That Hiwatt was built by my great uncle. Lovely to hear it! I have a Harry Joyce 50 watt combo, serial number 001 that was a 16th birthday present. Still the best amp I own.
@@JB_Eckl I didn’t. Hiwatt was named by Dave Reeves, my great uncle worked for him, as a builder in the early 70’s until Dave’s death. He then started making amps under his own name “Harry Joyce”
Harry Joyce Electronics did begin wiring amps for HIWATT in 1970. My '71 DR103 (serial 11**) has the red inspection marks on solder points so it was wired by them
With all the - I don't want to say gloomy - "serious" episodes where Mick mentions mental health and just health in general, seeing him joyful and just plain giddy is what makes this episode great! Looks like you both had a well needed and deserved blast, and it shows! Cheers from France.
I bought a 79 Marshall JMP one time. Played it at a gig. Sounded good. The next night I played one of my Hiwatts. A buddy had come to both nights. He was sitting where he couldn’t see the head. Second night after the show he said “Man - it sounds so much better tonight”…. And that’s how Hiwatts are.
I could just watch intro’s like this, and be 100% fulfilled with inspiration and close the video. But, you guys are so infectious with your playing, chat and knowledge that it keeps me locked in. You guys are in your own league. 💜🎸
Whenever you guys play a hiwatt I’m always struck that it sounds to me like sounds I’ve heard in famous albums. Maybe famous live albums too. Maybe it’s The Who, Pink Floyd, I’m not sure, but it really evokes classic rock that I’ve heard before. More than any Marshall’s or fenders and whatnot.
On the advice of a friend, my first gigging amp was a 70's Hiwatt 100 into a Marshall cab.Back then, there wasn't the info there is now , and I learned fast that it took stacking Rats and Muffs to get it to overdrive at any reasonable volume.Remains clear in my memory as so clean, and so mercilessly loud on 3, - just a good thing we practiced in abandoned warehouses. Another guitarist friend had a little Princeton , which I learned equally quickly, - was totally my bag.
Absolutely brilliant. I've been in the presence of Gilmour's volume, it really is out of this world and shakes you to the core. At the same time it's so clean, not very distorted until he really wants it. I'd give anything to be there again.
VOLUME. Gain with clarity. I saw Floyd back in the late 80s. Every note DG played sang and bloomed out with, like the OP said, clarity and "clean distortion". Volume. There is no substitute. Quantitative change (increase in volume) leads to qualitative change (guitar becomes a different instrument). I think I've heard that said once or twice on this show, yeah? ;)
I have a Hiwatt DR504, and it is the biggest sounding amp I ever had. I love it, its big clean sounds, the build quality (the insides are just an art piece to look at), It is just perfect. An awesome video guys, what a stellar sounds!
Mega. Just, mega. Wow wow wow wow - wow. Mick, your playing with the Collings was just, inspirational as always. Rock on. There's nothing else to say on that one really, just, absolutely speechless.
Watching the smile on Dan’s face and Mick wandering around pulling those awesome licks out wearing a strap is so much more entertaining than seeing you both sat on the chairs the whole time. Mick and his faces while leaning back into the sound with the strap on is a joy to watch. Keep it up fellas.
Coda is my local store, I’m glad they handled that refund and such professionally, it’s an excellent place! That amps also the coolest tone you guys have had on the show since the LA30BL!
Aw man! I love seeing how excited you guys are playing this stuff and playing LOUD! So many great tones, and Dan, loving the new Longbottom guitar! It sounds amazing! Seriously, what a giant bucket of inspiration!!!!
I've been making records for twenty odd years and Hiwatt days were always great guitar days in the studio. The 504s were always great, but punishing. 103s are awesome, but can't be in the same room with the matching cab. Diming the master always resulted in gorgeous tones that were face meltingly loud. Love the cleans these guys produce. Grindy stuff is unparalleled, but maybe too deafening.
Love your regular informative videos, but there's nothing wrong with videos like this every once in a while, just some great tone and playing. Really enjoyed this!
Well done, boys. I'm so disappointed when an episode is over. Hard to come back to earth with so much soaring playing. There's no substitute for Dan's reactions, the old horse dealer. New logo is superb, dialed in perfectly at 2 o'clock and the intro animation is perfect. So glad you guys are back in full. Can't wait 'till next Friday! Cheers. -G
I live in a region of the USA where the Amish have a strong presence. They only use horses for transport and work. Dan's hat and beard make me want to start calling him Jacob.
Another wonderful episode. Despite the cab situation, there were still fantastic tones to be had there. It shows that quality amps, pedals, and of course players factor in so much to the overall tone. Hiwatts are underrated, especially for their clean tones, I think. And speaking of quality amps, on older designs there is the "swirl" sound that can happen. Apparently this is due mostly to bias shift. I would love for a video on that aspect of older amps, how pedals can enhance or mitigate the effect, as well as how or if it lends itself to inspiration. Thank you to everyone working at TPS for your endeavor to educate, investigate, and have fun with tones. It makes for a wonderful way to start Fridays.
You are absolutely right, CODA Music is a wonderful Guitar store, I bought two TWO ROCK amps there.. Solid show again gents... Mick your board is insane
You guys have really opened my eyes to what single coils can handle and actually do I’ve always been a humbucker guy but now considering taking the hot rails out of my traditional Chapman and making it single cooked again : also just got a strat cause of you guys ! Cheers this episode was awesome !!
Alright...let's be real here. Mick has some of the best feel I've ever encountered. Truly a magnificent player. Dan is amazing in his own right, but jeez.......Mick is on another level.
I don't know what you're talking about, with Mick, it's neat seeing his level of technical virtuosity, but I love watching him play because he can get so lost in his style, while with Dan, it's neat seeing his level of technical virtuosity, but I love watching him play because he can get so lost in his style. Two different styles, both excellent, and I wouldn't trade either for the other.
First thing my partner says on entering the room halfway into the video? "Why is their new logo giving you the finger?" Once you see it, you can't unsee it!
The year was ‘97, 16 year old me was preparing to play my first show with 4 friends in front of our high school “st. Patsapalooza” when one of our amps blew...our local shop had an amazing amp tech who was also a cousin of a band mate and the only loaner he had was one of these. With our lives as collateral, we brought it to practice and eventually on stage. Never forgot the first guitar sound of the HiWatt and a Russian big muff when the A kicked on on sweet emotion by Aerosmith!....memories!
Making me think about one of my guitar heroes the late, great Bernie Torme. Often seen in proximity to a HiWatt stack, especially in the Electric Gypsies days. Sad loss. Great show as ever TPS.
I'm fortunate to have an 18 watt Hi-Tone combo and it can approximate that sound but it still has to get ungodly loud first. I can't imagine the sheer force of a 100 watter.
I don't have a hiwatt but I have a 120 watts vox ac120. Once I played through it dimed at 1 meter from me, most amazing experience ever. There is just nothing that beat the tone and feel of that amp for me, it is perfect.
I enjoyed hearing Blue and Red again. Not only do the guitars sound great, but since I’ve heard them on so many episodes they now provide a good reference point on new ideas and equipment.
Even with the cabinet adventure you went on, the Hiwatt sounds glorious. Both amps are tremendous. Makes me wonder if the glory comes from the overall volume as an integral part of the experience. My answer is YES. I am sure all of us watching would love to come over and have play. Thanks as always guys.
'Mick meets.. Marty Schwartz' Haha couldn't resist. Another great show, that Hiwatt sounds so good.. possibly a bit too loud for the gigs I do.. Jim from Leeds
Glorious, greetings and salutations from Muscle Shoals Alabama hit recording capital of the world 🗺. Missed the live show. A doff of the chapeau to you my good sirs
Crazy as it sounds, I had friend who had one of these Hiwatt Custom 100 heads, plus two 2x12 cabs in the bedroom of his parent’s semi-detached house, and we used to rehearse there. It had a glorious sound, which I have always considered a benchmark and, despite owning some excellent amps over the years, I don’t think I have ever played through anything better. He had a Binson Echorec that acted as a pre-amp and the combination was truly fantastic. I’m not sure his neighbours were quite so impressed but that amp certainly left a great impression on me…..
We had a HiWatt at our rehearsal rooms... For a while it didn't have a matching speaker box.....I used a Marshall quad, and then an Orange quad..... With the Orange, and later the proper HiWatt quads, it genuinely sounded like an aeroplane taking off..... I would usually stay on volume level 2, max 4-5.... Alas, those days are over now, and I'm retired......🙏👍🙂🎸✅
So, glancing through the video description until I can get a chance to watch it, and I see “Bah, no more volume” and then again, “ Bah, not enough volume”, Bahaha!! Cant wait actually watch it now! 🤣
Well since the cab wasn't up to snuf, they'll have to be a revisit vid. :) Also great to get to see the Jag even for a few seconds. (quick Jag tip, try the strangle switch with some Big Muffs)
