Pet Shop Boys are incredibly talented. They use the same techniques and instruments as other 80s band but manage to innovate and make it incredibly catchy yet deep. This is the soundtrack of my youth. "Being Boring" is another gem, multi layered, deep and melancholic. Plus, the black and white video is gorgeous.

80s techno-pop. This song dezctibes the stigma of London at the time. The east end has always been considered the more industrial/blue collar area of London. The west end is considered the more posh/ high end of London. Boys would go to the wedt end to meet girls and try to hide their east end roots. My mom always love Pet Shop Boys. I always enjoyed this song.

It feels like when you listen to 80’s music you have to watch it with the video. It was the decade of the birth of the music video and a lot of songs were constructed around the video. The music is inherently and strongly connected with the video. Like this one, Bronski Beat, New Order, Dire Straits, Culture Club, Pink Floyd, Van Halen, Pat Benatar, U2, A-Ha, ZZ top, the list is endless for this blended style of music/visuals

The song is referring to the geography on London; the West End is really wealthy, really expensive, similar to midtown Manhattan. The East End is the traditional working class end, with some of the highest poverty rates, but stong sense of community. The longest running soap opera in the UK is “EastEnders”. So the rich girls from uptown are hanging out with the boys with rough part of town, but it’s a dead end to bring them home.
@cornovii934

The 60's and 70's sound was this "wall of sound" where they would try to fill every possible frequency with a sound/instrument. New wave and modern production is more about isolation. Where sounds live in a frequency range, but are also buffered by silence so they don't interfere with eachother. PSP and this song were very influential in showing how this can work and be powerful

I graduated in 86 and went straight into the Marine Corps. This was the smash version that was actually their remake of the original which hit #1 in Belguim in 84. None of my friends got it bc they were not huge in the US & an older group (I’m sure they were still making music but it was long past their US hits). I don’t even know how I found them, maybe my babysitter, she had really eclectic music tastes. But I became single mindedly obsessed and collected their albums. It’s similar to how I watched labyrinth and become obsessed with David Bowie. He wasn’t big amongst kids at that point but I didn’t care. I thought he was so cool. I was like 8 and in love with a dude in his idk, late 40’s, early 50’s. I 100% wanted to marry the goblin king when Sarah made the mistake of ghosting him.

Listening to my favorite show, the only way to hear the best New alternative music especially in my tiny home town in Texas. My favorite dj had just come home from his yearly vacation to England with this song, which wasn't out in the states yet. He said I want you to hear this song because it's a good one but this will be the only time I'll play it because in two weeks time you'll be hearing it everywhere. Here's to you George Gimarc, you were absolutely right. And thank you for opening that door for me. Still love it.

Aaaaaaah!! the 80's will never die... so glad you guys decided to take on a trip through that long long road, is like traveling back in time and the best era for all music genres back in the day. There will never be anything like it ever again, not even close to being that good, ever and if you allow me to make a suggestion I'd say go for "Owner for a lonely heart" by YES. A very interesting fact about YES (only if you love Rush) is that this band was very influential, at least for Rush's Geddy Lee (Rush's vocals, bass and keyboards) since he attended all of their concerts in his town because the bassist of YES, Chris Squire (R.I.P.) "had a very aggressive tone," and of course that would transform in a very difficult way to play too, said Geddy Lee, can you Imagine Geddy Lee saying that about him being as good as he is? and that insprired him to play music that was not easy to play, yes, he also said that. So if you want to get to know YES, that's a good starter, then you can try "Love will find a way" Amazing song, and way underrated. So thank you for taking the time to read, if you got to this point, I tend to make extended comments always or most of the times. Greetings from Guatemala.

The voice of the choir is from the singer Helena Springs who not only sings this song but also creates with them "New Life, New Love" B-side of a single that I don't remember and that was included in the album of Alternative B-sides, it's another excellent theme from Pet Shop Boys who are really fantastic, greetings from Uruguay

Pet shop Boys had so many great tracks... "It's A Sin", "Opportunities", "What Have I Done To Deserve This?", "Heart", "Always On My Mind" (a cover of the classic), "Where The Streets Have No Name/Can't Take My Eyes Off You" (another cover, of U2 and Four Seasons songs). Also, worth checking out sometime is a group called Electronic, featuring Neil Tennant of the Pet Shop Boys, Bernard Sumner of New Order, and Johnny Marr of The Smiths, with the song "Getting Away With It".

Just wanted to say that I love Lex's seemingly out of left field comparisons that wind up making sense sometimes. You remind me of the recently deceased John Madden in that way.

East End and West End are the working class and the posh sides of London respectively. Posh girls going slumming to have a go with rough boys, perhaps. There is the wordplay on East End dead end world. East 17 did a cover on this some ten years later. Emulator E-mu II sampler in full flight providing almost every sound on this. However, the "aaa- ooo" sound for Inner City's song "Good Life" was an Ensoniq Mirage sampler.

Hopefully you and Lex will come over to London one day. Go to the WEST END and see a show at one of the theatres. Especially as Lex did theatre. Then you get a feel of the West End.

Great reaction! Pet Shop Boys are brilliant and West End Girls is such a great track! Thought Lex described it well with several of layer's, that's definitely why I also enjoy 80s synth/new wave!

Pet Shop Boys were massive in the 80's UK, I was a bit too young for them so was never onboard with their sound, I was firmly a Nirvana, Oasis, Stone Roses 90's kid.

Love this song, thanks for the vid! The first 10 seconds or so are pure magic, listening to what sounds like cars driving across wet roads at night, just the right bit of ambience to set the stage for an unforgettable song.

Absolutely ABSOLUTELY have to check out their song "Opportunities (Let's Make Lots of Money)." better still to see the music video but I know that's not always an option for reaction channels but with or without the music video you HAVE to check out that song. I think it's one of PSB's best songs, if not THE best song they've done. But that's just one man's opinion.

Synths and electronic drums (lots of MIDI back then) were a staple of dance music in the 80's. Not my thing but reminds me of high school and many good times.

This was THE song of the 80's for me - A bass line like that didn't come round again until Jamelia SUPER STAR... The only other Pet Shop Boys one I personally went crazy over was PANINARO, playing a 12 inch version endlessly - which for some odd reason also reminds of me JULES HOLLAND 12 inch boogie Woogie piano playing, Brendam Kavanagh style. (the guy who plays Boogie Woogie in railway stations and now has a massive you tube following.)
