Perfect cook kit for a one night is stopping by Subway before I hit the trail. No cooking, no cleanup, and no weight on the way back. Even comes in its own trash bag!

I live in Alaska. We’ve had wildfires a lot recently. So I adjusted by grabbing a Taco Bell Crunchwrap Supreme when heading out before getting to the wilderness. And a sub for the first lunch or dinner whilst setting up camp. It makes life easier. The trash gets thrown in a gallon baggie in the bear canister to cut down on food smells. Bears are big here 🐻😂💕🏕️

I work at REI and was showing a customer the toaks 750 pot. Right as I said "too bad that lid doesnt snap on" they turned it upside down and it stayed put. Too my surprise, just that one on the shelf was slightly bent or out of shape enough to just barely snap on. He was sold immediately haha.

The Soto Amicus stove on Amazon shows at $48.95 (NOT $84.00, like the MSR, which, by the way has been reduced to $75.15, as of 01/10/2024) The Soto Windmaster stove (my personal favorite) shows at $64.99 (regular $69.99). I'll stick with my Windmaster; it has been a GREAT stove, with no problems, regarding the igniter! Another GREAT video, Dan!!! Thanks for all you do and all you are! Happy Trails, my friend!

Strictly water boiling here also. For my hikes I use a 750 alu pot (+wobbly lid) which fits a gas canister and a MSR Pocketrocket 2 stove, true to it's name. Plus I use a foldable plastic tripod for the canister for stability and also a piece of 'extra strong version/ribbed' household alu foil (with double folded edges for some extra strength) as a windscreen or protection for inside-tent cooking. The alu can be folded/reused many times and also quite small for packing. I'm amazed when seeing people prepare meals with fresh ingredients, on a trangia burner, filet mignon in mushroom-pepper sauce and sautéed asparagus and all. Usually at the end of the day, I'm famished, almost counting the minutes of my just hydrated meal and I have to tell myself to actually let it hydrate properly. Still too much other stuff on my 'nice to have' hike gear list, to consider a titanium pot...

My cook kit consist of the Stanley 700 ml pot, a 14oz gsi outdoor mug, BSR stove, and a tea strainer for my coffee, all of which plus fuel fits inside the stanley. It may weigh twice as much as other kits all together but its all tough and cost me about $50 all together.

Everyone knows the old adage about ounces, pounds and pain but at point there’s diminishing returns. Sometimes just having better food, gear or whatever just makes the experience better. I remember listening to a podcast discussing backpacking elk hunts and one of the guys was incredibly weight conscious to the point that all of his meals were drinkable in a protein shake mixer. Didn’t take a stove of any kind, he viewed it all as calories intake. By the end of the 6 day hunt his partner who was telling the story says that he noticed the weight conscious guy was watching his every bite. Instead he had packed mountain house, instant potatoes, and even ramen noodles. Yeah, he had to carry all the extra weight but he felt better, slept better and had better emotional energy.

Try the lid from the Stanley cook kit! Yes, the lid is stainless, but it fits well and the weight difference is minimal. The strainer in the lid is far better than others. Granted, I do replace the plastic lid tab in the middle of the lid with a tiny keyring.

Others have mentioned the GSI Minimalist (which often goes on sale for ~$29 vs normal price of $35). I use this cook system and found that it is the best for those who just want to boil water for themselves. It is so versatile and lightweight. Ive used mine for 5 years now and haven’t found a better cook for system. It comes with a silicon grip handle which works great. Ive never burned myself using it. It also has a coozie which is great for handling the pot and keeping hot drinks hot when its cold. The lid it comes with can be used to sip or as a lid for boiling water by simply turning the lid upside down so it fits loosely. I highly recommend this cookset! Its the only piece of gear that i have not upgraded or replaced because it has lasted so long and imho, i havent seen a better replacement.

Different trips require different cook kits. Long marches with a light pack and for just boiling water, I go for the MSR Pocket rocket or the MSR Reactor. For fishing trips or basecamp I go for a bigger burning head like the MSR Windpro. If it's cold you have to use a multifuel like the MSR Whisperlite. I myself have more than 20 different burners. It's crazy but can't think of selling a single one of them.

Awesome video. Have you tried 1-cup pyrex silicon lids? I opted for the Bestergot titanium french press. Same size with the option for coffee and the lid has a strainer. Swap the strainer rod with a thumb screw when you don't need it and it keeps the wood knob in place. It's not perfect but has been great so far.

On that missing screw... Bring your stove to a hardware store with open bins of screws. Randomly try various small metric stainless steel machine screws, till you find the correct thread pitch and diameter (it will screw in the old threaded hole, nicely). If it is too long, careful work with pliers, a grindstone and a tin of cooling water will fix that excess length.

I liked the video. I’m a sucker for more efficient cooking stuff. BTW, The reason the Toaks weighs almost as much as the Soto is due to the aluminum handles and bracket on the Toaks. The Soto titanium pot will need either handles or the coozy with some sort of claw handle because the titanium will convey heat better than aluminum. I’d bet the Soto pot with coozy and handle is going to be heavier than the Toaks pot. I think if Soto sold just the top more folks would buy that item. I know I would. But I’m not paying $38 for a plastic top. That’s something only rich Dudes like Dan can afford.

That's a lot of stuff to buy just to basically recreate the GSI Minimalist which you can pick up for 35 bucks. It also includes a much better pot grabber that I actually prefer over handles. The one advantage this setup has is packability. With the GSI set, the lid won't quite go on snug when I put my pocket rocket deluxe in. Other stoves fit fine, the PRD is just a big stove.

I don't care about weight, I vanlife so I'm in the camp with the vanlifers, overlanders, car campers, and teardrop community who loves the Stanley Two-Cup cookset nesting with an Ozark Trails stainless steel cup with the butterfly handles. For your money, that is the best buy system because you get the full cookset plus a mug, a straining lid that fits both and locks on the cook kit for about $20. It's the perfect thing for a cup of coffee or tea on the go if weight isn't a deal breaker.

First a question for you: Have you tried the FlipFuel Fuel Transfer Device yet? I'd really like to know what you think of it! Same here Dan, I just cook water. My cookware line up: Toaks 750mm titanium pot. I have to rubber band the lid anyway, the pot gets packed so tight with stuff, even a tight fitting lid would pop off. Toaks long handle, smooth bowl, titanium spoon -- sans carabiner. Pocket Rocket 2 -- w/o Piezo Igniter. I carry a Bic lighter anyway. Then I clip on a small aluminum windbreak. Finally, I wrap my camp rag around the inside of the pot to keep things from rattling around in there. There's not much more annoying than having something clanking inside the pack.

@christophersiano969
@christophersiano969 5 месяцев назад
My setup is very similar. I use the BOT 1 liter titanium with the screw-on lid. I wrap the canister in a small bandana to reduce the rattle and prevent rust stains on the pot. (the rim of the canister always seems to rust a little.) Stove is some Ti Pocket Rocket knockoff that has worked fine for several years now. The extra height of the pot fits my flexible spork (no idea on the brand - something I grabbed at Hilton Tent City years ago and it's still in one piece) I also keep some heavy aluminum foil for a wind block and a mini Bic lighter. Why? Always felt the igniter on the stove would fail - never has. But I've used the Bic many times to get a fire started in challenging conditions. Yea, it's a bit more weight, but it's pretty much bomb proof. The bandana allows me to screw the lid on or off on those really windy days were you fear (and sometimes predict) the pot is going to blow off the stove. I'm still looking for a spoon that is long enough to reach into the bottom corners of a mountainhouse pouch without your hand getting icky, but somehow collapse to fit into my pot. It's the one missing link.

Their new arrival 750 titanium cup at REI website is like a wide pot as opposed to the tall cup form. Probably not what you were hoping for, if that's the thing.

Don’t forget Dan, no handles on the Soto pot so need to add the weight of the grabber ;-) I’m with you…handles all the way 😀

FYI: Another lid that fits (albeit a tad snug) into the Toaks 750 is the lid for the GSI halulite minimalist set. That lid is amazing for sipping coffee. 👌🏻

Ive been rocking a $30 walmart kit for years. It’s a bit heavier but never had an issue with the hardware itself

For quite a while I used the old aluminum fosters can with fiberglass cord wrapped around it... but those are quite flimsy. Much lighter than titanium though!

Dan, you should try the Fire-Maple 600ml G3 Petrel Ultralight Pot, it has the straining plastic lid, a heat exchanger, is made in a way that you don't need a wind screen (you do have to have a 3 arm stove, like the Pocket Rocket) and saves fuel because of the heat exchanger.

6 oz, but remember no wind screen, and the fuel savings.

I use (or “borrow “) the spoon from those milkshakes machines you buy at gas station . They are long enough and light weight that I don’t need to buy a $20 titanium spoon from REI. Plus I get the shake

They make a repair kit for MSR stoves too. I have needed to use it twice.

Ozark trail made a good hard plastic spoon that went out of production right after you talked about it. It was only 99 cents.

Dan have you tried the Vargo Bot ? I have both sizes and it solved a lot of my issues you stated in your video. I’d love to know what you think.

I’d say there’s a big opportunity for someone to fix a lids for all these pots and pans out there. I mean it’s a lid! I use the Snowpeak Trek 900, lid is crap but I holds a bigger canister with a stove( Soto Wind master) also still looking for the perfect set up. And yes I’ve got several different stoves and pots. I do like my Fusion Trek I think it’s called for safety reasons.

The titanium and aluminum pots weigh the same because of the handles on the Toaks. They also make a 750ml version without the handles that is lighter
