Stud Pack, glad to see you're a REAL contractor. Pull permits when you should, make "executive decisions" on others...and that's coming from someone who has been on both sides of the law; worked for a contractor for a while and then became a building inspector, then the Building Official for the small town I lived in. I always felt I applied common sense and observed intent of the code, as well as having the quickest turn-around I could for issuance, versus strict enforcement of "The Book" and "I'll get to it when I feel like it". I had to get out of it because of the "regulatory enthusiasm" of the jurisdiction. I also love posts from contractors saying they build "to code" not understanding that "to code" is the absolute MINIMUM deemed safe. You always appear to FAR exceed code and have pride in your work. I subscribed after seeing this video, and I also agree, maybe a video series showing folks just how fun it is cutting through red tape and jumping through hoops. Keep up the great work!

It's not about people's willingness, RU-vid will actively hide videos if you don't play their game of content schedule/watch time/ad time. Removing your vids from recommendations for subs and especially none subs. They will even unsub accounts from your channel if you post irregularly. It's very stress inducing being at their mercy. On one hand I get it, on the other I see more exorcise of a bloated government. Pay them so you leave a paper trail that someone else can say you checked the boxes. It's ridiculous, but I can appreciate some codes and some practices. The downside is I've noted a declination in quality of both materials, lumber especially, and standards as I've held my line of work and it's really up to whomever is building to set that standard and anyone else just deals with what's behind that initial build. Remember kids, D is a passing grade. My own tirade: I was a locksmith for a bit and I could always tell when our competition was the one I was working behind because their work was so clean and professional I never had to guess. I'd ask to see the key and sure enough it was their name stamped on the key. My boss wanted fast profit, to the point of pushing me to lie and break locks to sell new ones. It was garbage, so I lied to him instead and carried on with proper workmanship. It showed and paid dividends as my name became a point of request for service. A lot of things I work behind now as a maintenance tech are similar. I can always tell if it was a vendor or some one in a hurry. The point I'm trying to make is just because it's legal and certified never means it's good. It just means it's passing grade...

However if someone filed a formal complaint we had to apply the letter of the law because at that point the project was now in the system. It sucks in a case like this, and I bet the inspector that had to post that took no joy in doing so.

I bought two row homes side by side in the city of Philadelphia. The party wall was leaning so on the ceiling of the second floor it was out of plumb 5-6". City refused to accept my permit. I was told "if it's an emergency, do what you need to...". I also found through a friend in the city that everyone was told to stay away and not look down that street - nothing is going on... I was also told if anything happened I would be paraded around on TV as the scourge of the city and the reason they need to crack down on fly by night contractors.... They didn't want any responsibility for approving it if something went wrong. I should also note this was after a few buildings did collapse in the city and they were under fire. It's amusing to see the difference between how it's supposed to work and how it does work... Now I will say that Philly had their little enforcement army that just wrote fines. I once saw a guy follow a box blowing down a street. If it stopped by a work in progress he'd take a picture and write a fine. I threw the box away and for the next couple of weeks would get fines when I wasn't there for debris... We kept a clean work site and cleaned around... I ruined his game for the day and he was upset... So Philly definitely looks for unlicensed projects.

However when it comes to building and safety every buyer wants to know if the renovation was permitted so that the job/work was done correctly! Yes we all know stud Pack does great work and Paul really knows what he’s doing! but Paul’s the exception to the rule of most contractors a lot of them do really terrible work, make mistakes cause huge problems and especially in bathrooms they have to be torn down! Stud Pack should have no problem getting passed on all of the requirements at least he hasn’t button it up with drywall “so the city inspectors can see the work that he’s done which is 100% correct! And when the owner decides to sell that unit he’ll have an easier time selling it because the buyer could have confidence that it was done right because it was permitted! and it went through all the inspection process! I bought a house in Rural Utah original structure was in 1909 with an addition added between 1955 - 1975 there was no building and safety for the county I live in. All of the homes built and all of the additions up to 1993 in this area we’re not permitted and half of them were done incorrectly and poorly. My addition added to the back of my house it wasn’t all done correctly! One of 2” x 8” x 9’ bathroom Floor joists had a 6“ x 1 1/2“ cut out at the bottom of the joist, it weakened the joist and caused the joist to sag at that point because they installed a 4” cast iron septic pipe in for the toilet above. I had to rip out that joist and do a lot of work to strengthen the floor above with blocking in between the Joists! the septic pipe system had been permitted! If they had a Building and Safety Department and the builder applied for a permit the inspector would’ve seen the 6” x 1.5” material removed from the joists and insisted that they tear it out and install a new Joist and instruct them how much material they can cut out of the joist legally which is no more than 1/3 of the height! With that said all the windows in this addition did not have a jackstad which is 100% illegal! I only discovered this because I removed all the cedar siding removing and the 7/16 fiber board and I’ll be installing 7/16 Zip Sheating in its place. I discovered that the windows window framing was done completely wrong! And there’s a second story above the first story which is attic space and all of that weight is pressing down on the incorrect framing I’m just lucky that it didn’t cave-in because there’s no jack studs supporting the horizontal window framing that were used for framing in the ALL the windows. I’m going to have to build a support wall in front of every window and completely remove the window framing and redo it properly and yes I know how to do it.

I had attic work done a few times and they always just stick their head in the attic and look around (even though they can not see the work that was completed), then they sign off the paperwork. @phoenixfireclusterbomb

I agree, common sense is lacking in every aspect of life especially, in government and corporations being operated by an algorithm. They say A.I. will replace management. Algorithms created by humans while humans oversee the process can’t even use common sense and override the system. Yet, we are going to allow an A.I. to oversee our future governments and institutions. You gotta be kidding me! Nobody, with an actively thinking brain, that can produce a constructive thought, would even dare to allow such a system to takeover humanity. I can only imagine the injustices that will be rendered by a system especially, when we as humans can’t even utilize common sense ourselves and override our current systems of governance. Who do you think wrote the foundational algorithms that creates an A.I.? What makes anyone think that common sense will suddenly and magically be a part of the internal brain of the A.I. when we don’t practice common sense ourselves? The only thing that’ll fix our future is to discard our current ideals of the future. We have to start educating our children to constructively think. Those whom are given powers over our systems have got to be ethical and practice morality. Computers have to be utilized as a tool to organize information not to program the manager. Computer technology was supposed to bring about a society that could work less, not remove an x amount of jobs and hand those responsibilities over to one person with a computer. It seriously has become one of the worst tools we’ve integrated into our system of governance. People have stopped using there God given abilities to think and recall information on there own. The rules and regulations have become so complex because of technology that a human being cannot even physically manipulate the system to work for the people, it has only created a way for the system to control the people. Its one injustice after another, why? Because, they’re “just doing there jobs”. Yeah, currently 1/3 of the world is being genocided by Doctors and Nurses, “just doing there job”. Its fkn insanity where we are and if we don’t stop this shit we and our children’s minds and physically bodies are all going to become enslaved. This doesn’t end well for anyone. I don't believe it is wrong to require a permit for repairs. The building codes have changed considerably for decks. One reason is inexperienced people are building them with no knowledge of Carpentry and how to secure a joist header to a wall. Sometimes only using nails. When there are several people on the deck during a party, the additional weight can cause the board to come loose from the house and the deck falls. I wouldn't want the liability for ten injured people. When you modify it, it gives the local permit office the right to have it checked and brought up to code. Hence, having a trained professional look at it. It really is for the safety of anyone using it. Building codes are for the safety of everyone. Not to raise your taxes. That only happens when the county tax assessor views your property. And only from the exterior. And maybe once every five years or so.

My daughter bought a house in a town that requires a permit to do anything. She is struggling to get in there because the permits & regulations are ridiculous. Before even moving in, she needed an inspection and permit to move in. They keep coming up with stupid crap. She wanted to paint before moving in, well she had the light switch plates off while she is in the process of painting. The inspector denied her moving in, and needs a new inspection with plates back on. Before she can move in.

Unfortunately, I think it may be a zoning issue. Installing a shower gives the appearance of converting a commercial space into a residential space, which most building and zoning agencies frown on. While it is not illegal to sleep and reside in your shop, putting in a full bathroom might prove to be more difficult than you would imagine. Good luck with the process.

I got one once. I was the pastor of a small country church. I was finishing up an electrical upgrade. It came from a misunderstanding of jurisdiction. My friend, an electrician, was helping and thought it was different jurisdiction. It took four months to resolve since the work was already done and had trouble finding an electrician to sign off. Kept in contact with the inspector and he finally did inspection and signed off. He actually complimented me on the work. I check real close ever since then.

If it's anything like Chicago, all it takes is a little sumpin sumpin and the permit process is much easier.... I saw a 4 story luxury residential building going up across the alley from a project I was working on and the footings were dug and I saw the pile of rebar laying in the very small driveway. I figured they would be spending a few days putting the rebar in, tying it, getting it inspected...NOPE...The next day the crew arrived, concrete trucks drove up, and they started pouring, DROPPING REBARS in AFTER pouring (there wasn't a stick of rebar in the footings before the pour)....PLUS, there was not an inspector of any kind, anywhere...just crew people working, no watchers at all... In 1997 I did a condo conversion in a downtown highrise. I was running the job (fully permitted) and I asked the electrician (a large city based contractor) when he was going to be ready for inspection. He said " It's all been taken care of, we already got it". I was there every day, every hour the job was open. No electrical inspection, but we got the ok to close it up... Chicago is no place for the honest person, and I hate it. I can't wait to leave forever. If you want to truly know Chicago, you better be ready to see where and how the sausage is made. Everyone knows how corrupt it is, but nobody seems to care. They keep voting for the same connected types.... I can't even imagine how beautiful it could be minus the corruption - if it were fair to everyone, especially the honest people

I do commercial and residential remodels in SC and carry both licenses. The Town will likely want an engineer and potentially an architect involved now assuming you touched plumbing, electric, and obviously framing. This gets frustrating for me as well but you should have pulled the permit, plain and simple. Now, if you don't have a commercial license you are up a creek and need to find someone with the right license to pull the permit. I get asked to do this from time to time and always refuse. Friends want me to put my name on the permit and take the liability for work they never got licensed to do. Not gonna happen. I hope it works different in LA than here in SC but this is what I see here. NEW HERE AND LIKE THE CONTENT, SUBBED. PS...you are lucky the owner is a friend because most owners will play dumb with the town and blame the contractor for not pulling the permit they didn't want pulled in the first place. In my Town, the contractor gets fined for not pulling a permit...so that's nice. UGH
