Dusty was my auntie Mary Her real name was Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien, befor she became famous she worked in a department store called Bentall's she was known back then in England as the first white lady of soul. I am going to be completely biased and agree :) and say rest in peace auntie May x

Hello Peter, even though you did not have much part in her success, you can be really proud to have had this jewel as your aunt! I lived in London beginning of the sixties through to mid-sixties and she was my absolute favorite at that time together with Cilla Black! She really moved us back then and I listend to her sooo much, all her songs. Very fond and nostalgic memories of my youth! ❤

Hi Peter, Was on a visit to County Clare in the west of Ireland some years after Dusty sadly passed. My cousin told me that her ashes were scattered in a beautiful cove on this Atlantic coast. She showed me a Dolphin who appeared soon thereafter and returns every year. The locals called the Dolphin 'Dusty'. Can you confirm this...or is it just an Irish yarn?

This lady is so important in British black culture. In the 60's she fought like a tigress to get black artists on music shows and really woke up young people with the Motown sound. It took off huge in the UK and Motown is probably the most famous record label here still. This saved so many Black Artists as their careers died in the USA. Many came over to Britain and the Northern Soul and Soul scenes gave them a decent living. Sadly she struggled with anxiety and disappeared until the Pet Shop Boys kicked her back into the charts with their duet, her songs on the Scandal soundtrack and a new solo album
@DAS1962
@DAS1962 Год назад
I agree BUT Dusty was important to British Culture full stop. The Dusty In Memphis is consistently ranked as one of the great albums of the last 60 years. Ironically, whilst you say she was important to British black culture, the reverse was the case in the US where she ws discriminated against for sounding soulful. Hence the double with her and Dionne Warwick on certainn songs.

This song is VERY special to me because I used to sing it to my late husband, Jon, because his Dad was an ordained preacher & Jon was the only man to ever love me so totally & beautifully like he did. We were college sweethearts & were parted for 17 years, married other people, his wife died & my marriage to my Minnesota Yankee died, & we were finally married 9-2-06. I was 38 & he was 40. 10 months after our wedding, our now 16 year old son was born. We were married til COVID-19 took him from us on 11-15-20.

Dusty was a huge recording artist in the 1960s. She is from England. She has so much soul in her voice, and this song is almost like a 60s Motown Song, because of the way it sounds. Dusty was not a "One Hit Wonder," by any means. She won a few Grammy Awards, and is still today, considered one of the greatest "female" vocalists ever. Another great artist from England. Thank You Guys

England's home grown talent. A legend here in the UK, but one who didn't move to the US (like others did) when she cracked it, instead just worked there and in London but lived in the countryside in England. Another English artist who cracked the US big time in the 60s but was a lovely humble person in real-life. RIP Dusty, singing with the angles now, gone too soon.

Pure Memphis soul music sung by a British pop star... originally intended for Aretha Franklin who passed it up at first (too blasphemous) but later did her own version of it... this song is near perfect, a real iconic 60's tune. Memphis produced such great music back then.

From Songfacts: "The backup vocals were by a female group called the Sweet Inspirations, who were made up of Cissy Houston, Sylvia Shemwell, Myrna Smith and Estelle Brown. They were the sought-after female backup vocalists in the New York area, having performed on albums by Aretha Franklin, Wilson Picket, Van Morrison and many others. With four singers, they could create a rich, soulful sound that suited this song perfectly. Later in 1969, the Sweet Inspirations went to work for Elvis Presley, touring and recording with him. Cissy Houston left the group at this time so she could spend more time with her children, including her young daughter, Whitney Houston."

This song was first offered to Aretha in 1967, but her father was a Baptist preacher, and she felt that a song about a girl messing around with a preacher’s son was too dirty. Aretha’s manager knew Dusty’s manager, and he thought Dusty had the perfect soulful voice for this song. Dusty had a massive hit with it, and Aretha realized she had made a big mistake when she heard how great the song was performed by someone as great as Dusty, so she then recorded her own version of it. Aretha’s version was also a hit, although not as big of a hit as Dusty’s was (probably because the public already associated it with Dusty). Aretha’s version is a little different, and she sings the lyrics with a different rhythm in her voice. When Dusty heard Aretha’s version she wished she had sung it like Aretha did, so from then on she did it Aretha’s way when she performed it.

Dusty Springfield is one of the great voices from the 60s and has long been a favorite of mine. Her song "Wishin' and Hopin" from 1964 was banned in my house because of the line "just do it and you will be his" LOL. Young, sheltered and naive, I didn't know for several years more why my Mother took exception to that! If Mom had only known, it was Dusty's soaring voice that enthralled me. Great reaction as usual. I'd like to suggest Brandi Carlisle's "The Joke" live at the 61st Grammy's for a future Female Friday.

As an R&B and funk drummer, this has been one of my favourites to play for a couple of decades - starts slow, then kicks down to that great funk shuffle with the syncopation on the ride.

I love what you said but I really don't understand it. LOL I'm not a musician whatsoever.
@awmperry
@awmperry Год назад
@Robert Longwill Well, kicking down is really a term from cars - automatic gearboxes "kick down" a gear for better acceleration when you floor it. You get to the same speed, but it feels faster. It's the same thing in this tune; the actual tempo (speed) of the song barely changes (around 5:30), but the combination of changing the key, bringing up the horn section (trumpets, trombones, saxophones) and increasing the drums makes it feel faster. Syncopation means playing a rhythm that works around, rather than with, another rhythm. If you listen to the ride cymbal (the metallic "ping" in the background), you'll hear the rhythm is far less even than one might otherwise expect. Did that help at all? It's tricky to explain things without falling back on musical jargon. :-D

Dusty added her great voice to a song by *The Pet Shop Boys* (an '80s group) called "What have I Done to Deserve This?" Though Dusty isn't in it, I suggest their song "West End Girls". If you're not familiar with Bonnie Raitt, add her to *Female Friday* and listen to her songs "Nick of Time", "I Can't Make You Love Me" and "Something to Talk About". Also, Linda Ronstadt singing "You're No Good". Her duet with Aaron Neville called "Don't Know Much" is a really good one.

Mary O'Brien (Dusty Springfield) was first with her brother, Tom (born Dionysius O'Brien) , in the British Pop-Folk group, The Springfields. Their first 60's hit was a cover of a country tune, Silver Threads and Golden Needles. Dusty's first solo hit was You Don't Have to Say You Love Me. The Australian Group, The Seekers (fronted by another female legend, Judith Durham), had their first hit, I'll Never Find Another You, given to them by the Springfields.
