I have finally made time to sit and catch up with Gordon's Scotland videos. Thank you for all that you do for us, Gordon. I must say, I had no idea how small Scotland truly is in regard to population and land. It makes up in attitude, surely, as I have always perceived Scotland as fierce! Take care, Gordon. . . off to find the other videos!

Thank you, lovely video. I am of the MacDonald clan but spelling was changed by my grandfather Angus Peter to MacDonall to thwart his uncles influence on and power over him. He emigrated to Canada and then the St. Louis, MO area of the US. I think our understanding of the climate of Scotland is better understood by not only longitude and latitude but also by mentioning the Gulf Stream flowing by the Western side.

Hi Gordon. Very informative and excllent presentation. I look forward to your next video. My hubby and I have been to Scotland and loved it immensely. Too short a trip and we were exhausted running from site to site. So we are coming back this April. We currently live in Florida and will taking at least a year long trip to the U.K. so we will have more time to take our time exploring and just leisurely enjoying our surroundings. Your videos could not be better timing for us. Thank you.

I have been researching my Scottish ancestry and came across your videos. I descend from David Thompson, a fishmonger who spent summers in New England years before the Mayflower ever arrived and from David Hamilton who was a POW sent to the colonies in 1652.

@@gordonsscotland8441 There were many Scottish POWs send in the mid-1650s. Some of their descendants went to New Brunswick at the time of the American Revolution before the new immigrants and Dragoons started coming. There wasn't a lot of mixing with the French, the Acadians had been beaten back by the English.

Very interesting. 3 of my grandparents were born in Scotland. Kilsyth, Hamilton, &Ayr. My grandmother grew up speaking Galic and her family was from the Hamilton/Carluke area. So, I was curious about your comment on it not being spoken in that area. When she moved to the USA her father would not let them speak it at school only at home.
@gordonsscotland8441
@gordonsscotland8441 3 года назад
Hi Laura, thanks for this. Gaelic was spoken in some parts of the Borders, especially if families had moved there from the highland area, but in the main it was Scots (a variation of English) that was spoken south of the Highland Line. Hence all of Robert Burns’ poems and songs are in Scots, and there is no great Gaelic tradition in these parts of Scotland, unlike the far north west of the Highlands and the Western Isles. Interesting about the father wishing his children to speak English at school, probably he would see that as being in their best educational interests! Kind regards, Gordon

@@gordonsscotland8441 I know the Scots language. My cousin and her husband get talking and I do not understand a word they say. I really have to see him talk and he is great about slowing down for us. Once my cousins daughter heard my daughter and I talking. She looked at us and said what language are you speaking because that isn't English. We laughed so hard. I love coming over and miss not coming this year with Covid.

Hi Seth. Apologies for the delay in replying but I’ve been a wee bit busy! That would be great to do an interview, but could we leave it for a wee while? We’re in the middle of a strict lockdown here in Scotland, no idea when it will end. We recently moved home and can’t get any workmen in, so I’m trying to do quite a few things myself!! (Which is worrying!). Keep in touch. My email is gordon@gordonsscotland.com. Kind regards, Gordon

David Hill Question? Wasn't Berwick a very inportant town in Scotland i believe it was one of the royal bourghs and had its own mint and was also an inportant sea port. and didnt they put william Wallaces arm in Berwick after his exacution in London.And isn't it called the lost limb off Scotland. I just feel Berwick doesn't get its real place in Scottish history. Love your talks. A Berwicka. now in Australia.
@gordonsscotland8441
@gordonsscotland8441 5 лет назад
Indeed it was, Christine. I think it was often seen as the second most important town in Scotland, after Edinburgh. You're right about it not receiving its place in history - it doesn't get the recognition it deserves. The east coast of Scotland was economically and politically much more important for Scotland for many centuries, because of trade with England and the continent. It was only really after the industrial revolution and the emergence of America that the west coast ports and Glasgow began to rise in prominence. However, a great quiz question is - what team is the only non-Scottish team to play in the Scottish Football League? Answer - Berwick Rangers! Glad you like the videos. Kindest regards. Gordon

I have a question. You say the clans never really existed in the lowlands. My mother was a Moffatt and I always assumed the clan was from Moffat. I thought Moffat was in the lowlands? I’m confused.
@gordonsscotland8441
@gordonsscotland8441 4 года назад
Hi, thanks for this. You are correct in what you say, the Moffats were a Borders Clan, and it is thought they gave their name to the lovely town of Moffat in Annandale. When I said that clans didn’t really exist in the Lowlands it was more in the context of the way that the Highland clans operated - an ancient feudal system where the clan chief owned everything, and everyone owed fealty to him. The lowlands and borders of Scotland contained many powerful families, like Douglas and Armstrong, and whilst they wielded awesome power, they operated more as powerful, landed lords or families. My main point in the video was that the highland clan system was long outdated and hence it ultimately collapsed. The strong Borders families (or clans) continued operating for quite a while. Hope this helps! Kind regards, Gordon. PS if you’ve never been to Moffat, you should try and visit it. It’s such a lovely wee town, a centre for the wool trade many years ago and for the weaving of tweed. The Moffat Check is an attractive tweed.

A sober and sobering view of Scotland and her clans. Gordon, without wishing to cause any offence, because I share your Scottish heritage -- and some Confederate as well, even more problematic -- I would suggest that your pride in that heritage is based more on the romanticized, Victorian view of Scotland and the clans than it is on the more ancient reality of cattle raiding, feuding, Highland clearances, etc. Our uprooted modern existence yearns for symbols, icons, belonging and a sense of permanence which the cleaned-up clan myth can fill quite handily. My folks are supposed to have come from the Lowlands, but on touring the Highlands some years ago, I remember thinking, "Gawd, I'm glad Richard Anderson didn't miss that boat back in 1640."
@gordonsscotland8441

Thanks, Griffin. Yes, I agree with you! My love of my clan now is because it evolved into a social grouping, and doesn’t now spend its time murdering, torturing and stealing from its fellow countrymen! Kind regards, Gordon
