Hi!! I've made an updated video for 2022, check it out if you found this one helpful :) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--9D212fLZZI.html
I’m sitting at the airport right now watching this. I quit my job a few days ago because I was so miserable there. I managed to find someone who is willing to take me in rent free until I manage to find a job and get my stuff together. I absolutely love NYC and it’s time for me to hustle if I want to be there. Thank for this video! Xoxo
If this video was helpful for ya, I created an entire playlist on helping you prepare for your move to NYC, and am always adding to it 🍎🗽 ru-vid.com/group/PLuR-6QF6WOR06JeJtuJr84nV_RmqZ-Kgr
Thank you for highlighting my comment. So the east coast is very cold. Well l will be looking for a place were everything is close together. This will be interesting for me.💕🐣💐💜👗🦢🐞💝🌻💔💟🌹🌺👶🐰🐱🍀🦚👘💞👼🌸🌾💚💗💖🏵❤💕🐣💐💜🐰🦢🐞💝🌻💔💞👘🦚🍀🐱🐰👶🌺🌹💟👼🌸🌾💚💗💖🏵❤💕🐣💐💜👗🦢🐞💝
I’m planning on moving in august! I’ve stopped focusing so much on Manhattan and have started looking in astoria and williamsburg/Brooklyn heights/park slope. I’m very excited
Oooh! Yes Astoria is a great place to look. I just moved from Williamsburg but I loooooved it there. Good luck in your search, i'll know you'll find something great 🙂
Thank you for this! I've been wanting to move to NYC for the longest and the apartments are finally in my budget so I'm going to bite the bullet and go in May. I'm open to any friends that are also moving around the same time !
Ive been doing so much research recently on moving to nyc.. It's been a dream of mine for at least 5 years, because its where my industry is clustered, and I even lived at Columbia summer of 2019 for a post-college program. With rent prices and my housing situation here in Oregon right now, its really just looking like the right time to move. It's not necessarily that I'm scared of moving, but I'm scared of the process! I feel like there's so much I still don't know! Thank you for sharing this video though! I really appreciated the tips
I completely understand where you’re coming from (Even literally, I’m from Portland 😂)! NYC seems like the perfect place for you. You’re welcome to leave any questions that come up throughout your process and I can try to help. Good luck x
I left queens in 2005. I've been wanting to move back and right now seems like the perfect time, the feeling is very real and heavy right now. California is in the tubes.
the fact that you're inviting others to comment so they can genuinely connect with you is super sweet lol I've never seen a youtuber do that. Either way I'm moving back to NYC after being away for a year. Prior to leaving, I lived there for 8 years. I'm a little scared if I'm honest but it feels right so here we goo lol I don't think NYC will ever be the same if I'm frank, but it'd just be different I believe. Different isn't bad :)
That's great you're coming back! After being here for 8 years I'm sure you will be able to notice all the changes. You're totally right tho, not all change is bad! The same old vibrant new york we all love was contributing to a MESS of homelessness and poverty, so I hope all this will help even out the resources. Thanks for watching! 🙂
@@ChelseaCallahan I agree with this 100%. I think the last 4 years and specifically this pandemic has shown people what isn’t working. Not only in the city, but worldwide. I’m excited to see the changes, but change also come with chaos so we’re see. Of course! You have great content! And the your authenticity shows through your videos. That’s rare. Keep going :)
Manhattan is a zombie right now, but now(ish) is the time. Try to move back before the Summer to strong arm those decent rent deals; I've a feeling the rents will shoot up within the next 18 months.
I’m planning on moving to NY at the beginning of next year and have a visit planned early December for a week to check out the city. I’m staying in Brooklyn since that’s where I’m looking to move. I know you mentioned the trains are not always working and in Northern Brooklyn the J and M lines sometimes can even freeze. If you’re someone who has a car, is it worth it bringing it to NY if you’re looking at areas such as Greenpoint/Williamsburg? Or even if you’re looking at other neighborhoods in Brooklyn, Manhattan, etc. if you have a car, what are your thoughts on bringing it with you to the city? I work in a field where being late really isn’t an option and have options lined up as far as work goes. I really really love NY and am coming to visit again because I want to see what it’s like during the pandemic as well as look at the neighborhoods where I’m considering moving to. I definitely don’t want to make a commitment to something without knowing whether or not it feels like home to me. I am legit MISERABLE where I’m at right now (Texas) and I’ve wanted to move to NY my whole life. I’m lonely in Texas and know that NY is a very different environment as far as people go but I feel confident enough to go out and meet people there as opposed to here.
I’m moving to NYC in August and I’m really not sure how to start! I plan to visit in May just to look at apartments. I’m excited . A little overwhelmed too lol
When you say, don’t be afraid to move without a job, how do get approved somewhere without one? That’s what I’m scared of, not being able to get approved since I know the minimum income is really high there. Thanks in advance!
Yes you're totally right! I think where I was going with that was there are lots of temporary living options available until you find a job. Subletting a room with roommates is super common (which usually doesn't require credit check & proof of income), but it all comes down to exactly what you want and what you're comfortable with especially with covid! I hope that helps
I moved to New York in 2019, I stayed with a family member for my first few months. I didn’t get a job until after 2 months of moving there and then I got an apartment by the end of 2019. You really have to hustle to live in nyc.
Love this video it’s so thoughtful. I’m moving there in may and everything you said really resonated with me. I know it won’t be like the New York I’ve visited but it is still New York and I owe it to myself to live there like I’ve always wanted to even under the circumstances
ILOVE NEW YORK BABYYYYYY. Such great tips that can be applied for moving to any big city in 2021. So true about the price difference especially locking in the lower rent price and waiting for things to return to some normalcy. AND YES your point about transportation being a non-negotiable for you, ME TO! I'm about a 8-10 minute walk from the metro station right now and that is easily the max I can ever do *sorry not sorry*. Door to door to my office is 20 minutes total and I would not change that for anything!! I hate commuting LOL. I used to do a much longer commute years ago and I swore it took off 5 years of my life.. AND OMG THE TJS'S GIRL SAME!!!!! I used to live 3 minute walk to a TJ and I miss it sooooooo mucchhh!!!!!😂😅😆 Anyway, have a good New Years Chelsea, can't wait to see your content in 2021!!!
YES commute is literally everything. Walking to work feels like a dream!! All that extra sleep too lol. 3 minutes from a TJ's?! That is my actual dream 😍Happy New Year to you too, lovely!!
Just came across your videos and they are very helpful. My boyfriend and I will be moving to New York come December or Jan at the latest. He is normally from New York but lost his job last summer. In a way way a blessing because we would of never met. We are in a lease until December is why we have to wait to come. In the mean time we are just saving and getting thing in line so we can make it as easy as we can to move out there from Ohio. I have always wanted to move to New York since I can remember and it’s exciting to be planning and knowing we will be there at the end of the year. I have been visiting New York every other year since I was 18. So I dream will be finally coming true. Thank you for the very informed video!!!
I want to move there in the summer of 2021 (when the pandemic has hopefully calmed down 😭)! I'm seriously worried about not being able to find a job... so we'll see how it is as we get closer to the summer. Either way, I am hopeful and can't wait to move to nyc ! I've been saving money for nearly 3 years now , so I think by that point I will have enough 😵
I’m in the same boat!! The job situation has me a kinda scared about making the leap and moving to the city. But I think I just need to go for it because if not now then when? 😭
I plan on moving to NYC in June of 2021 and I’m so excited but very nervous! I think one of my biggest fears are the cold winters since I’ve lived in Southern California my entire life and run very cold.
Yes! I love this video! After years of putting it off I finally made the decision to plan to move to New York. I'm so excited. Yes it might take me a bit to save to get there but I need to finally chase my dream and not be afraid. I just subscribed! I love your content!
LOL...I paid only $90 dollars a month for a one bedroom , one bath, large eat in kitchen , living room apt on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in the early 1970s when I was single and working as a fashion illustrator, and that was rent controlled, an old brownstone! With two roomates that was $30 dollars each! Then I rented a brand new studio apt. when I moved to the suburbs, with AC, a full walk in closet, huge linen closet, galley kitchen, one bath with tub along with swimming pool/tennis courts for just $162 a month! That same apt on the Upper East Side, now renovated goes for $2500 - 3000 a month for one person! Used to pay just 10 dollars a month for food and next to nothing for utilities! Subway fare was 35 cents a ride, movies were $1.25, a drink at a single's bar was around 2 -3 dollars! A bounced check was just $3.00!! What are the skyrocketed prices today! And we thought inflation was bad in the 1970s?? HA!! I wouldn't pay any of the exhorbitant prices today that have gone through the stratosphere since then, just shows you just how GREEDY people have gotten these days and everything keeps on going up and up..the landlords, real estate, property taxes, home insurance, the greedy banks with their outlandish fees!
I loved nyc while I lived there. I moved out in the middle of the pandemic and I don’t want to go back anytime soon. I think seeing city the way it is now would make me sad
I want to move in the summer! It has been the plan for the past 4 years and i'm finally just going to take the jump and do it. Coming from Indiana so I have some anxiety of making a new home on the east coast but also very excited to start a new chapter in my life :)
this video gave me so much hope 😄 the only question i still have is when you moved here as you said, without any money, how did you do that? (i'm saving money but it's not like i'm gonna have a whole lot and i'm also from central europe...)
Hi there! I definitely don't recommend coming here without money as I did. I ended up using credit cards and accumulating some debt!! So it is possible, but just not recommended 🙂
hi! i normally don't post comments on videos but i really enjoyed your tips, i thought they were really thoughtful and made me even more excited to move?? i do have a few questions.. the first of which being that if you're moving from out of state as i am (georgia, yikes) do you have any particular tips for people like me? i was thinking to sublet an apartment in brooklyn for a month, which would give me time to do more apartment viewings, explore, and get to know the area, but do you have any other suggestions? also, you mentioned someone who didn't quite secure a job in NY yet but was planning to move with a huge savings.. I've been doing the same but how much would you suggest saving? the way i've been calculating it is like if my rent were $850, I should have like 10x that amount? not sure lol thanks for the tips! *subscribes*
hi there! exactly what you suggested is what I would suggest-- subletting to buy yourself time so you can be here in person to view apartments/secure a job. The bigger the savings the better, I would suggest around 10k if you don't have a job lined up and want to be comfortable! That would cover a couple months rent, potential broker fee, security deposit, food/transportation when you arrive and then some. You have a great instinct, and planning ahead as you are will make the transition so much more enjoyable!!! good luck! x
i just got a job after graduation and the best part is that they’re going to let me work remote from NY!! i would be moving around the beginning of March 2022. would you say what you talked about in this video still applies? i hear the city has come back to life mostly at this point.
I just moved to the UWS and I am also experiencing a lot of anxiety. The crime is so much worse than it was before and I just don’t feel safe after dark. Looking forward to the weather getting warmer and hoping that will help a bit.
thank you for the tips 💛 looking to move to Brooklyn in April! Very scared but ready to make the jump...if anyone watching this is looking for a roommate let’s connect! 😭
I grew up in Staten Island I know live somewhere else but I just wanna get away from my toxic family 😀😂I wish I could just go I’m 19 years old also gay😂
I love your videos Chelsea, I’m planning to move with my fiancé and our teenage daughters.I can finally afford to move.I’m so anxious and nervous but ready. Any areas you recommend for people with teenagers
So thinking of moving to NYC from Chicago. In Chicago I live in River North and have a garage in my townhouse. I’ve noticed that the townhomes in NYC do not have garage parking. Question: what do families with kids do regarding car transportation since most townhomes do not come with garage parking.
Awesome video. Looking to make the move in a month myself. Excited for the options and looking forward to working with other creatives as well. Thanks for the tips! Do you have any others maybe discussing neighborhoods? I'm looking at brooklyn heights and park slope. Cheers!
That's amazing! I have a video coming out tomorrow discussing a couple neighborhoods but not video *yet* on all neighborhoods. I've heard good things about brooklyn heights and park slope, but be careful about relying on the F subway line to get you anywhere ontime lol. Good luck! x
Such a helpful video, thank you! Planning on making the move from Orange County at the beginning of July, and I'm hoping the prices stay decent until then.
I am finishing my BA in the fall and hopefully I get to move to NYC in time for graduate school in the spring of 2022. Do you have any recommendations of good neighborhoods in the Harlem/Upper Manhattan (east or west)?
That's so exciting, congrats!! Check out Washington Heights/ Inwood area! It's a bit of a hike from the city, and on the weekends the subways get unreliable (the only con), but it's at the end of the subway line so you always get a seat. There's also Fort Tryon Park up there, so beautiful.
i live in Australia and want to move to NYC (i have a very long time to come tho). for like jobs and that do you still need to have anything for that (like papers/documents)? as well for like visa when you put what will you work for..? (i apologise if this doesn’t make sense) 😅
i would love to just pack my bags and move over, but from the UK i have the whole added issue of finding a job with somewhere who would sponsor a visa, and i dont know if thats going to be more or less likely in this climate!
This is a really interesting question. I'll try to find out some info on that and make a video about it. I hope you're doing alright in the lockdowns there-- sending health and safety vibes to ya ✨
Omg I’m in the same boat except I’m from Canada. I’m graduating from university this year so I’m hoping someone will want to sponsor me when the time comes lolol
Upper west side by Inwood, and Washington hieghts is your best best bet. I’ve been leaving here my whole life. I’m in shocked above-ground train stations is a deal breaker?! Just wait by the booth, and once you hear the train start coming to go upstairs that’s what all New Yorkers do on a above ground stations lol 🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️
Oooh yes I loved living in inwood & washington heights! Best bodegas there by far, as well. The above ground is just a deal-breaker for me personally, prolly not for everyone 🙂thanks for watching!
That rent might be affordable now, but once the pandemic is over, that rent is going to go up. Even worse, when your lease is about to be renewed, you might be shocked to see it is almost twice or three times the amount you were paying. That is horrible, after getting all setup and comfortable. But the thing is that life should not just be about going to work and paying rent, but in NYC, it seems like that is what living there is.
Totally. I share the same thoughts, and go over it is this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-C6PRSO4IB-s.html The living paycheck to paycheck lifestyle is okay for awhile, but everyone deserves to have something more. I hope the city starts to work for all of it's people after the pandemic, not just those with lots of money!
That was a very helpful video! I just moved here, still looking at apartments and feeling pretty overwhelming tbh. It's hard deciding where to live! I'm excited and hopeful to make new friends here though
I have been wanting to move to New York for forever and I was going to make the jump and then COVID happened and on top of that all of the police defunding. Many people have told me that the crime is really bad in New York so now I’m worried to come because I won’t be able to afford an expensive area. Can you give any advice or opinions?
Hey Debbie! I'm sorry COVID messed up your plans to move to the city. It's definitely true about escalating crime. I'm not able to live in an expensive area either, so I just take the normal safety precautions and I haven't had any issues during the pandemic times. I would say don't let it keep you from coming, but just be especially diligent about finding a street to live that is well lit, a building/unit you feel safe in, and building management you can trust, mindful traveling after dark etc. especially during these times. I hope this helps a little bit, good luck xx
Love hearing your point of view!!! I guess I would not last too long in NYC 😂 I got used to smaller cities!! Loved the times I visited there though ❤️❤️
Hello, so I’m 20 about to be 21 in August and I’m really scared. I’ve never left Texas before and this is my first time going and I’ll be alone. I have an Airbnb set and ready, my ticket (greyhound) and I have around 400 in my saving after that. No job and no idea where to start looking. I’ll be in New York on the 17th around 8. It’s a 2 day trip lol I just want to be where I’ve always dreamed to be and make a name for myself. Become the makeup artist, fashion designer, or model I’ve always wanted to be. I’m just scared... I know I can do this. I mean I’ve already have a plan basically just scared to be alone. Please if you would like to grab lunch and talk I’ll be more then grateful and would please love some advice.
@@ChelseaCallahan thank you! I managed to live in Chicago a few years ago and hopefully NYC is next. Again, thank you so much for this video. So unbiased which is what I need!
I plan on moving to NYC in August, as I have a job lined up for mid August in Manhattan. I’m a recent graduate so my last year tax returns clearly don’t show that I make 40x the rent. However my income from this new job will be 40x the rent. My biggest anxiety about moving into the city is not being approved for an apartment because of this. Are landlords understanding of this situation? I’ll clearly be able to afford the apartment once I’m making this new income but don’t have the documents to prove it besides my job contact. Please let me know if you have any advice on this! Thanks so much!
I don’t have direct experience with this, but I’ve heard making sure you have a letter from your employer stating the salary you will be making it should be enough! But it can be nerve wracking because each landlord requires different things. Congrats on the job tho!! That’s HUGE already having that lined up!! Good luck! 💖
I just set my NYC moving goal. I am doing it for my 49th year. I am finishing up my advanced masters degree there and doing my internship. I have saved enough to live and have some fun for the 1 year I will be living there. My ex husband is from Brooklyn so I am pretty familiar. Thanks for the tips!
I completely hear you, it’s super overwhelming. Hopefully as it gets closer to your moving day all the pieces will come together 💓 if there’s any specific questions you have along the way lmk!
I’ve always wanted to move to New York haha, but looking at RU-vid videos it looks like it’s not gonna happen 😅 are rent prices really as high as people say that they are or are they over-exaggerated? it’s just crazy to me that New York has the population that it has with prices so high and even ghetto areas too
It's wild right?? Rent prices are very high here compared to other places, but because of so many people leaving the city during the pandemic, prices have dropped a lot so it's not a bad time to move here rent-wise 😊Check out streeteasy!
@@ChelseaCallahan okay thank you for your help!! a lot of New Yorkers are against people moving to New York because of prices and now I see why 😅 but it is good to see someone different
@@MACK7A I think any other time I would agree with them! Hopefully these lower prices can help make the city more accessible. But yeah, it's completely ridiculous how little you get for how much apartments cost 😅 good luck!
I have been living in NYC for 30 years and have enjoyed most of the amazing authentic artistic, music, culinary, intellectual venues and more, amazing people, face to face organic parties!!! ... and ... Yeah! come to live to this city and wake up one day homeless ! The dream is over... Smart and professionals are living New York...If you are rich and talented you still have to quarantine, get vaccinated twice and wear a mask...Even if you have the Excelsior Pass... New York will never be the same...dirty subways with rats, most of the business closed, scarcity of jobs...nasty paranoid people who just stick inside their departments with their so called Facebook friends (A perverted illusion of a kind)... Small apartments, selfish and narcissistic roommates, The city with the highest taxes and homeless and crime ever ... Come an enjoy your American dream, sorry! I meant to say , your deserved best nightmare, Freddy Kruger will be your unexpected host , good luck to you all..." New York New York" ♫♫ Frank Sinatra
Super helpful, thank you! Would love to get in touch sometime. I’m thinking of moving in April. Booked two weeks in Brooklyn in March to see what it’s like firsthand.
I’m so glad it could help! Such a smart idea to visit and experience first hand. Brooklyn is so lovely, definitely to go Brooklyn bridge park when you’re here 🙂
I used to work near Lincoln Square and it's always bustling with the pre-post theater crowd! There are also a lot of restaurants, I'd say it's a pretty nice area to live. I don't know too much about Clinton Hill, but I'd aim for living closer to the A train than the G train in that area (it's a bit more reliable 🙂) congrats on moving!
I live in a small town in Oklahoma and I need to get the hell out of here I don’t know where to start or how to survive I have like 3k saved up and I’m tempted to just use that to get out there and wing it but i obviously don’t want to end up homeless
Same here!! I’m living and Vegas and I’m done with this city. Im about to start saving to move but part of me wants to say “fuck it” and just go…but I need a job 💀
Looking forward to move to nyc on my own, this vid really gives me some positive vibe, but with no job, no money, no friend, do you have any suggestion, how to survive across the country..
I love you're giving yourself a fresh start, that's so exciting! Only advice is to save up as much as you can, and then take everything day by day 🙂You got this
I hear you on that!! It can be so scary! Try joining the fb groups for finding a room to sublet: NYC Apartments & Housing (no spam), Ghostlight Housing (if you're in the arts community) & NYC Brooklyn Housing. There are sooo many more too! I explain some tips on how to use the groups in another video & i'll leave the link if that's helpful --> ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Bvf6uM0TcjQ.html
Thanks for all the advice! I live in Jersey but looking to move to NY this year, would love some neighborhood reccomendations or meet up if you're looking for a new friend ☺
Hey Leila! Send me a message on instagram when you're in the city (@chel.call) ✨ I give some neighborhood recommendations in this follow up video I made, I hope it can be useful: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Bvf6uM0TcjQ.html thanks for watching!
Just gonna be honest here and say you're the only white person I've seen on YT that understands the struggles of the city compared to the boogie RU-vidrs that exaggerate NY like it's some paradise. It takes hard work and grit to survive in this city.
I am totally blind and I want to move to New York to find a job that will benefit me. Do you think waiting can help since they give good tips? I currently don’t have money to move which is sucks. Cheers from Arizona
waiting tables always makes good money in nyc! restaurants here are struggling with all the covid restrictions, but when it gets better here i'm sure it will be a great way to make money 🙂
As someone whos moved 9 times, where did u noticed it was the best neighborhoods to move in that was family oriented, family activities a nightlife for families???
Just from what I noticed, the more expensive areas are the ones that are the most family oriented. So it can depend on your budget, but the areas I felt the safest in were Williamsburg, Brooklyn (just over the bridge from some night life in the lower east side without manhattan prices)-- Crown Heights, Brooklyn as well (it has everything you need in that neighborhood including night life). Washington Heights, and Chelsea as well. Hope this helps you in your search!
@@ChelseaCallahan thank you! Yes we have upper west in our search for a while. As well as rego park in queens. Its hard to find info on youtube. Mostly it's single or couples on videos moving to ny . We are excited for the move. Florida is not the state for us.
@@guillermoortiz1492 Upper West is a great place to look right now for lower prices because of covid! I've never lived in Queens but have heard good things. Best of luck to you and your family during the move.
Williamsburg is not for families. Crown Heights is cool but kids are popping off every night, so unless you wanna take your chances with stray bullets (murders & violent crime are up 400% in 2020). Rego Park makes a lot more sense. So does Forrest Hills. Bay Ridge might also work for you. Maybe if you really research Washington Heights, or Woodlawn in the Bronx. The outer Burroughs (depending) are what you're looking for. unless you have incredible savings and job opportunities, the Upper West side is gonna be out of your price range. If you can afford $4,000 to $5,000 a month, then New York will be very family friendly to you.
