Trower was gone by the time of Whiter Shade of Pale (as you probably knoww), but I'll bring up another more distant connection... when Jordan recently asked for songs with more cowbell (!) I suggested Procol Harum's "Whiskey Train". Which has so much cowbelll it's overwhelming. BUT also is some of the most burning Trower of anything he did with Procol Harum. So I'm using your comment as an excuse to bring it up again!

To us old folks, it's weird you happened to hear SRV first.... Trower was well established before SRV came on the scene. You should do "For Earth Below" -- it's instrumental, but another absolutely exquisite, slow griding magic spell of guitar. Others have suggested "Too Rolling Stoned" and "Day of The Eagle" -- show you a more lit side, if you'd rather. Can't go wrong with any of the suggestions in these comments.

Robin "Trower Power" is so underrated even though he's still cranking hard today in his 70s. He doesn't sing on this album except for some backing vocals; the heavy lifting was his bassist, James Dewar (RIP). His catalog is large and excellent, so be sure to go back to it often.

The Bridge of Sighs crosses a canal in Venice. It connects the building where the trials were held to the prison building and was named for the sighs of the prisoners seeing their last view of Venice from the bridge.

I looked up what Robin said about this song and love it even more now.... This was inspired by the famous Ponte de Sospiri bridge in Venice, also known as the "Bridge of Sighs." The bridge got its name in the 17th century, when prisoners who passed through it on their way to the prison cells on the other side would most likely see the beautiful sight of the lagoon and the island of San Giorgio and freedom for the last time. Trower explained: "The funny thing about the title song is that I had the opening guitar riff for about six months before I could come up with the turnaround section. I loved that opening lick so much. I was determined to make the second half just as perfect. So I waited and waited... and then it came to me. The band played it for the first time at Winterland in San Francisco and we received something like a 10 minute standing ovation. It obviously had magic."

It’s completely badass y’all saw em live. I was just a small hippy Hendrix fan kid in the 70’s and I didn’t know his name, but was one of my favorites when all the older heads would play his jams. Everyone had badass muscle cars and Harleys, and everywhere I went it smelled like weed. All the girls who babysat me had feathered hair and blue eyeshadow and were really into Heart and Fleetwood Mac. I was the kid who was watching Kung Fu, The HULK, and The Six Million Dollar Man and I loved KISS and all the heavy jams I knew.. raised on Beatles and Stones. I had to be quiet.. cause all the older heads would clown me if I talked too much. But I was takin’ notes.. and shit was intense, but our parents didn’t have a clue. I was cool though, I never told em nothing, cause I was running my own game and sneaking weed from my big brothers stash.. but not enough he could notice. I saw a cool ass biker couple come into the little burger place at the lake on a summer day in about ‘78. They drank a bunch of beer and jammed the jukebox.. they even drunk-danced together to Rossington-Collins “Don’t Misunderstand Me”.. and I had a feeling she was gonna get pregnant tonight for sure. I just knew it.. I could tell.

I’m listening to all these songs now that Denwood listed.. I gotta get some more Trower on vinyl, cause my daughter really digs em. All these songs are badass! He gets a really mello groove going, it’s hypnotic. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that even though I never got to see Robin Trower live, I was lucky enough to see SRV at a Blues Fest in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I was pretty drunk and we had some really good hash before the show, then we got up front row cause we were there really early and I think SRV only had his first single getting airplay at the time, so nobody really knew who he was yet, except my buddy who had caught him in Texas the year before. It an amazing show, and I feel totally lucky for having been there.

One of my all time favorite albums! Certainly one of the most popular blues rock albums ever. I recommend you listen to "Too Rolling Stoned" from this same album. BTW The vocals are by the late great bassist James Dewar.

One of rock's all time classic albums. Robin Trower is a master of tone and vibrato, one of the all time great guitarists. James Dewar (bass and vocals) was highly underrated, he was (R.I.P.) one of the best blues/rock lead singers. Highly suggest you do "Too Rolling Stoned" off this same album.

All reps are spot on, if you grew up in the 70, s no album collection was complete without this. The kind of album you could just put on lay back, and light up,every song is good,

You need to hear the almost 10 minute version of this song at Rockpalast . It’s Robin Trower’s best live performance and one of the greatest live performances ever.

When I was a kid in the 80's, I always knew when my Uncle was comin to visit us because this song was blaring out from the open windows of his blue metallic pumped up '67 Mustang GT....I haven't heard this tune in years, very cool that you're reacting to it....

You pronounced it right and The Bridge of Signs is in Venice, Italy. I believe it was the walk you took on the way to prison.

Thomas Cole was an American master known for painting landscapes; Robin Trower is a Brit blues master that paints soundscapes. With a Fender Strat.

The Bridge of Sighs is in Venice, Italy, and it is the small enclosed bridge that condemned prisoners walked over, to their execution. Look it up to see the picture, and think about “been a long time crossing the bridge of sighs”. I love to see you two discover the music that has meant so much to me.

Trower (like tower with an added "r") is the bomb! Even though he is his own self, he is like mixing Pink Floyd with SRV and some Joe Cocker IMO. You were Spot On bro! Keep checking out more of all the above mentioned!

That's Trow-er, like trau-wer, and James Dewar [ Dyoo-wer] had one of the most powerful and soulful deliveries of any vocalist ever. Heard this the first time as a teenager; on a big stereo in a quiet room, no distractions --- and I think I left my body for awhile :} These men were like Rock Shamans.

Yeah, there's a Bridge of Sighs (Ponte de i sospiri) in Venice, Italy. There's also a Bridge of Sighs in Oxford University, Oxford, England. Both have appeared in a lot of movies and TV shows.

Been to the one in Venice. I crossed it. Back in the old days, if you crossed it, it was for the last time. Because you were being executed! That is why it was called the Bridge of Sighs. That is what we were told anyway.

Saw his first gig with this band in the U.S. at Winterland in 74(?) In San Francisco. They were the opening act! We literally walked right up to the stage & leaned on it about 15 minutes before showtime. I was definitely blown away at what I saw. Jimi was back in a white man's body. Not one bad song on that whole first album.🤠

Yes, yes, yes. I already thumbed up before even listening and now given ya'll a hallejuah! too for one of my 70's fav bands. ❤ U both! And yes, the Bridge of Sighs was a bridge over one of Venice's canals where prisoners were taken across from their cells to be executed, a bit morbid history, but further adds another tone to think about when listening to this piece. "Too Rollinv Stoned" has similar vibe with a slight more upbeat tone, gotta DO IT!

There's another good song by Trower called "Day Of The Eagle", also, I don"t know if you've done this one or not, it's called "Too Rolling Stoned". Robin Trower is the name of the guitarist, I'm sorry, but I don't know the name of the singer.
