The Cars were one of the real leaders of what was to come in pop music for the 80s. Really hard to explain to another generation just how important they were, but if you lived it, you know.

The Cars were greatly affected by MTV. Their first two albums were real rockers and balanced out songs by Ric and Benjamin well. Once MTV hit, the songs became more techno and Ric Ocasek became the face of the Cars. They recorded some great music later but their early music was their best. I always enjoyed Benjamin Orr’s songs more.
@showtime4243
@showtime4243 2 года назад
Great point ! There were lots of bands that had their music influenced by the popularity of MTV and went a little more pop…Van Halen, Cheap Trick, Def Leppard, Billy Squier to name a few. All those groups still produced great songs but the earlier stuff was a little more on the rock side…
@chrisa4695

Ric wrote nearly all the songs himself. He gave some to Benjamin to sing. I free that Benjamin had the better voice but they are so similar, it’s hard for me to distinguish them with the aid of video or liner notes.

Pure New Wave. I would love to see you guys react to Moving in Stereo and let it lead right into All Mixed Up. Every song on this album led into the next. A neat little thing several artists did on their albums back in the day. It would tie the whole record together and make it really feel like you were on a journey listening to it. Those two songs in particular, there’s just something about the connection that makes it really special.

Dancing in the kitchen , Jumping from a swinging rope into the water. All listening to the Cars . So many fun memories but cancer and car wrecks took some of us away way too young. Ah new wave! New wave was a unique mixture of artsy punk rock, dance pop music, synthesizers heavy, quirkiness, etc . The Cars were one of the early groups of this genre (late '70s) along with Devo, Talking Heads, Missing Persons, Berlin, Elvis Costello and The Attractions, Duran Duran, U2, B-52s, Blondie, The Police, The Cure, Pychedelic Furs, The Boomtown Rats, Split Enz, Sioxsee and The Banshees, Gary Numan, Killing Joke, Joy Division/New Order, Ultravox, etc Check out more of these groups. These were popular during the late '70s, '80s, and a little bit into the early '90s. Modern "new wave" groups (mostly called post-punk/dance-punk now) would be The Killers, Interpol, Metric, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Santigold, The Strokes, , Arcade Fire, Franz Ferdinand, Bloc Party, etc. Yall need to check them out, too. We loved new wave back when I was a kid during the '80s. Figured Brad will like The Cars (they were one of Weezer's heavy influences) . We already knew Amber loves new wave music. lol. Yall like this?? Check out some more Romeo Void, Missing Persons, early Berlin, early u2, Elvis Costello and The Attractions, The Waitresses, Altered Images, Devo, Gang of Four, X-Ray Spex, Talking Heads, etc! Early new wave, post-punk stuff.

It's probably impossible to explain how cool, amazing and unique The Cars were when they broke out nationally in 1978. They were among the true pioneers of the "New Wave" sound. Power Pop with Keyboard, mysterious and a little quirky. The Cars first two albums, the self titled LP The Cars and Candy-O are flawless IMHO. You really have to hear the entire albums to get the vibe, as songs often lead into each other. Those albums were Produced by Roy Thomas Baker who famously Produced five records for Queen (including A Night at The Opera featuring the anthemic "Bohemian Rhapsody") and for numerous other artists including Foreigner, Journey, Nazareth and Alice Cooper, etc.

We would view the Cars as the new wave, punk versions of The Beatles 😆. Yall need to watch more of their videos. So many of them. They are Rock and Roll Hall of famers, too. This was the intro to New Wave....a calmer more acceptable form of punk but none the less impactful...pop and rock music went in a totally different direction in part to the contribution of The Cars. This song and album came out in 1978 in the middle of the Disco hey day and radio air wave domination...it was the indication of the next big thing coming ....keep going down this rabbit hole with The Cars!!

This was the beginning of New Wave music, danceable party rock. Late 70s. I was a freshman in college heading out to the bar that served dopes like us. The cover was a dollar and you got 4 beers. That bar was closed shortly.

Welcome aboard! One of my top 5 favorite bands. Seeing The Cars, live in concert was a dream come true, for me. The Cars have so many great songs in their catalog.

I really like that you guys are really starting to "find your groove" (not the music, you always had that!) in front of the camera! Like a comfortable friend, you definitely a positive force in a tumultuous world! Keep up the great work!

We listened to The Cars on our away volleyball game trips on the school bus! We lived very very rural so they were like 3-4hr trips one way! All we needed was someone to have ONE big boom box! 👍🏻🥰💜 LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL!! 😊

I'm not sure if "mellow" is exactly what The Cars had in mind when they recorded this.

gonna have to add "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" to your movie night... the song "Moving in Stereo" from the Cars has one of the most iconic teen age boys fantasy scenes of the 80's, that is still with us 40+ years later

This was off of their first album...and they just kept getting better with each album. Both lead singers have passed away now. RIP Benjamin Orr & Ric Ocasek.

The Cars blew onto the scene in the late 70's and they were from my hometown of Boston, so it was exciting to see them do so well. I would definitely check out Bye Bye Love, my favorite of their songs, but also Let's Go -- a fantastic song, or Candy-O, which is a little different and kind of cool.

The Cars were so innovative. Every guy in the band were so good on their instruments and the blend on every song they recorded was intricate but gelled so well. Thankfully you help keep their memory alive.

I will never forget the first time I heard this song. 1978, at the county fair in Grass Valley, California. It was after dark, and I got on the 'parachute' ride with a friend. The opening few seconds of the song started (on a REALLY loud outdoor sound system) then the ride started going around. As the song reached its first crescendo, the ride tilted up on one side. It spun for a while, then it slowed, and started turning backwards... then the song ended, the ride stopped, and we thought it was over-- but no! The song and the ride took a second spin for free! It was a friggin' blast at age the age of 14... After hearing the song twice in a row, I knew this song would be loved by millions all over the world. Since that time, this tune (and The Cars) have become legendary.

I entered High School with this song, and stuck with THE CARS ever since. So much more to explore... ...but get on YEAR OF THE CAT by AL STEWART first; it's more melodic and has more instrumentation. You'll love it.

One the great new wave bands that came out of the late ‘70’s. Try to see the video for “Let’s Go”. A obviously very stoned bassist, the late Benjamin Orr (RIP), sings lead vocals. Unforgettable….

Ric Ocasek was the lead singer on this one and few other tracks while Benjamin Orr was the main lead vocalist. Their synth was kinda their signature sound. They did a few tracks back to back. Moving in Stereo and All Mixed up are a fabulous listen from their first album

I'll never forget hearing this on the radio when I was like 9yo and thinking the hippy thing is over. Went and bought the album at K-MART with my pop bottle money. And yeah, I had to stop and peek at the Queen album News Of The World to give myself a scare! 😂

Back in 78, I got the 45 of Just What I Needed. I'm in Touch was the b-side. Kinda introduced me to alternative music. Not as out there as " shoo-be-doo", but not a typical song by any stretch. As a 9 year old, I was intrigued
