So, in summary; Change 3 things to make this a perfect pot. A metal lid, measurement marks on the pot, and Silicone on the handles instead of plastic. Really, those are some pretty minor changes for a company already making plenty of similar camping equipment. I hope they do make those changes. Good Breakdown Luke.

Or even better: A second smaller pod that is the lid. Then he wouldnt need to carry the second pod inside. For the price one can get cheaper titanium pots from chinese manufacturers like lixada or toaks (with measuring marks).
@harduphiker
@harduphiker 9 месяцев назад
@@martinerhard8447 I have the Lixada, can confirm, or the Fire Maple 1L Aluminium Pot, as that has a heat exchanger and isn't much more weight - 190g vs 150g. Has measurements...I wish it didn't have the silicone lid, as that can melt! Otherwise good.

@@martinerhard8447Curious....how could a smaller pot serve as a lid without falling into the pot?

It's probably a rice pot. I have a few household pots and camping pots with no measurement markings here in Japan, that we just cook rice in. The Japanese figure since it's a staple food here, everyone pretty much has an idea how much rice and water to put in it. Always keep in mind the country of origin for products. They may sell in other markets, but those markets are not the primary target of the item. Probably explains the plastic lid too.

I love my Toaks titanium 1100 with a bail handle for use over a fire, the longer type "handles" and the of course a titanium lid. I also love my Soto windmaster stove. For me it is the ultimate combo. I wouldn't buy this pot because of the plastic lid, but I like the size and the idea of the rough bottom surface to help prevent movement on your stove of choice. Not having markings would not be an issue.

on my most recent motorcycle trip, my Sea to summit X Pot failed, it has a huge crack on the side between the silicone and the metal of the botom, so i went to the nearest camping store and bought something quite similar to this, i must say this kind of product is great, not fancy, no bs, and you can store your food inside.

Volume markings are helpful in a general way, especially if you can see them inside and outside of the pot. Camp cooks using a pot can generally estimate volume based on experience.

Markings on the inside collect food and are hard to clean. My one pot that has markings has them written our, lot of zeros to catch food

After making thousands of cups of coffee, tea and hot chocolate I usually eyeball the water level in my pot. If anything I prefer the level markings on the outside of the pot. I love my Soto gear.

In my kit, my New River holds a Soto Americus stove, a small butane canister, and a triangle can stabilizer. Been fantastic so far. Not had the handles overheat / melt. And I did mark my pot on the outside. Great value, transfers & holds heat better than Ti pots in my opinion. Love it

I melted the edge of my New River Pot on its first outing, while using an alcohol stove. Maybe it was because the windshield was a bit too effective but I anyway switched to using a metal lid from then on. For any of my pots without markings, I just add some indentations with a center punch.

Ultralight cook setup, Toaks 550ml ti pot, BRS stove, 110g iso, long ti spoon, HotLips silicone lip protector, mini Bic, aluminum foil. Everything fits in the pot except the spoon. Enough capacity for any freeze dried meal. This is a known recipe, about as small and affordable as a kit can be.

I have almost the same setup. Works like a charm. All it took was a little research to come up with it. I'm surprised Luke doesn't do a similar setup? Few few actual individual backpackers and hikers ever bother with a 1,000ml pot.

I've had one for several months, the markings aren't a deal breaker at all. I use the Katadyn Be Free that has markings on it so I know how much I put it. IMO the best pot I've owned for me, I store my gas, lighter, wash cloth, and Soto Amicus stove + a few seasoning sachets inside the pot and it's a killer size, perfect for me.

1 Measures- not a problem, fill your cup with the amount of water you will drink. Mugs are normally 300 or 400ml so its also your measure. 2. Lid at 22g is perfect. I have a similar pot with fry pan lid at +100g. It never gets used. 3. Coated aluminium is excellent, durable and lighter than titanium. 4. Packs a 8oz 330g gas cartridge is massive, saving weight and space. 5. -ve A light weight heat exchanger would be perfection. ❤❤

@martinerhard8447
@martinerhard8447 9 месяцев назад
If the lid was another smaller pot then he wouldnt need the extra pot on the inside. Coated alumium pots are typically heavier than titanium pots. But better for cooking in them of course. Best dont use metal spoons in them to not scratch the coating Maybe check out the optimus terra cookset. Non-Stick coated aluminium with heat exchanger, measuring marks and silikon wrapped handles.

those pots with mini-pan lids look cool. Though the lid is likely useless as a pan, it can most definetly work as a bowl for coffe or diving meals between two people.@@martinerhard8447

Luke why is it such a big deal about the lack of measurement markings, if you know it's a 1000ml capacity,then 1/4way up will be 250ml,1/2 500 ml,3/4 up 750 ml 🙂

He's just stating the fact that the company puts measurements on many of their other pots but didn't put them on this model.
@phasmata3813
@phasmata3813 9 месяцев назад
But at what point is it 1000 ml? Quite often a container's maximum capacity isn't measured all the way up to the brim and is actually cut off somewhere lower since no one is going to try to handle a liter of boiling water that is literally up to the brim and spilling over at the slightest jitter. The wider the vessel gets the bigger the difference differing fill levels makes. Plus as the other commenter mentioned, it is clearly within Soto's ability to provide markings since they do on so many other pots.

The nice part about it is they didn't overdo it with gizmos. It might have been nice to include a cup that fits. That's all I take backpacking. Sometimes I bring a little fitted fry pan for pancakes in the morning. That's about the right size for 1 or 2 people.

Measurement markings aren’t that big of a deal to me. Most of the pots I use have them, but I can’t remember ever referencing them while cooking. The rough bottom is a great feature, too. If you need to make a rough bottom, just pull down your pants and sit on a rock.

I watched many of your videos, and I noticed your multiple storage bags. Have you ever used totes or any of those storage box systems? I will not use Pelican boxes but maybe the reasonably priced boxes at Harbor Freight. Currently, I'm trying to set have two grab-n-go camping sets. One for two people that is light and practical, and one for a group or longer camping time that I have all the possible creature comforts ss possible. I'm tired of missing or leaving stuff at home because I forgot to transfer something when packing for a trip. For the small set, I'm buying Coho boxes. They are strong roto molded boxes. While they cost over $110 online, at Costco the regular price is $50 and from time to time they are on sale for $40. each box can be secure with two padlocks, have two trays for things you need easy access to, and three velcro hold zippered bags inside the lid. It is a shame they don't have bigger sizes. What did you go through that ended up selecting your current system?

I know titanium is the trendy material today, but I still think aluminium is a good option. And especially when it’s hard-anodized and safe. For just boiling water I’ll bring my titanium pot, but when cooking real food I’d pick a hard-anodized aluminium or aluminium with ceramic or traditional non-stick coating. The weight difference is fairly small and cooking is easier with better conductivity.

Hi Luke!: Thanks for showing how you pack your cook kit! I have a similar setup with my little Optimus Terra Solo kit. It is a lot smaller than the one you show, but my Optimus Crux lite stove fits inside with a cleaning sponge and a washcloth. Will have to add a piece of tin foil and some paper towels also! This little cook set has the rubberized handles also, and I have already scorched the insulation on the handles! Even this tiny set has markings for the pot (SADLY missing from the SOTO!) and is non stick. The SOTO is a good price, but if they upcharged the thing to around $40 and added markings and a metal lid. I would probably get one if them. But I LOVE the Optimus and my larger Toaks pot!!

Way more concerned about non-metallic components. It's a liablity and a limit to functionality. Just get a titanium pot / lid. Or if price is that big of a deal, just get a stainless steel pot / lid. Lack of markings doesnt actually matter though. Its harder to read the linea than to just estimate how full the thing is. They are only useful to remind you what the total volume is.

My titanium 1100 ml Toaks pot with bail handle costs a little more. It has measurement markings I don't really care. Camping in the dark, they will be sometimes useless without lighting. A one cup Wildo 240ml 24g foldable cup will take care of water measurements. What I don't like about these chinese made pots is the indentation on bottom. Made I quess to limit the heat intensity under, or just to add some strength. That flat bottom of your 1 liter pot is to my liking for cleaning.

It looks like an ok little pot, but it's very pricey for such a basic aluminum vessel.

Plastic lids are a dralbreaker for me, and if a pot isnt realistically useful for anythingbother than boiling water, it might as well be Titanium.

Is the soto windmaster or MSR pocket rocket 2 better for all year all around use? I have the BRS 3000 stove too but its not nearly as consistent as the pocket rocket so I am leaving that out of the question.

I've used a windmaster for 4 years all year round. Strong wind and ice on the ground. Its faultless.

Plastic lid, really, and plastic grips for the handles come on. Those two areas need to be improved on. The price is good until a new lid and grips are needed. So are there any American companies that make this product and if so what are the comparisons?
