My grandfather harvested corn in his early days one row at a time. By hand. He shucked each cob as he removed it from the stalk. He had a horse drawn wagon that he would throw each shucked cob into one at a time. The team of two horses was trained to move the wagon ahead a few feet at a time by voice command. No one had to drive the team. He stored the corn, cob and all, in wire sided cribs where it eventually dried. He fed the corn to his pigs on the cob.

Thanks for another great video Chet. It was interesting and enjoyable. Busy busy time with corn harvest. Corn is always a busy time. Your field operation is well organized and works very well in coordination with the trucks. Great job from the Larson crew. My compliments gentlemen. What was that Chet that you ran through the combine????! Almost hit the mail Jeep i guess. Oh my. Turn your lights on in the field gentlemen. To dangerous at night without the lights. Oh my. About it I guess. Thanks for everything Chet. You all take care and be safe. Thanks. The Iowa Farm Boy. Steve

Chet, when we farmed from 1973 to 1993 we started with a Uni Harvester with 2 rows then moved to an IH 503 with 4 rows. We thought we were really something! A neighbor bought a 8 row cornhead and then we knew what Deluxe meant! Time moves on! Have a great Harvest 2023! 🚜🚜

I grew up that we used a 1 row pull type and mounted 2 row with open cab tractors. A 20 acre field with the 2 row mounted would take a good 3 days sometimes more. The mounted was used to open fields than sometimes both would than get going. The gravity box hauler would get the work out trying to catch them and not let the sit. We didn't have to far to get to the corn crib but that was still how we did it up until 2012

We had i believe was a 3 row picker that mounted on to our IH Super M with little red wooden wagon and little galvinized wagon to fill our corn crib. When that got full we used snow fence to make a big circle and filled that up. But some we made silage and we grind feed every Sunday with the picked ear corn. Not sure if we ever hauled corn to town. Beans we hired out and took to town. This was mid 80”s. Smaller family farm. Prob 360-400 acres. Over half was pasture.

Looked at records from the farm from 1969 in northern Michigan and it stated record harvest of 77 bushels of corn. Granted we have sandy ground around here. Average corn harvest now is around 140 bushels per acre. So the seed and other advancements have doubled the crop. 😊.

I remember back when the farmers had one row corn pickers. My grandfather and his brother bought a 2 row Oliver picker that mounted on a tractor. They probably only picked 40 acres of corn on a 240 acre farm. They chopped some corn for silage. The corn was grown to feed cows, pigs and chickens. They would take a pickup truck loaded with ear corn and oats to a feed mill to be ground into feed. The corn for cow feed was unloaded into a sheller to remove the cobs then ground with oats and things like molasses and salt were added. Pig feed was ground up cobs and all. Chickens were fed cracked corn.

I watch A LOT of farmers & every single one plays the light game. It is kinda scary. Last year Brian(Brian’s farming Videos) combined a deer last year & he could see at the time. I’m SO glad he gave us fair warning bc he did show it briefly at the end of the video. I didn’t stick around to see it. That deer had to be deaf or a very hard sleeper.
