There was never a band like The Cars! They were in a category all of their own, a little bit of New Wave, Punk, and Rock and Roll. For a great guitar solo you should check out Touch and Go. Other suggestions by them would be Shake it Up, It's all I Can Do, I'm Not the One, All Mixed Up, Bye Bye Love, You're All I've Got Tonight, Let's Go, and my favorite quirky one I'm in Touch with Your World.
@@jasonremy1627 yes, I literally said that word for word about Elliot on someone else's comment. His solos are amazing. Touch and Go is my go-to song If I want to hear some great Elliot soloing!
From the album "Heartbeat City". 1984 was a big year for the Cars with top 10 hits such as "Magic" "Drive" and "You Might Think". Damn good 80's rock band!
In my opinion 1984 was the best year in music history. So many many acts had their best and/or most successful album in that year. Besides The Cars, I would include Prince, Bruce Springsteen, Van Halen, The Police, Culture Club, Tina Turner, Lionel Richie, Huey Lewis & the News, Madonna, Billy Idol, and Duran Duran on that list.
Hell yes Elliot was insane on his guitars. This band was so incredible from Ric, Ben the two vocalists, Ric on rhythm guitar and Ben on Bass then Greg Hawkes on Keyboards and Synthesizer and then David Robinson on drums. I saw them in San Francisco in 1982. What a super band.
This song is a gem. Never have I thought of it as a fav by them but whenever I hear it I can’t deny how awesome it is. It’s like I have 16 #1 cars songs lol
Interesting factoid: When he sings “Summer, summer, summer” it’s an homage to The Mamas and the Papas “California Dreaming” s “I’d feel safe and warm” (if I was in L.A.), but in a major chord instead of a minor chord.
I love both Benjamin Orr and Ric Ocasek singing for The Cars, but there is just something about the tone of Ric's voice that suits the band perfectly. This song was all over radio during the summer of '84. For that reason as well as just the overall vibe, it will always epitomize summer to me.
This song is one of a handful that sends me straight back to the 80's when I was a teenager and the world was so full of possibilities. Thanks for checking it out.😊
For a completely different and hauntingly spacey Cars listen, do "Moving in Stereo/All Mixed Up" they are 2 songs in one. Listen straight through both to get the full effect. I have a feeling you both will be blown away, especially Amber ...
I love both those songs but honestly..I don't like that mix.. I wish that "Moving In Stereo" and "Just What I Needed" from the 1984 Houston tour would replace the other double. IMO :)
One of bands at the forefront of New Wave in the early early '80's. But they quickly outdistanced their contemporaries with their songwriting and melodic content. One of my very favorite songs of theirs was The Dangerous Type. And let me take a moment of respect for Benjamin Orr and Rick Ocasek. Hard to believe they're gone, and gone way too soon.
Dangerous type has always been my favorite Cars song, but for some reason it never seems to get mentioned! Thx for bringing that song up ! RIP Ben & Rick
Actually, they where a Rock Band, and then the 80's caught up them. Their first hit packed album was in 1978! Most of the songs you heard in the early 80's from them came from The Cars album from '78
Same here. I graduated in 84 here in Atl. I seen Van Halen also. Lol in 1978, 79, 84 , 86 😎. However , this song and this whole album brings back memories that I wished I could go back to for sure , we were lucky to have grown up when we did , things now are just not the same
Same here, this came out right at the beginning of summer and got a ton of airplay. Still remember building a fort in the woods with friends summer 84 and camping out there. I remember we had CandyO tape in our boombox
"Shake It Up", "Let's Go", and "Tonight She Comes" by The Cars will make you want to dance. "I'm Not the One", "Touch And Go", and "Heartbeat City" are great songs as well.
A mega hit off their Heartbeat City album, where Magic was on, was a song called Drive. Benjamin Orr sang the lead on the song. Definitely give it a listen ☺️
Ric Ocasek and Benjamin Orr were close friends and when Benjamin died their friendship was commemorated in the song "Silver", which Ocasek wrote in memory of Ben. "Since You're Gone" is a toe tapper and "Moving in Stereo" with Bejamin singing lead, is awesome, so is "Heartbeat City" and "I'm Not the One". Amber would be happy to know that the Cars did ballads: "Emotion in Motion" with Ric singing lead is a fairyland of fun. RIP Benjamin & Ric. xx
This song transports me back to my teenage years laying on the beach here in NJ . I had my Panasonic tape player and this one album . I played it probably a hundred times that summer. Great memories 💕
Fun fact, Robert John "Mutt" Lange produced this record as well as contributed backing vocals. He is also the producer on Def Leppard's Hysteria and Pyromania hence that signature background vocal sound.
@@filmsensei yes He produced "Waking Up The Neighnors" and also the song "All For Love" with Bryan. Sting and Rod Stewart. Also did the album "4" by Foreigner. Such a gifted producer and vocalist
Definitely one of the best and most unique bands of the late 70s and 80s.... they put out an album a year from 78 through 81 and finally took a break before putting out Heartbeat City in 84. This was actually the album that Mutt Lange was working on with The Cars, his first time with them and why he initially had to tell the Def Leppard boys he couldn't work on Hysteria, but with all the delays, he eventually did and what two great records they both turn out to be.
I saw these guys in the mid 80’s in Seattle. They were SO classy and their music was played at lots of events for decades. They make great videos too. Sending you love! Keep up the great work! Love your movies too.
This song is one of my "summer mix" songs. I have to hear it a few times each summer, or it just ain't summer! The Cars were one of my favorite bands when I was a pre-teen and teen for the reasons you stated...you can't put them in a box easily! They were a unique band!
I loved "Heartbeat City", the album this was from (along with "Drive" and "You Might Think", which you've also reacted to). "Hello Again" was another banger from that record. "Let's Go", however, is still my all time favorite Cars song. I hope you do that next. You've done six Cars songs, but there's a long way to go! RIP Ric Ocasek (lead singer) and Ben Orr (backup singer).
I still have this album "Heart Beat City"... freaking FANTASTIC album, not a bad song on it. "Magic" is just one of many great songs on that album. It seems just like yesterday when I first watched this video back in 84. The Cars are my 2nd favorite 80's band, only behind Duran Duran. And they are on my top 5 favorite bands of all time. The Cars were THE trend setters in the New Wave movement. I was just listing to their greatest hits compellation at the office today! They didn't technically have a lead singer... Rick Ocasec and Benjamin Orr shared vocals. Each had their own voice and each sang vocals on their biggest hits. Rick had the more raw punk kind of a voice, Ben had the more traditional radio-friendly kind of a voice that all the girls loved. Ben died in 2000, Rick died in 2019, but not before he got to preform live when the Cars were inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of fame in 2018. Rick sang vocals for songs that both he AND Ben made famous. Deep rabbit hole. Enjoy the trip. I don't know if you've reacted to Ricks other big hit from this Album, but you should react to the songs "You Might Think", and "Drive" if you haven't already. Peace!
The Cars was on the line of new wave, punk, and rock. That made them very unique! I remember auditioning for a popular band in my area for their drummer, and they gave me a list of songs to learn and the cars were on the list about 3 times! And I was a straight up hard rock guy. I played the songs great but while I was answering questions afterwards, I explained where my musical interests were and they hired a different drummer. But I love the Cars!
Welcome aboard! I was beginning my senior year in high school 1979, when I first heard The Cars, playing on the radio. The Cars, quickly became one of my top 5 favorite bands and still remain today.
I read a comment in an article once from the lead singer where some magazine labeled them 'art rock.' He said he was surprised by it. They were just creating music they enjoyed, lol.
Funny you mention Weezer.. The lead singer in this song (Ric Ocasek) was the producer on several Weezer albums. The Cars have 2 lead singers, Ric Ocasek and Benjamin Orr. Ben Orr has the "better" of the 2 voices.. He sang "Drive" "Just What I Needed", "Bye, Bye Love" and many more.. Ocasek sang "Good Times Roll" and many others. Ocasek was the primary song writer. Both Orr and Ocasek have passed away..
Notice those distinctive backing vocals from producer Mutt Lange, that you've already heard on his work with Def Leppard and Shania Twain. Judging by the online debate, even 30 years later, nobody is 100% sure how he achieves that raspy, breathy, almost synth sound to the vocals.
The walking on water thing is now something that's been done so often that nobody thinks twice about it, but this video was the first to use it. From what I remember (it's been almost 40 years), they hired a magician to build the illusion, and that may have been the first time the trick had ever been performed in that manner.
Wife here..The Cars were such a big influence and crowdpleaser of my generation ❤!!..It's really hard to explain. One of my most memorable videos of early MTV!
Man, summer of '84! Fresh outta high school working a full-time summer job. Driving around in dad's '74 Buick Le Sabre and thinking I was "all that". "Magic" was fantastic to blast on the radio😊
I wish I could have seen The New Cars in concert. Todd Rundgren did great covering Ocasek's vocals, and I love Not Tonight. It sounds just like The Cars always have.
The Cars were the kings of New Wave. Blondie, the Pretenders, DEVO, and other made valiant effort and are all great but the Cars ruled MTV from the start.
Ben Orr of the cars was my great great uncle (originally Orzechowski), and although I sadly did not get to meet him before he passed, I'm still very proud just to see all that they did, and see people finding The Cars still as well! :)
Shake It Up was their fun party song Bye Bye Love was my favorite Cars track, with their best guitar riff IMHO Moving In Stereo was their coolest, moodiest Candy-O was their punkiest techno groove Drive was their masterpiece. 😎
Please consider reacting to The Cars videos and concert footage. They are so awesome to watch live.. especially the early years. And their keyboardist. Greg Hawkes.. he's a multii-nstrumentalust and although his stake is keyboards. He implements sax, banjo and flute.I think it's a banjo and a flute . As well as any other percussion.. And they are a casserole of 5 personalities that are so Ying/Yang AND they interact with each other during performances so you get to witness their affection for each other!
You guys are exactly spot on. The Cars were unique. Nobody else sounded like The Cars. I saw them in 1984: live. To this day one of the best concerts I have ever seen. RIP their two lead singers, Ric Ocasek and Benjamin Orr, also the bassist.
Seen them back in early eighties at Arizona State University live outside in the grass by the stadium . Had about 10 people with our group Girls were on shoulders of guys and we were close enough to almost touch the stage. The guitarists were throwing their guitar picks into the audience regularly throughout the show it was great time and they put on a fantastic show
Not sure if this has been mentioned in the comments yet but the singer here (Ric Ocasek) actually produced Weezer’s first album (and one of their more recent ones from the past ten years, before his untimely passing).
Yea the 80’s was the best time to be alive young to old what an amazing 10 years it was . When it came to music it was MTV that really showcased the different styles if u was into the pop of that time or was a metal head (headbangers ball)!it was magical I miss it so much .
Mtv started in the 80s, so songs and videos were geared around watching on a short video. It was a great time to be a teenager back then. Moms likes it too lol ;)
The presence of Producer Robert John “Mutt” Lange was definitely heard on this album. The way he took an entire band and pushed all of the members to do something new and different was purely awesome. He did the same thing for Def Leppard and helped rocket them to stardom.
The Cars shot "Magic" at the Hilton family house in Beverly Hills, which Kathy Hilton had leased to the band. A plexiglass platform sat under the surface of the water. On the first take, the platform collapsed. The platform had to be adjusted to Ocasek's weight.
The Cars were a great combination of New Wave and Pop. They had two top level vocalists in Ocasek and Benjamin Orr. Both died too young. Also the 80’s videos were always trying to be special because they wanted to be noticed/different so that MTV (so important at that time) would play it.
The Cars immediately put me in a time machine, back to hockey trips in college! Thank you as always, Peace and Love! (And Amber, the hair is absolutely SMOKING!)
Reminder.. The Cars have 2 singers. The bass player Ben Orr shared lead vocal duties with the rythym guitarist Ric Ocasek who sang this song. They often had similar tone, but once you notice the differences you can pick it up.
Probably my favorite band of all time. Their first two albums were incredible; I wore the first 5 albums/tapes out. First album I played on my brand new stereo in '79 was Candy-O. They were awesome to hear in concert as well; very tight sound although they didn't really interact much with the audience (Panorama tour, with The Motels as the opener). So many great songs; if I had to go with just one, it would be "Dangerous Type"... but so many great ones to choose from.
Laps the same except for my shoes they had some Classics Right Moving in Stereo kind of oh I need you so kind of deal and drive drive oh that was a party puller Downer the job would drop the panties down hey all day jay
I think you guys should react to some of Rick Ocasec's solo hits. "Emotion in Motion" is a great song with a really quirky video. He branched out as a solo artist in the late 1980's along with Benjamin Orr. There was only one of his songs I remember called "Stay the Night" which was a good song but very underrated and fell off the radar very quickly when it was released, unlike Ocasec's songs. Either one of those two songs would be great to review. And "Drive" is a beautiful and haunting song and video and Benjamin Orr's vocal is terrific. Also, Rick Ocasec's wife, Paulina Porivoska (I just know I am spelling her last name wrong) is in the "Drive" video.
