When the Yardbirds ended, they had some contractual obligations to play some gigs. Jimmy Page, the last Yardbird standing recruited three new band members to fulfill those obligations. Their first gigs were as The New Yardbirds. We know them today as Led Zeppelin.

My favorite Yardbirds song! Jeff Beck's guitar riff on this one was an innovative sound for its time. From Wikipedia: The Yardbirds first recorded the song with an Indian sitar player performing the distinctive instrumental figures. However, the group were dissatisfied with the results, so Beck developed the part on electric guitar to emulate the sitar. Beck's use of a fuzz box has also been cited as perhaps the first significant use of the effect. Also, lost in the deserved admiration for the lead guitar is the excellent acoustic guitar work by Chris Dreja that really lays the foundation for this track.
@thefoss5387

The lead singer for all the Yardbirds hits was Keith Relf, a guy who died from electrocution from an improperly grounded guitar at age 33. Relf was also a harmonica player, who sang despite having life long lung problems. Beck is on lead for this song, Clapton having moved on after the song For Your Love. Page was, initially, asked to replace Clapton, but, turned it down to remain a session guitarist, at that time.

The last recording he did was with the band Armageddon and their self titled debut album in 1975. A really good album. The band included drummer Bobby Caldwell, former of the awesome group Captain Beyond(their debut album is a cult classic, with vocals from mark one Deep Purple singer, Rod Evans).

Jeff Beck was the guitarist who everyone tried to figure out how he made his guitar sound like that on all their singles. Keith Relf was the singer. Clapton left when For Your Love was released. Jimmy joined as as bass player and switched to guitar when Jeff left. Jeff & Jimmy only recorded 2 songs together. "Stroll On" & "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago". Which with Heart Full Of Soul are my two favorites. I still go see them when they tour. Met the drummer. Nice guy.

Eric Clapton was the first of the great Yardbirds guitarists. He was getting further into the blues and left the group when they recorded "For Your Love" which was too pop oriented for him. Jeff Beck came in to replace Clapton on lead guitar. Beck played on many of the Yardbirds' groundbreaking psychedelic songs. Beck is the lead guitarist on "Heart Full Of Soul." Beck was friends with Jimmy Page. Beck brought Page into the band, initially (I think) to play bass. Page then moved to a second lead guitar, but then Beck left. Page started up a "New Yardbirds" band, having bought the rights to the name. He finally put together his New Yardbirds band but they instead decided to call themselves....Led Zeppelin.

Their original lead guitarist was Tony "Top" Topham, in 1963, Eric Clapton joined from 63 to 65, he suggested Jimmy Page but Page didn't want to give up his session work and suggested Jeff Beck, later after bassist Paul Samwell Smith left the band, Page joined as Bass guitarist until rhythm guitarist Chris Dreja could rehearse on the bass, Page then continued as co lead guitar until Beck left in 66 mid tour while the others four continued. He officially quit November of that year.

With 3 of the greatest guitarists of all-time, Beck, Clapton and Page, The Yardbirds were the first "supergroup" of rock. Despite being together for only 5 years, The Yardbirds is one of the most influential groups in the rock era. Their sound is heard in hard rock, heavy metal and punk rock, and still felt today. After disbanding in 1968, Page formed The New Yardbirds. This group within a year would evolve into Led Zeppelin, one of, if not the greatest rock band ever. Some of their other classics include: "Shape Of Things", "Over, Under Sideways Down", 'You're A Better Man Than I", "Still I'm Sad".

It's Jeff Beck on lead guitar on "Heart Full Of Soul" as others have stated. Next up was "Shapes Of Things". BTW: When Jeff Beck left the Yardbirds, he started his own group with Rod Stewart the lead singer! He redid "Shapes Of Things" differently with Rod Stewart singing the lyrics. Interestingly enough one of Jeff Beck's instrumentals is a song called "Beck's Bolero" and there is a live video of Beck and Jimmy Page playing the song!

Jeff Beck wantred to use the sitar on this one but they decided for the guitar version. It would have been one of the first sitar-based rock songs together with Norwegian Wood (George Harrison) and before Paint it Black (Brian Jones). The first ones that used Indian harmonies were The Kinks with See My Friends. Amber: you are nearly right: when Clapton left he wanted to bring his friend Jimi Page as a replacement but he was a very busy session guitarist, so Jeff Beck filled in. One year later Page joined as well together with Beck, when the latter left for the Jeff Beck Group (with Rod Stewart on vocals), Page took over the lead guitar spot. There is a rare recording of both of them - in the Antonioni movie "Blow up".

'shapes of things' was my favorite yardbirds song back then. one of the first songs with a so called psychedelic feel to it. we would have liked to play it in our jr. high band at the time but we did not have a guitarist that could touch that sound. so we just kept on playing house of the rising sun and all of the other easier songs that were popular at the time !

That would be Jeff Beck on guitar on Heart Full Of Soul. He replaced Clapton. You can tell how influential they were just by how many bands covered their songs. Rush cover Heart Full Of Soul. Aerosmith covered Train Kept A-Rillin' & I Ain't Got You. Rainbow covered Still I'm Sad. Johnny Lange & Johnny Winter covered Good Morning Little Schoolgirl. Jeff Healy & Rush both covered Shapes Of Things. There's others to, that's just off the top of my head. So keep going back to them, great stuff.

The Yardbirds did provide us with three guitar legends. What many do not know was one of the guitar influences for each of them was an American women - Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Y'all reacted to her once, singing Didn't it Rain at an abandoned train station in Manchester. You may not be aware Jimmy Page was in the audience for that performance. Also influenced by that show - remember it was shown on television - were Mick Jagger and John Paul Jones. The previous year, 1963, there was also a gospel and blues show in Manchester, also including Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Some guys traveling from London together for the 1963 show were Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Keith Richards, and Brian Jones. This was just a long way of saying its time to revisit Sister Rosetta Tharpe. I suggest Up Above My Head. The original recording from 1948 has her playing a resonator guitar. The guitar sounds great, but is so far back in the mix, it is difficult to appreciate. There is a live version from the television show, Gospel Time, probably around 1960, where she is using her Gibson electric. That is the one to watch. It is a short song- a little less than 3 minutes. The guitar solo, though too short at around 30 seconds, is a joy to watch. I predict, you will find yourself going back to it periodically to enjoy again and again.

Got my vote. SRT is truly the blues mother from yesteryear. So the train dock video...gritty but outstanding. Good recommendation.

This was from the album Having a Rave Up. It was the transition album for Clapton leaving and Beck officially taking over. Side 1 of the album was Beck. Side 2 were live recordings with Clapton. This is Beck playing here.

The original Yardbirds re-recorded this song in the 1990s under the name Box of Frogs with a new vocalist and new lead guitarists. The group recorded 2 albums, Box of Frogs and Strange Land. Both albums featured a lot of well-known guitarists playing lead on various tracks. Both were pretty solid lps.

An early song I heard on transistor radio as a kid. Definitely check out Shapes Of Things and Over Under Sideways Down. By the way Clapton was first and left after For Your Love because the band was getting away from blues. Jeff Beck stepped in and Jimmy Page was added on rhythm guitar when Chris Dreja moved to the bass. Jimmy Page was left all alone when the band fell apart with contract obligations. He formed The New Yardbirds which became Led Zeppelin.

Back in my college freshmen year (1974-75), a friend had this HUGE poster on his wall that looked like a family tree. It was a family tree of rock & roll. It showed how all these musician started in one band & moved on to others. It was facinating. I wonder what it would look like now? Of course, given the nature of the business, there'd be some dead ends (literally). I would love to find that poster.

Jay and Amber thank you for this song that i love. I have their greatest hits album from that time mid 60's. Other songs to check out are Over Under Sideways Down and Shapes Of Things. The singers name was Keith Relf. They formed in 1963 and only Eric Clapton out of the 3 was in the band Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck came to the band in 1965.

The Paul Butterfield Blues Band here in the States released a groundbreaking album in 1965 and followed it up with their East-West album in 1966 that showcased some great songs featuring Mike Bloomfield and Elvin Bishop on guitar. I’m amazed that nobody picks up on this important group that heavily influenced the music of the late 60’s.

Lead singer is Keith Relf. Jeff Beck introduced (invented) the sitar sound for this song.

The singer is Keith Relf. He died tragically in 1976 from electric shock while playing a guitar at home. The rhythm guitarist is Chris Dreja, who is still around, but retired. Drummer Jim McCarty leads a revised Yardbirds group nowadays. They had a couple of bass players (this is Paul Samwell-Smith here) and they went through the guitarists in this order 1) Anthony Topham, who leaves after the first album 2) Clapton, who had been in John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, which was a popular large collaboration of pure blues musicians. 3) Beck. As mentioned elsewhere, when Clapton left to form Cream, Dreja and Relf tried to recruit Page, but he passed. So Beck finished out the album they had been recording with Claption, did another, and then left himself. 4) Page. With Beck gone, the band was on the verge of dissolving, but they finally convinced Page to join. That lasted for one album and one tour and then they broke up for a good long time. When Clapton left the Bluesbreakers (who were never a formally organized group, more like Mayall and whoever wanted to play with him) his lead role was taken by Peter Green. This would be a very significant moment in Rock History…but not for you, because you act as though Fleetwood Mac did not exist until Stevie Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham. Sigh. (I watched "Winning Time" episode 1.06 last night. When suddenly they started playing "Prove Your Love" on the soundtrack, I nearly went into shock, because that's a REALLY deep Fleetwood Mac cut that I adore. Never thought I would hear it on a soundtrack.) Anyhow, keep enjoying the Yardbirds. They're a great group. (John Mayall is still with us, at age 89. It is estimated that in the mid-1960s alone, he fronted over 100 different Bluesbreaker lineups. Mick Taylor, the Rolling Stones guitarist, was also a Bluesbreaker, as was Aynsley Dunbar, the drummer who played with Frank Zappa and David Bowie before founding Journey and then joining Jefferson Starship.)

Rave Up was one of the first rock and roll albums I owned. I one it in a drawing from a local LA radio station KFWB. That was 1965. Decades later have this perfect recording on CD and it still sounds still just as good.

The Yardbirds is a true “ground-zero” band. Along with The Animals and The Beatles, they created the template for converting old blues standards to up-tempo rock ‘n’ roll. As with several other bands, the membership changed quite a bit. None of the guitar names sang lead vocals.

Clapton left in 1965, going on to join John Mayall's Bluesbreakers because he wanted to stay blues-based. Beck took over the lead guitar parts. Later they asked Jimmy Page to step in to play bass for them. When Beck left, Page took over as guitarist.
