I see you really like gonis. I only buy the non green ones. All other colors seem to survive longer in captivity
@Social_Reefer
@Social_Reefer Месяц назад
I love gonis but I have to say in my experience they tend to be the most finicky. Unless I run into something new that I really like a lot I don’t see myself buying more. I’ll just enjoy the ones I have for now. They are very beautiful once they adapt to your reef though definitely one of the best looking corals IMO.

@@Social_Reefer do you like aleveopora? I like them better. They are hardier as well.
@Social_Reefer
@Social_Reefer Месяц назад
@@HNiCDuke don’t have any aleveopora but I definitely won’t argue that they are hardier lol Gonis are very delicate they probably are at the bottom end when it comes to hardiness from my experience. I’m a sucker for looks though and I like gonis because they have a lot more color variations but lately I’ve seen some nice aleveoporas with nice coloration so I may take the dive.

Man this tank is so amazing bro its very motivating...hey where do you keep your nitrates and what rocks are those exactly that you use ?
@Social_Reefer
@Social_Reefer Месяц назад
Thank you really appreciate the compliment! I never got that before. My nitrates usually linger at the 25ppm mark every time I test they are in that zone. I used regular dry rock. It took a little over a month to cycle the tank when I first started to get the tank up and running. I put a short clip of what it looked back then in a video I uploaded today, you can go check it out so you can get a visual. Pretty crazy how much things change with time.
@Coral-reef.
@Coral-reef. Месяц назад
@@Social_Reefer so let me ask you do you keep your nitrates at 25 and when do you dona water change ? Also, do you use any chemical media like chemi pure blue ?
@Social_Reefer
@Social_Reefer Месяц назад
Nitrates for me always have stayed in that range for the most part since I allowed the system to settle in. When I first started I kept them much lower to prevent nuisance algae from growing. I did weekly water changes religiously. But after a while (over 1.5 years) I let the system settle into its natural range. I don’t try to force anything. If the corals are happy I’m happy. Right now I dose “All for reef” on a scheduled dosing pump. I also dose microbacter7 weekly and dr tims waste away weekly. And that’s about it. Very rarely I dose aminos or anything else. With the fish food I also does vitachem and selcon. I don’t have a set schedule for water changes to be honest. I’ve gone months without a water change. I usually do a water change right before I introduce new additions to the tank or whenever I’m doing big maintenance like moving stuff around. Anything that requires me to keep my hands in the tank for a prolonged period of time I always do a water change and use carbon. I don’t run carbon 24/7 though only after water changes or whenever I keep my hands in the tank for too long.

Yes I do have a sump. I’m running a skimmer…. But still I would say try to keep your light intensity as low as you are allowed by the demand of the tank at this point. When I first started using lights in my tank I kept the intensity as low as I could and water changes is a must. 15 gallons is perfect for your size system. Make sure not to skip them (weekly). During your water changes also make sure to syphin the gravel and if you stay consistent the results will show. At this point don’t worry about dosing or adding any chemical media since the water changes you are doing weekly is more than enough to cover for any supplementation the tank needs and as you keep moving forward down the line you adjust accordingly…. Also I don’t know if you are but the quality of the water you are using plays a factor on beating the ugly stage faster so having a RODI filter helps. We all go through that stage so done let it discourage you and keep being consistent. You can also look into adding a UV to your system there’s a lot of options available. Hope this helps!

Do you ever get anything directly from the ocean, like a small clam to add? Is this a dumb thing to ask? I just subscribed!
@Social_Reefer
@Social_Reefer Месяц назад
@@dukecity7688 not a dumb question actually I’ve come across reefers who use natural sea water for water changes… I don’t it’s not a resource I have conveniently accessible but even if I did it’s not something I would do personally. Too many unknown factors I’m not aware of. You would have to be extremely educated on what factors play in like introducing contaminants, biodiversity, and solutions if something where to go wrong. But it is possible there are reefers out there that do it.

Beautiful tank bro. His do you get your blasto to look like that? Is that due too feeding?
@Social_Reefer
@Social_Reefer Месяц назад
That blasto is one of my first corals I managed to keep alive since I got into the hobby. Lol I bought it from WWC as a “Boogie Nights” blastomussa a few years back. It was just a single tiny head. I don’t feed honestly I just leave it alone and enjoy the ride I rarely touch it or do anything at all to it. I just make sure I closely observe everything in my tank and make sure proper maintenance is done. It is honestly one of if not the most hardy corals in my tank. It hasn’t given me any issues so far. 🤞

That flow is looking good with only 2 gyres?!
@Social_Reefer
@Social_Reefer Месяц назад
@@porboi1 yeah brother just the two gyres and whatever the return nozzles are pushing in lol gyres are a pain to clean though… On each one I aim for one side upward to agitate the surface which in return creates good turbulence in the water and I point one straight forward. There still are like two dead zones in my tank but the diamond goby is a beast, he does his job well.
