So, there's a Wizards Reboot... 

11:16 the Wizards creator Todd J Greenwald did make a statement on his Instagram story, the day before David and Selena announced the reboot. It said that he and the other original writers are NOT involved with this. I forgot what else he said, but he didn’t see too happy about this. (I completely get why, Wizards had such a specific humor and vibe that I don’t think the Raven’s Home writers will get right). and ooo a cameo from me🤭

Idk Justin eventually becoming disenchanted by all the wizard stuff after essentially being thrust into the role of CEO of the Wizarding World at such a young age and isolated from his family seems pretty in character for him.

i think bridgette mendler coming out of acting hiatus for this would be the bestest thing to happen for this series.

I want them to continuously refer to Dan benson’s character as an accountant and it’s played for laughs all of season one and eventually have him show up in season two and the running gag is everyone knows what he does but no one wants to say it in front of the kids but that may be too much for Disney.

You know It sucks that we probably will only have Alex for one episode But, I understand. Selena is very busy right now with her music, TV shows, makeup brand and a lot of things, so having her back even of it's just one episode is almost a miracle

I don't love the new premise as Justin would just be *literally* following in his father's footsteps ie giving up his powers to be able to be with his partner. But I could forgive that if they actually address how effed up the wizard competition is, the various kinds of racism in the wizarding world, and expand on the magic more in this reboot.

My opinion on what we know about the reboot: It’s not what I want it to be… it sounds kinda weird and boring. Like, let’s just remake Wizards but boring and not how the future of these kids would probably happen. My opinion on “adult” revivals: I think more adult storylines can work, but I don’t want it taken too far, for two reasons. Firstly, there are actual children that may want to know what happens next and may search it out. Secondly, I think the vibes would be off.

My take from the synopsis was that whatever incident happened at wiztech is what caused Justin to give up his power so that would mean his wife is probably magical too but i don't know maybe thats just how it sounded to me

listen, I'm hoping selena at least ends up as a recurring guest star, as much as I love Justin if he's the only returning character they might as well just make it a complete reboot with no ties to the original

I have an idea for what the incident would have entailed. Firstly, since it wasn't said in the video, as of 2022, Bridget Mendler is currently doing both a Ph.D. at MIT and also in Harvard Law School so she's definitely really busy. Since it's not going to lean into the adult angle we probably won't properly get this, but the incident would have probably had to left Justin either disgraced or disenchanted with magic, or the wound hurts too much. My idea is (since Juliet won't be coming back) Juliet was returned to normal, but that only lasted for so long. She started showing signs of aging again, maybe this time even deterioration since the magic that restored her had to have been something crazy from that fallen angel and with him gone it got used up. So Justin wanted to help her, and he tried with his new found magical upgrade and it was working well, until it didn't. Until he messed up. He inadvertently killed Juliet and swore off all magic forever, because magic was now tied to loss for him, a loss he created.

Wizards was a very ambitious sitcom for Disney Channel standards and the synopsis for the sequel pilot sounds like a reshash of the original plot of the series. Justin is in his father’s place and I guess that could make for a good commentary about sons being just like their dads, but there were better alternatives. Like, during one of David Henrie’s interviews, he mentioned a much more interesting idea for a sequel: the family being separated and we witnessing them reuniting after years apart.

Imagine if Justin appointed Max as the head of WizTech lol.

My Wizards of Waverly Place sequel series idea: Justin starts a class for wizards who lost their Family Wizard Competition to give them a second chance to compete against each other to see who deserves to be a full wizard! The 16 year old protagonist Adin (a male Alex Russo) secretly makes a Wizard Revolution behind Justin’s back, because he does not want to give up his magic again, and wants to ABOLISH the Family Wizard Competition (just like Stevie). I’d want the series to be a story-driven comedy on Disney Plus, rather than a Disney Channel sitcom.

Honestly i feel bad for Max that he barely had a chance at any character development honestly i wouldn’t mine that the wizard reboot follows Max child who goes to wiz tech that Justin having a kid where the cousin have a bromance in the show and that could lead them to be the primary wizards of there family which allows Justin to be the mentor to them in their teenage years

To be fair,Selena was probably just too expensive for Disney to be a main stay

What really makes this stand apart is that it's not just a Disney cash grab--- it's a passion project. This has been asked for by fans. It's been asked for by the actors, by the producers, by EVERYONE. And it seems like they took their time to make it happen the right way. I'm so excited for this I can't stop peeing my pants.

So Billie is probably gonna be the Justin archetype and then Roman will be Alex-esque? And then kid will be Max-esque guess? Or they'll make him super smart (like Levi from Raven's Home) but bad at magic. Then Billie can be a magic prodigy but maybe not as smart as Justin. Bonus points if the brothers are able to be closer with Billie vs each other because the family wizard contest has already clouded over their brotherhood

Justin giving up magic feels like the exact opposite of his character. Even when he admitted defeat at the wizard competition it was less about him being willing to give up magic and more about him doing the right thing by being honest. I knowing people can change but to go from "magic is who I am" to "who cares about magic I have a family" is pretty drastic.

Keyan, this is probably too soon to ask, but have you considered covering The Villains of Valley View which is funnily enough basically an amalgamation of Lab Rats, Mighty Med AND Wizards of Waverly Place or the rest of Pamela Eells O'Connell's shows Jessie and Bunk'd after The Suite Life on Deck?

In davids and jennifers podcast they talk about how disney fired peter who was responsible for keeping the show good, and they kinda shit talk about how disney ended it with 4 season and the alex vs alex. Jennifer and David asked peter when he was guest on podcast and he told them how he would have ended it. They all seem to care vey much about the original concept of the show in first 3 seasons

I imagine Justin will take on a remix of Jerry's role where he'll be more loose to emulate his own dynamic with Alex, since he realizes how it helped him grow as a wizard

I'm excited but if we are only focusing on Justin idk how I feel about it in all honesty!! I just think Justin isn't a good enough character to stand alone, and that's because him and Alex are co-leads, while I like Justin it's just hard to imagine having to just deal with him. I'm guessing this Billy character is our Alex replacement in all honesty. I'm very scared that the writers are the same ones from Ravens Home since that show is just a major hit or miss but I just wish they could've gotten the OG characters back. When it comes to Justin, him giving up his powers kinda make sense to me, and that's only because he was dragged into a role at a very young age, while Crumbs did it for hundreds of years and Justin got stuck in that role which seems pretty lonely. I'm just sad that Selena will only be a guest star and even though the idea seems interesting overall it's kinda sad that most of the other characters will probably be only one off appearances. I think it'll also be interesting to see his kids find out they have magic if they didn't know and then how that rivalry or something will work between them and the Billy character.

My guess they don't have the budget to bring Selena back as the main or recurring character. Alternatively, there is a serious us scheduling issue that blocks her from returning

6:27 I'd love it if they made it so that the old show is an alternate timeline where Justin and Juliet became endgame and in this timeline, Justin declined getting his powers back leading to the events of the revival! Justin never becomes a professor and the dumb Stevie storyline never happens but becomes a plot point later down the line. This way, that storyline gets an easy fix, the revival can do anything they want AND we get a storyline where the characters travel to different timelines!

I think it might work if that magic incident was caused by Alex and/or Max (maybe trying to get him powers as well because he grew up and figured it was never fair competition for him as the youngest and his life just turn into mess?) And Justin as always takes responsibility for his siblings actions but also his reasoning for giving up powers could be finally seeing how corrupt and sick that system was (Ekhm.... Stevie was right or something...) Oh and that mysterious kid? Is Stevie's - Justin takes care of her because of guilt (maybe her dad and Stevie tried to start another rebellion and Justin put them in prison?) and she's like Alex while his sons are basically little Justin and Max. Also about Juliet - i feel like it was never really meant to be, just like Alex and Mason (who in later seasons just acted kinda obssesive) and as Justin grew up he realized that she's hundreds years old! But they are still friends tho and she might show up as a special guest. i think the "adult thing" they should do is adressing some issues in system but i doubt they'd do 😅 So anyway that's my pitch😂 i might have other ideas as well

Having previously being able to watch projects start up pre-prod writers rooms and such with a company that Disney and every studio works with, it's extremely likely "Wizards" is the development title and we'll see the final title chosen later.

given that it is the Raven's Home creators behind this, I wouldn't be surprised if Roman the older kid has been hiding from his dad that he has magical powers and justin has hid from his kids that he is a wizard hoping they wouldn't get powers or whatever, and when this wizard kid arrives basically the truth comes out. I say that because the premise of Raven's home (in the first seasons) is one of her kids hiding his psychic powers from her and viceversa I could see them reusing that premise for the pilot of Wizards.

i just don’t understand why anyone is excited for reboots. even if one turns out okay, just watch the old one? i know nothing will replace the magic (lol) of seeing it for the first time when you’re young and impressionable, but that’s part of growing up. the track record has been pretty bad for reboots/remakes and i just can’t find myself excited about something that feels so soulless and cash-grabby.

Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas have a decent catalog, Randy Cunningham and Best Friends Whenever, so they’ll probably do it justice.

The setting is something I want to know. Will it be at the sandwich shop and apartment, or a brand new location? Justin having a non-magic life means a non-magic job, which is unlikely to be the sub shop as Max has the business passed down to him. Jerry and Teresa retiring would be the perfect explanation for having them appear when David and Maria are available, maybe Jerry has a lesson for Justin about being a teacher or Teresa wants to have fun with her grandsons.

THEORY: Maybe the incident at WizTech had something to do with Juliet. Maybe something set her off & she turned some of the students into vampires or drank their blood or something. It could be a good way to explain why Juliet and Justin are no longer together & why Justin felt the need to leave WizTech & his magical past behind. I know that it's out of character for Juliet but perhaps she was being tricked or controlled as a part of a villain plot that would be revealed-- maybe the villain that Alex dated during the original WizTech episodes came back and has a role in it and will be a villain the show. I know that PROBABLY this is VERY UNLIKELY... but I like the idea of it in my head even if in the show itself Juliet will probably not be mentioned at all

I think it’s a huge L that it sounds like Selena won’t be involved very much…. I don’t think it’ll have enough of the original cast and what made the show so good (Alex…) for the old time fans and it will be too much nostalgia bait for new, younger fans. It is almost impossible for these kinds of shows to find their footing if they try to do both. I’ll give it a try with the new kids, but the original fans are all adults and don’t want to watch a kid show with just some actors that they recognize in the background every once and a while. My hopes unfortunately aren’t too high ☹️

Do we know if he gave up his powers for his wife or could the "incident" be something like he got fired somehow and instead of losing his healtcare he lost his magic. Equally tragic hsvdhshsjsjs. Tbh I hope it's the second thing and it was like, maybe someone sabatoged him or some sht happened and they ruthlessly take away his magic just because he doesnt have a wizard job (and as someone who didn’t win the competition, can't fall back on it so lets say, he could only get his magic given back if he got steady access to wizard work) but maybe his reputation was destroyed by the incident so instead of trying to fix it or clear it up he just gives up and focuses on his family for a while, tho could have a potential ability to get it back. Or maybe like, even if that is how it happened he could have married a human after he lost his powers and couldn't get them back due to work related reputation or other wiztech issues, and then in deciding to marry a human that would be him cementing his choice, rather than it being a 1:1 same thing as his dad. I think that woild be a super interestimg way for them to have him end up like Jerry if they wanted him to, while still making it interesting and unique how he got there. And, even leave a tiny bit of room for him to get his powers back as like a big pivotal moment for a later season or episode. I think that would be really cool. Also I agree with your guys' ideas that after pointing out how seriously messed up the wozard government is, having an arc where some of the character change or overthrow it would be a really interesting plot direction (with Stevie yeah!).

I'm going to agree with the others, this is very in character for Justin but I would prefer to have Alex. She was my favorite growing up and made the story interesting. Sad we don't get Juliet after everything they went through. Hope Alex at least mentions Mason, even if its just a wolf symbol on a piece of jewelry or a comment in passing, I loved them so much.

The original series briefly touched on gender swap magic, but in this age I wonder if they would ever touch that, I mean trans wizards, how would that work? Could be cool to explore.

Justin's core is presumably connected to WizTech, it's the only reason he can do magic - so if there was an accident and he resigns, I would assume he would lose his power. Story could be about them trying to solve that issue? Outside new kids obviously being the main protags, who take the spotlight. Tbh, I don't really care that much about that part - they had to go with something and I feel like they either had to make both parents magical or non-magical, for this to work with the law lore. But I guess that could also be a plot point in the story to be solved. I am however concerned this could end up as a reboot. Those kids strike me as generic, so I hope they get proper personalities and characteristics that make them unique and they won't be just copies of Alex, Justin and Max. Tbh i think there is potential, but the more i think about it the more i mourn for all of the interesting alternate reboots we could have had. Like maybe not Alex and Justin co running wiz tech, but instead Alex needing some extra cash to afford her bills (like to imagine her sharing an apartment with harper in nyc or smth and its crazy expensive). She could decide to use her fame from saving the world several times to apply as a guest lecturer at wiztech for the year (like one of those alternate schools you can take classes at in hs). I imagine Justin initially wants to say no ( bc potential choas and still kinda being jealous that he didnt get to save the world) but is talked into it by the rest of the staff. So i imagine alex taking students on magic school bus thpe antics and Justin having to deal with the choas while keeping the school running. I imagine harper being a yter/tik toker in the vain of that one girl who makes those "making a dress entirely out of loofahs/making oufits from popular movies". Like tell me you cant imagine her doing similar funny rambles while making crazy outfits. Plus i think there a funny plots to be had about those two basically leading similar lives in two different worlds. Alex is somewhat famous in the wizarding world and a nobody in the human world. But, its the opposite for harper. You could have some shenanigans where the two worlds collide or they struggle to connect in the other worlds. Like Alex not being able to be honest about her life with humans or harper basically breaking the law everytime she interacts with magic. Thats not even mentioning the possible love triangles that can result from living in two worlds or the inherit stakes of losing your magic at play now that theyre fully grown. My ideal reboot would actually focus on the adults though so it definitely would never happen. (I really dont think they need to make the show explicit to be aimed at adults but so many ppl have very chilidish views of adulthood so we get nothing ig).

Part of me could understand Justin giving up magic if the "Incident" that led to it was just Justin hitting some next level gifted kid burn out. Like spent all his life propped up as the good sibling with the most expectations, got promoted to one of the most important roles in the Wizarding World at like 18 and then had to just keep it up. Like 3 years in he just snapped, his relationship crashed and burned and he completely left it all behind if he even made it that far

Gary Marsh was the longtime president of Disney Channel…my understanding is he wasn’t directly involved on a creative level, but he’s the one who would green light everything (he’s mentioned in passing in that infamous Debby Ryan clip about her “making history”). He’s no longer president, although he’s still involved in an executive role elsewhere with Disney. I’m not surprised Selena isn’t much more than a guest star (we’ll see how things pan out if it gets picked up beyond the pilot). She’s still working on music, and is committed to Only Murders in the Building in a lead role. The original creators/writers, like Todd and especially Peter, not being involved, is concerning, especially since the show was so different tonally when Peter left. But given David and Selena have clearly given this a lot of thought, I’m hoping it works out. And it’s good news for the potential future of Mr. Nostalgia’s Disney Channel Multiverse either way, given the ominous message in his video about the cancellation of Bunk’d.

I might check out the Wizards reboot, I watched a couple of seasons of Raven's Home, then I stopped, I tried to get back into it for the later seasons, and I watched a little bit of Season 5 on Disney+ but I just couldn't get back into it. Hopefully, I have better luck with the new Wizards show. 🙂
