice credits alone, I know there were some potentially epic outcomes I didn't unlock. I think you hit the nail on the head with who will enjoy this game and who won't. Definitely worth the price for me, but I know it won't be for everyone. *OK, I did have one issue with the Steam version. Apparently, if you play on a second monitor (at least, in my case where I have a TV with a different resolution to my laptop), it can cause issues that prevent the game from launching properly. I will sometimes have to unplug my TV, launch the game, plug in the TV again, go into window mode, move the game to the other monitor, and go back to full screen mode. I've gotten used to it, but it still seems ridiculous. Took me an hour and a half to figure that out the first time.

For sure! It's definitely a bit Marmite as far as games go haha And yeah I have that problem with a ton of Steam games! You can also fix it by right clicking desktop > display and setting the monitor you want to play on as the main monitor

I had that same error with the steam version, if you leave the game on borderless window, it's functionally the same as full screen but wont cause the game to not start. then the issue will be that the game will default to the first monitor, however all you need to do is press Shift + Windows button + Right Arrow Key and it'll change monitors

I have had no performance issues on switch. I have played 40hrs so far. I bought it off Best Buy and it never came so I just bought it digital. I like your item on the morale choices that would be cool if they could get that in there. The story is amazing and the tactical is fun! I come the era of Zelda on NES, Suikoden, Breath of Fire, Legend of the Dragoon, and Final fantasy so reading text feels at home to me. I started a excel for all the questions so my teens and I can keep track of the answers. Great video.

The end of part 3 seriously bummed me out. All of that stuff that happened and was said right at the end there was just insanely depressing. Not going into details for obvious reasons, just wasn't expecting to feel what I felt. As for issues, I've experienced one total game freeze on PS4. Not the game app crashing, but the game itself freezing at the end of a battle right before showing the level up screen. Had to close the game and restart it.

This was my first digimon game in a long while (I'm pretty sure the only ones I played were Rumble Arena 1/2 and World Data Squad) and my second return to the digimon fandom (stopped in frontier and only watched Tri in between) and I really enjoyed the game although it's a flawed game with a lot of room for improvement if they keep making survive style games. I'll hold my praise and criticism to a possible spoiler discussion. I'd also like to thank you Karn since your channel is a big part of why I'm back to digimon and I probably wouldn't even know about Digimon Survive if not for me watching your videos.

I'd still say it's an 8/10 even if I believe there are a lot that could be improved and even if I'm not the biggest fan of either VN or TRPGs. I'm really interesting in seeing Digimon Survive videos in the future (after awhile so people can enjoy the game unspoiled) such as a full spoiler review / your opionions of the game, story and characters, maybe seeing how good were your predictions or even seeing a version of some of your series with the survive digimon partners.

Picked it up after having preordering it a while back. Finished first run on the moral route, doing a new game + run on the same route. Playing the Switch version, didn’t have any issues game play wise.

I had no issue's with my switch version. I'm in my 3rd playthrough right now and I got one scenario in my very first playthrough where I noticed the backdrop of the loading screen was kind of moving in a choppy(?) way. But as soon as the battle scenario started it was all good. Of course the loading screen might take a bit longer compared to the ps4/5 but mean that doesn't really bother me

I think this game is such a breath of fresh air for the Digimon game franchise too. I’m not saying I hate story games or world games but I enjoy the deviation from the status quo and hope we get some more adventurous games that play with the Digimon IP

The launch was definitely pretty bad, but I got help from a rep from Bandai Namco to get my DLC code for Guilmon as Amazon did not give me mine and acted like they had no idea what was going on with that. They were also very helpful when I pointed out some screen shots of some of the text errors and they are actively working to patch some of those issues. As for playing the game, I am loving it. Even on my first playthrough I got the moral champion, but ended up with the harmony Ultimate and Mega and took the Harmony route. Even knowing where the options lead, I still answered how I felt it was best in the circumstances. My second and third playthroughs are more focused on unlocking the other digivolutions and paths though. I would like if you were able to get 3 more Guilmon for the sake of keeping 1 at each evolution level though.

I can agree with the game having a slow start. I admittedly stopped playing the game after starting chapter 2, but after hearing it picks up later, I’ll try to start it back up some time. This is also my first visual novel game, so that could be another factor as to why it hadn’t grabbed me yet. However, one of my biggest issues with the game so far is the morality system and its…unusual color scheme. To explain, I was trying to get Greymon as my first evolution, and since Harmony was the green path while Moral was the red path, I figured Harmony was the way to get Greymon. However, when I got to the event, I was shocked to see Tyrannomon instead, and now I’m going to have to “balance” it out with Moral choices. For the record, I haven’t been following the announcements, so I was unaware of how the system actually played out, but that shouldn’t excuse it. I doubt I’m the only one who went in blind and thought that Harmony was the path to get Greymon.

It feels like a darker remake/reboot of the first season, but where it succeeds where a lot of edgy reboots fail is that at its core it still has those core values and lessons that made that first season so special. Like yeah, it is an edgy reimagining of Adventure. But it still has the same heart. Even after completing the first route I did, it makes me want to go back and save the characters I don't even like to see if they can become better people. And I dunno I feel like I can't say that about a lot of games I've played that have characters I don't like.

I have it on switch and I didn't get any issues. Also with non big games like this it's best to pre-order the game to get the codes. Its so that the store can put an order for you with bandai. Around my area only like 10 people got the game from my game stop.

I agree with the "organic choices" aspect. Randomize my answers on New Game, but give me the color coded answers on NG+ when I am trying to do all the other routes.
