Despite the fact that I've heard the original so many times, there were so many parts of this that I had never noticed before!! And even of the parts I fully remembered, it was still a blast to get to explain them all in my own way, and hopefully bring even more appreciation to this incredible rendition.

Have you noticed the little "bass ladder" Geoff does as Layne is finishing "add a little spice"? You can see it in the video - pay attention to him in the back of on that

My boyfriend and I were carving pumpkins last night and he’s a low bass and was trying to sing that last top note and did it in falsetto and I was like, okay now do it in chest and he just looked at me like “absolutely not”. 😂 He’s been messing around with Subharmonics since I introduced him to Geoff’s music but I think the high chest voice would be a longer journey. I love getting to hear other music people break down and talk about cool music stuff! It’s the best. 😅

This is the one I listened to first after I found Geoff and his cover of Sixteen Tons. It is now an ongoing obsession along with Home Free. Musical theatre with VoicePlay and my country fix with Home Free.

I’m so glad Layne’s arrangement is finally getting the attention it deserves. ALL of his arrangements are some kinda genius, but there are several, like this, that are just over the top great. A couple thoughts: A) Not every low note is Geoff. There’s one you mention that resolves with a beatbox sound-I suspect that’s Layne all the way through. He can go pretty low. B) With all the great detail you brought up, I was expecting you to notice the really, REALLY difficult arpeggios during the little bit where Santa speaks and Earl replies “You aren’t comprehending the position that you’re in.” It is SO FREAKING HARD to do arpeggios in staccato, having to hit every single note dead on. I suspect there is a little work in editing to make it that tight but these guys do it in concert as well so they’re actually hitting those notes. C) This is an awesome reaction. I don’t know where you teach but I bet it’s hella fun to be in your class. And finally: D) Is that a Merovingian knot? I actually researched tie knots for a story I was writing, but I’ve only seen a few of the more complex knots out “in the wild.” Very cool.

You aren't even halfway through and I have to comment before my brain overflows with new info you are ready to impart. 1) PLEASE do more of these. I am not musically trained so I am one of those that enjoys your teaching moments. I tend to process things visually, not auditorily, so get more out of VP than other groups. But unless someone points it out I miss so much. Being able to see the image while you can't means I know where we are to orient myself yet be open to what you hear. (Hard to explain, but why I often watch/listen to you over and over). 2) I have been watching This is Halloween a lot also. I watched another reactor/analyst who also pointed out the "background singers"were using a lot of the words to the melody but not all of them. (12:23 on your reaction) this...will...be... and I caught it before you pointed it out! For me, that was so exciting. 3)So never apologize for stopping. When you stop, there is a reason. You don't yammer on about yourself or try to show us you know so much more about music than we do. That is we are here. Keep it up. I loved this and got so much out of it. (And I have very so so headphones but caught the "drowning in my tears" moment the 10th or 12th time I listened. Yay, me!)

There is a blind reactor on RU-vid and when I listen to his reactions, without the visual distractions, I always notice more than I did before, even if I’ve watched the video a dozen times! Love this reaction. And it truly is a reaction! I use earbuds and even I can hear the stutter between left and right ears.

Heh another youtuber joyfully dorking out on VoicePlay -- love it! I can never seem to get enough of this infectious enthusiasm you guys bring to it. So refreshing and reassuring in this day when so many act cool and detached. Anyway, not a musical issue but one of acting: is noone gonna comment on how Geoff's facial expression during "although I don't play fair" goes from conversational to pure evil? Just a bit of great acting to go with his superhuman, subterranean bass. OK, now I'm dorking out myself...

This was a fantastic breakdown. Like I said in the chat, I really appreciate the experience you bring to your analyses. I've learned a lot, particularly about the support the backing vocals lend to the whoever is singing the lead. When you aren't trained as a singer, it can be difficult to pull your attention away from that leading vocal, much less understand what you're hearing. But I've found myself paying a lot more attention to what's going on in the background since listening to your comments, and it makes for a more enriching experience overall. My two cents- keep these 'blind' analyses up! The videos are amazing, and always worthy of praise (because golly, the work these guys put in!), but the music is ultimately what we're here for.

I’ve watched the originals and reactions of Voiceplay content countless times but when I watch your vids there are always little things you hear or notice that I missed… and mostly that’s because you pause and focus on different parts of the songs. These guys and gals are SO talented they create a full piece that appeals to the ears as a whole so it’s easy to miss things. So I guess I’m saying… don’t stop doing your thing! 🙌

I LOVED this advanced breakdown! If your reaction videos can be termed 'A Capella Music Theory 101' then this is 'A Capella Music Theory 201'. I like the longer format for this more dissected review of the material. You don't need to apologize for the number of pauses, they're each for a good reason, and we expected more stops to highlight and give a proper explanation of the theory in play. That's how we learn, so it's all good there. I think this would be a very good series if you can dedicate the time to it. I would request Geoff's "Monster Mash" because I know he outdid himself on that one with adding Bach and Beethoven to it, and the many other tweaks he did. Thanks for your dedication to the craft and sharing the joy you have for vocal music.

Honestly, I think it is a great breakdown. I have no problem with you revisiting this kind of a format. And yeah, when you're not having the visual aspect to distract yourself, you really do pick up on a lot of different details that you wouldn't have picked up on before. So, by all means, keep listening to stuff that you've heard before to give a more in-depth analysis... and hey, if it is your first time hearing it without the visuals, there are still (technically) elements of it that you are reacting to, so... yay? But yeah, I'd love to see you do 16 Tons like this. Until House of the Rising Sun, that one was my favorite one of his covers.

Yep, I love this format as well as the "standard" reaction format. I still have the impression you missed a tiny thing that Geoff does... It shows off at about 9'10" of your video (1'21" in the original video, on the "s" of "...To add a little spice"), and is repeated several other times while you're analysing another aspect of what is going on at that moment. You can see, and listen, Geoff doing something like "Di-bee-di-doom" that is a super run down. :-)
@aussiebloke609
@aussiebloke609 2 года назад
That's a bit most people seem to miss - can't blame them when there's so much going on, though. :-) There's one or two other points like that I've noticed - not as low, but it seems whenever Geoff isn't singing the main part, he steps back a little and adds to the accompaniment while the focus is on Eli or Layne for a moment, before stepping back into character as Mr. Oogie. Layne really did a phenomenal job with this arrangement. :-)

I would love for you to do a blind analysis of My mother told me. Geoff does some amazing things that I've yet to hear reactors pick up or mention. I found your channel through a rabbit hole of VoicePlay reactions, but seeing this video... I'm very impressed. Anyone who can bring this much joy and energy to analyzing a song they've already heard before is definitely getting a sub from me. Also, I personally love it when commentators and reactors pause the video before talking, and pause often too. It means that there's a meaningful difference between watching the original and watching the commentary. If a reaction video isn't at least 50% longer than the video being reacted to, there's a decent chance I won't click on it, just because it usually means its a "nothing" reaction of "oohs" and "aaahs". (Or if the video is much shorter, like an obviously edited reaction to a movie or TV show, cut to only the relevent bits for commentary). All this to say, while I probably won't comment often, I'll be loving the frequent pausing in every video from you that I watch.

I like your blind reactions because they're just as fun and even more chaotic than your 'normal' reactions. My first taste of a cappella beyond the barbershop, was Rockappella and later, Straight No Chaser. Then Ring of Fire by Home Free happened. Looking for more tasty things to listen to, and I found this. No apologies or looking back now. In an interview with a different reactor, Layne admitted to suggesting Geoff go down an octave on the last note instead of following what was written.

15:20 It's actually not Geoff (if I'm not mistaken), it's Lane doing a beatbox *technique* called Lip Roll. Lip Roll is a beatbox technique used for very low bass, making this hole on the side of your mouth with a yawning expression as beatboxer D-low puts it and sucking in air, you can do the Lip Roll. It is a hard technique to learn but I've been able to do it too.

I REALLY like the change up here. It allows you to go more in depth and thus the viewers can learn more new things. I wonder if it might be a benefit to occasionally add a text box above the video to add little things, either that you forgot to mention white filming your analysis or things that you noticed later after filming. It would be an easy way for you to point out something in the background, like when you are talking about something that changes you could have the term of the thing that the person is doing with an arrow pointing to them? It might be getting a bit close to a college lecture for some, but I think it would allow you to highlight the things that people might have a hard time picking out. Stop as much as you feel the need to, I would think anyone that is watching the video has heard the song 100 times. A reactor nicknamed what you were having some trouble describing as Dragon Breath, as he seems to be doing an impressive impression of Smaug.

Almost nobody noticed how after the words "A roly-poly Santa Claus to add a little spice" Geof does "too doo doo doo doo doo doo doo". I have no idea what sound it starts with, because I don't have a piano, but it's a world championship. It is worth taking a look at 😉

I know the video is old but I'll leave my opinion anyway. I like reaction + analysis at the same time. I don't care how long the video is, as long as it has Voice Play and Geoff I won't waste a second. 😁❤

If you want a 'treat' this Halloween.....catch Qofy's reaction to this song......it was his FIRST Listening to Voiceplay, EVER!.....and his reaction, body language, verbal reaction, facial reactions are PRICELESS!...lol

I think Layne arranged the vocals. You should react to Queen in 5 minutes. Geoff's voice during first verse of "We Are The Champions". I'm a huge Queen fan.

This is a fun song and analysis. If you are up for something hauntingly, powerful. emotional and beautiful try reacting to Home Free's Brothers in Arms.

I do not care if you have heard it before. I actually prefer to hear reactions where there has been time passed to think about what was heard. Or would if I had ever heard one before.
