Wigan has it, isn't it? These delicious pastries (well I have never been in Wigan, but your reaction tells it all) and also one of the best young singers in the UK (check out on Lucy Thomas when you like wonderful singing). Greetings from the Netherlands.
I used to live just outside of Wigan up the hill in Upholland, on the road to the dystopian 1960's Scouser hellhole that is Skelmersdale. I've been to that bakery, the pies are good. Never tried a Wigan kebab as it, well, just no. I don't need a pie in a barm cake in my life. Local legend has it that a Wigan Italian restaurant made a "Wigan lasagna" which was a pie between sheets of lasagna and covered in gravy then baked in the oven.
Well that pie looked very good and the barm cake looked fresh. A great lunch choice. You will find Haffners and Oddies online. Oddies is a family business over 100 years old. The potato pie is very similar, a wet mix of potatoes, obviously, onions and a hint of mince beef but delicious. The business has cut down on a lot of items they once made, cream horns, savoys, Parmentiers, etc. But the bread is fresh, doesn't fall apart when buttering but not cheap. Haffners is a butcher shop but the pies are well known, well filled and reasonably priced. Football fans love them. The other week I got a steak and kidney pie for £2.60. I had that with mushy peas for lunch and I was so full I had boiled eggs and soldiers for tea later. When pies like the Wigan one and the two I have mentioned are available, it is very tempting to eat more than one every couple of weeks. Good to see proper bakeries in Northern towns still. Simple, filling , tasty and fresh. Don't think I could eat a Wigan kebab these days but would have done when I was younger. Glad you enjoyed it. 👍
Yeah, those traditional shops deserve to do well. Making quality, affordable food. Maybe not the healthiest, but in the main the tastiest food aren't ha ha!
@@GreenoEats Oddies remained open during lockdown but to survive had to cut the menu. None of the shops closed down and they are in the sort of communities where people don't have cars. A lifesaver for some elderly folk.
Oh gosh ..... proper pie here mate served as only Northerners do. Being a Brummie it just reminds me of how great a lot of the grub from Lancashire / Greater Manchester is. Only one negative thing ..... Wigan ain't too far from my 1st mother in law - otherwise known as The Wicked Witch of Westhoughton ...... thanks for reminding me of her lol !!!!
Great video as usual mate, this is something I've been meaning to try. I'm going to do my own version, I'll give you a mention and put a link to this video
I do know all about these as I have friends that live around the area. I’ve never had one but smithy would certainly give one a try!! 😂 top video Greeno ….Smithy
I got to get myself one of them. Seems lovely. But something with more gravy would take this, to an 8 for me. But please correct me if i am wrong. The price is excellent, as is the video.
I have been advised that I should have added gravy and mushy peas to this. Not sure that could be eaten with your hands though, might become a knife and fork job!
Excellent lol, never tried one but it looks like something us Northerners would do 😂. Anything in bread up here. I sense Mrs Greeno not allowing this to become a staple foodstuff at Greeno HQ LMAO.
Definitely something that you’re more likely to see up North, but in a good way 🙂 I told Mrs Greeno about it and I could see her struggling to compute why anyone would put a whole pie in a sandwich🤣
@@collettegumbrell8854 Interesting... is there any other reason behind that you think, any northern heritage? Or something from a naval background perhas? I lived in Pompey for about 5 years in the 90s, and never saw anyone doing that ha ha!
The North does have some of the best pie shops and something dearly missed by ex pat family now living in Dorset , we get regular request to do a pasty run as they still can't find a decent pie shop down South 🤣 £2.40 no money at all and we're always shocked at how expensive food is in Dorset in comparison , although we now know some decent chippy's 😁 For artisan pies 'The Pie Hole' in Darwen my current favourite and put that meat and potato pie you've just reviewed to shame but figure it's got to be your first pie barm so it would have impressed Great vlog as always fella 👍
Just had a look at "The Pie Hole" Facebook page... oh.... my..... god ! That place looks incredible. Definitely on the list for my next trip north !! We don't really have pie shops down here, there's a place in Weymouth where you can buy pie and mash, like a food delivery business, they're on Just Eats. Called the Dorset Pie Company, maybe I should give them a try, but it'll cost me more than £3 that's for sure!!
You're supposed to put it on a plate and give it a good squash before you eat it! You parked about 50 feet away from the best chippie in the world too!
Never had one before, but I guess you can put anything in a sandwich right! It was tasty, although I understand next time I should have it with peas and gravy - sounds like a knife and fork job to me!! Thanks for watching!
@@GreenoEats Here's a new one if you can find a local fish shop that does them .. a bread bun chip butty , just with chips or a splash of curry or baked beans etc but then its battered and deep fried .. crispy on the outside and the bun doesn't get soggy ... Youngs of Seaton Carew( N East Coast) do them and you can see reviews on RU-vid . Maybe your local chip shop would do you one
@@geebee6737 although I was born and raised in Wigan I never ordered a “babies yed” but the Wigan Kebab was always a favourite of mine, the look 👀 on my wife’s face when she first saw me slip a cheese and onion pie in a barmcake said it all. The Wigan Kebab was traditionally a meat and potato pie but I was always adventurous and opted for the cheese and onion pie 👍
Pie didn't look homemade. Filling might be but the crimping was done by a machine to get that uniformity. The filling being on the wetter side made sense otherwise it would've been like eating sawdust. Decent value stodge on a cold day though 😃
I believe that the pies were made on site, but perhaps as you say they have a machine to do the crimping. Certainly filled the brief though of being inexpensive, filling and tasty 🙂
it looks stupid. far too many carbs. £2.40 for the pie may be good but 60p for a bun sure you could get one cheaper so now at home your going to try it with all your pies you eat your more likely going to increase bad thing in your body.
It's just a well known local thing in a town I happened to be in David, so I had to try it! I think for £3 overall it was good value, and while I know it wasn't healthy it was a tasty treat. Don't worry, it's not the sort of thing I am going to eat at home ha ha!
