Every video I see of the Euro version of these kinds of cranes amazes me, they run so much smoother and have so much father reach than any I have seen in the USA. Having ran one, I think you did pretty well if you had not used one before. They do take practice like any machine, but they are really useful once you get the hang of them. Thanks for showing us how you did.
I am always amazed when I see the ones capable of rotating out 3-4 big segments first, and then having 2 last parts of the crane being able to extend/extrude out in 3-4 different segments and then still be capable of lifting a massive portacabin without seeing the thing flexing or protesting audibly. Same thing with the underground garbage containers next to my house: the ease with which most operators are capable of lifting out the containers from their fitting, empty it in their truck, and then lowering the containers, sometimes barely scraping the sides of the fitting in the pavement. (When I typed this I didn't get to the massively tall one, I have never seen such a big one). Seeing the struggles I feel a bit like how I felt on a test lesson on a coach, having never driven anything bigger than the biggest delivery van you are allowed to drive with a car license in the Netherlands. At the waiting line for that coach it was pretty apparent that some people were more nervous than me (and I thought I was not doing well hehe), when they found out you'd be driving on the open road immediately a lot of them decided to leave the line: most of them thought you'd be driving around cones and stuff on the terrain of the coach company (which was massive by the way, wow). Someone I know who was a truck driver was pretty amazed that they took you out on the open road immediately, because she experienced going to an industrial zone with a truck first and taking turns without to much other traffic, not going out on the open road and taking roundabouts (those were the weirdest things: feeling like "Hey, shouldn't we be starting to steer or something?" while seeing the center terrain of the rounadabout nearing us, and with the nose of the bus seemingly in the bushes having the instructor go "Aaaaaand now we start steering in to the right fully" :P ).

It’s remembering which toggle does what, then remembering the amount of movement on the toggles required for each movement of the jib & turntable, simple !! ( until you try it, )

Our garbage trucks have a really complicated one for extending the arm towards the bins, hooking it underneath them, slamming a strip down on the top-edge so they can't fall off, and then lifting them towards the inlet of the garbage container of the truck. A colleague of local television (which is a voluntary thing in The Netherlands) worked at the garbage collection services and I once hang onto the side of his truck to film him emptying some of the bins on an open-house day of city hall, unfortunately I could not film the joystick but the ease at which he operated the thing was pretty impressive giving all the buttons and the fact it was a 4 or 5 axis joystick, left-right rotation, left-right panning, forward-backwards rotation, and forward-backwards shifting, along with a separate part on the top looking a bit like a zoom-remote from ENG camera's capable of twisting around the whole thing, while also being equipped with 5 or 6 buttons.

It's not easy, working with a HIAB crane. You have to practice it, and do it a lot of times, before you get used to using a crane. You did get used to it during the course. I think, you did quite well. Nice to see you handling the controls of it.
When operating a HIAB crane, I always like using the main controls and not the remote. I felt is is much smoother in operation. There would be operators who visit the show who can direct the crane very quickly with precision, but this is a good display to show off the attributes of operation. So are you turning up at building sites soon Cassie?
Crane operating is a skill, that takes practise. So, like all skills, really. Hiab is more difficult than a hall crane, because no direction is X, Y or Z
Great job Cassie!! It seemed as if the controls were sticky or Stiff to manage? Or was it your nerves making the choppy movements? I imagine that crane was pretty new and had pristine mechanics to break in over time. Anyway that was cool! I wish Lynden would put these kinds of tools on our trucks! :)
Thank you so much! :D The controls are probably really smooth to operate once you get used to them. Same as excavators controls, they also feel like "all or nothing" before the hands/fingers learn which buttons to push. And suddenly, it's like an extension of your own arms, and that's a really cool feeling! :D I never got used to the controls here during these few minutes though, haha.
@@TruckerCassie My brother drove a tractor for work once to load some big fiber optic rolls onto a pallet (they were pulled by a pully that the tractor moved). He decided to practice using the thing first a bit, and releasing the clutch was choppy and the kind of "engaging" that made you get thrown back in the drivers seat away from the controls, causing an even stronger clutch release, and when being able to reach forward just enough to depress it (it was a lever-based clutch which also made using it different from what he was used to in a car) causing a stark decrease in speed again which made him bounce back and forth and up an down multiple times before being able to smoothly get the thing driving. A lever with a turtle icon on it made things smoother, but it was still really difficult. I think with controls of a crane like that though, it is also really difficult having to think from a particular point of orientation in which the angles might not line up with what your brain wants you to do, as moving forward can be a lever for backwards motion on the thing from where you are standing. While I don't see them anymore as much as I used to, I always thought it was funny to see as a child that when the operator was using the remote that the levers on the truck were moving as well :P .

I think so too! I remember when I learnt how to drive a forklift, excavator and wheel loader. It felt impossible in the beginning, but then with some practice it was like "Aha!" And then it felt really easy! And then some more practice before it feels natural. And that's a really neat feeling 😃
Cassie, Cassie. How many hours of footage did you cut? You knocked over a wall, you smashed a drain or some other hatch with can. I'm kidding. Sorry. I have never seen anything like this done in any of your videos. With driver-crane operator behind you and the crowd walking around you, you did a great job. It indeed is! First time I got to try a crane it felt easy after just 30 minutes, but that was doing the same move, craning off some planting soil from the truck to the ground. It's a shame the driver only let me use the crane on my last day there tho, haha. Here it all felt new again, and with lots of different movement patterns
Its better, you stick to driving, which you are really good at. We don't want any of the packages get destroyed while loading and unloading. Leave the crane job for the professionals.
