So here is my tip: Screenshot this comment (not mine, but the one with time for each tip) and make it your phone's wallpaper(picture) for the lock screen, since you will see the lock screen more than the "in" screen. Good luck.

I would add another point that really works for me 11) FINISH YOUR ART PIECES: don't abandon your projects or work forever on a single one, give them some form of closure, and be consistent, finish your current project before starting another one. If you feel you have a lot of ideas, tackle them one by one, if you are working on a project and you think you have the best idea ever, just make a quick sketch and notes, then return and finish your current project. This forces you to go through all stages of the process. Think about music, if you learn only the intros of songs or the solos you're missing everything else, and play a complete song is as satisfying as finishing an art piece.

I can confirm that having a project rather than a single piece is the best way to produce art. I spent a year trying to find inspiration for personal work and I came up with nothing but then I decided to take on an entire project with about 12 different pieces and once I committed to that the inspiration just flooded in. Artists need direction. Ideas don't just appear out of thin air. We need structure and a idea to work off of.

@@mayak5908 I had the exact same problem. I couldn't settle on a subject that I enjoyed enough to create art for. And then I realised I absolutely loved the stories told in The Witcher 3, so I decided to start making Witcher art. I wanted to create cards but just drawing scenes from the game didn't motivate me. So then I was like, what if I use the archetypes from tarot cards and try to draw the characters as those archetypes? And then I got super into it. Maybe start with a subject that inspires you and then come up with a format that gives you the structure you need to stay motivated.

Draw what makes you happy, what you crave the most, because that will fuel your passion for drawing and in consecuence make you a better artist. Even the best artists, who do regular commisions and have drawing as their job, they all have some separate time to draw what they like, to draw something that they love.

My art before and now are incredibly different, and then last year I completely lost passion for art and just drawing illustrations. I stopped drawing altogether, so I started wondering what happened? how did I go from always drawing even though it wasn't that good to drawing better art without any passion? or just feeling like I'm forcing myself to draw for the sake of it. I feel like my art now, even though it's better than before is very stagnant, and I definitely have been ignoring a lot of things that make me a better artist. This video was a refreshing reminder of what I should have been doing :))

I think the self-awareness is an interesting point. I started drawing more often 1-2 years ago and i know i lack confidence. So before every artistic project i have to get my "If it goes wrong, then i'll learn from it"-mindset. Sometimes it takes weeks of thinking before i even start a drawing, but when i finish it i am actually surprised. My skills aren't as bad as i thought. So I keep trying to improve and the thought that i always might just underestimate myself helps me.

One thing I recently learned and started to use maybe a week or so ago that I wish I knew earlier: If you feel like you can’t draw every single day, which is understandable, have a paper/sketchbook where you draw at least one thing every day. I like to draw just a simple face, maybe at some angle, but just something. It doesn’t even have to be anything specific: maybe just some doodle, weird pattern, it’s up to you! This helps me keep up the motivation to draw

I got first week on relearning, either messing around with stylus or photoshop, doodling something mostly to do small artsy pieces for pals like logos or "fancify" something. All while taking at least every second day to sketch out something more serious. Small or not, I've been sharing it, showin' it aorund. This part I did figure myself But the way Marc speaks, it's kinda inspiring, reinforcing what I know already or atleast I think I know. all of this is is soo good!! but for me i add 1 more thing its observing if u wanna make art try observing. not just about anatomy but ideas from life try to walk outside well indeed its hard since its the pandemic but when u buy groceries try to observe more stuff around u maybe u lack making backgrounds or clothing or people , u can observe from photos or real life itself ik its like looking reference but observing is more like making those thousand of reference to be put simplified inside ur mind. i mean sometimes when u make art u gotta take some piece from irl and that piece is what why observation is needed well at least for me. its good to use reference but sometimes u cant always look at reference, ref is good for helping ur foundation and structure but dont always put ref for everything well it depends too tho sometime it gotta need ref while some it might not need that much ref idk if he already talk about this or it might be the same thing he said in the video. i might have missed the part he talked about this if he did please reply

Hi Marc, I just wanna say thank you for uploading this video as I am currently someone who just graduated from art school, jobless, and struggling to get my technique right and creativity on check...This is very motivational and I hope to see more of these videos in the future

These tips are so true, especially about practice. It’s important to grow your roots in order to bare the fruit of your labor. Most artists think practice needs to be hours, but just 20 minutes a day can lead to big gains!

I'm self-taught, I picked up 3d posing tool so I could pose something that I can blindly trace over. Spent a year doing that, thought my art was great. Then watch your videos and after just a few days of trying out OBSERVATION, I quickly realized how massively stiff my art were. If only I allocated the time to learn the FUNDAMENTALS and UNDERSTAND instead of just following a ref, I would've been wayyyy way better. Thank you Marc!

I've just started to work as an artist, I thought that when I would finally get to the point of earning a salary from art (even though I'm just at the start of my career, so I'm not amazingly skilled or anything and I have so many things to learn to get ahead in this job) I would become a confident person. It's not like that at all! I'm stuck in the middle of the Dunning-Kruger effect curve and I question every single thing I do and feel like an impostor. I feel that I didn't really improve "much" in this year leading to me getting a job. I got a lot of work to do on myself, lol.

Dunning -Kruger effect was like a slap to the face. I thought my figure drawing was good until I joined a class that made us work on dynamic poses with limited time. Another point in the video I loved was talking about the professional artists. I unfollowed a ton of artists who made beautiful art but it was not in the field I wanted to go into. You're awesome for this video.

A tip I've found helps is to also look and follow artists whose work is not really your cup of tea, because you look at it more objectively rather than because you like the aesthetic and I think having that balance is important and you'll learn a lot even from art you don't necessarily enjoy. ☺️

indeed it is a golden tip, especially the one about " if your last year art sucks compared to what you can do now, you are doing fantastic" that really gave me a confidence boost, my skills over time in 1 year basically skyrocketed a bit as i did a leap towards the better by using just 2 arts for referance that learnt me about the importance of curves and stuff, referance really helps, thank you marc, you are awsome

I just found your channel recently and it feels like i have the door of my dreams right in the front of my forhead. Since I was little I want to draw portraits and character design for videogames, and im everyday trying to improve, change my techniques, my art style, i'm never in my confort zone. Sometimes I wonder when I will reach that thing that thing that I dream so much. But well, all I can do now is still imroving, get better and just dont stop dreaming and finding artists like you. You inspire me a lot, really :').

I absolutely feel your advice of ignoring social media fame Marc, it's easier said than done tho. Followers are really just a numbers but every time the follower count goes down and/or they don't interact that much with you anymore you can't help but feel anxious, thinking you must've posted something boring or offensive or anything. So you'll start to draw to pander people and not for your own sake of improving, which absolute sucks

Actually, I’m always more open to do something when it’s an assignment, like, I need to feel like there is a real need for it to be done, then I will put hours of work but when it’s something else, I just kinda forget.

Personally, I feel the whole "compromise" idea depends on what the artist's intentions are. To sell? Gain attraction? Etc.? Then, of course as you stated it would behoove them to want to try to appeal to more people.Regardless, I still think the artist's interests and desires should always be top priority. Especially if only done for fun/leisurely.

Beginner-intermediate artist here. I've been drawing for more or less 10 years, but I only started learning art theory and understanding what to do 2 years back. This video helps a lot, and I've even experienced some of these things myself. Thanks a lot for all the great content, Marc. Free tutorials and advice like is a big help to guys like me who can't do a full time art course.

Here's something I do to keep my art fun! Say if I study something that I may not really enjoy drawing, like hands. After I do studies and feel more confident, I'll make a fun project that involves a lot of hands. Turn the things you don't like drawing into a fun challenge!

I’m having a hard time to have fun with my art anymore. I just feel like I keep running in place and my practice is not helping. It’s really discouraging and I’m just disappointed in myself for not understanding or being able to excite basic art concepts. I just really don’t know what to do anymore. I don’t know if I’m practicing the right things anymore. But this video helped me a little bit and I know the only thing I can do is keep running the race even if people run pass me, or even if I think I’m running too slow, or don’t feel like it.It’s either that or quitting.

hello, you posted this a year ago so i hope you got better with this but regression and/or stagnation is a normal part of every learning process, sometimes there is moments where you are doing worse than before but it's normal, you reach sort of milestones where progress is slowed down because you already learned a lot of things and the next things to learn are a lot longer to acquire. The more you learn the less porgress are visible.

At this point I occasionally rewatch this video to keep miself motivated and continue on. Following your advice and sticking to one "mentoring" voice exclusively really worked for me

The dunning kruger effect, and the way you described it, reminds me of when I took my CPPS certification (Personal training cert) The instructor talked about "White belt mentality" The more you learn, the more you realize you don't know and should ALWAYS pursue mastery, but realize that mastery is impossible. Always learn, always grow, no matter how much you know

My turning point certainly was breaking out of my bubble and showing off my work on my twitter and my artist friends when I really improved a ton. At least felt like that. I did burn out at the start but I slowly got back into it by drawing small things like Pokemon (what I love) to get my motivation back :)

Hello Marc. I'd like you to make tutorials about painting in comic style in the same way you do, especially like in your digital inktober pieces. I'd be glad if you also put a certain focus on background textures, how to add grit, noise or subdue a bunch of details.

Another one is to learn the terms and definitions of the fundamentals and elements of art. If you have a hard time understanding and breaking down how artist created their piece. You're going to have a even harder time trying to recreate or even copy. So learn the basics and create a mindset of constant growth and learning. Because whatever stagnates dies so keep moving and keep working.

This video should be seen by ANY SINGLE artist because these are simple yet totally true steps! Thank you Marc for this morning motivation! Just a quick "technical" thing: your ending panel is often cutting your lasts words in the video, maybe you should add about 10 to 12 seconds of black screen at the end of your video so that doesn't happen :) Have a lovely day! I'm super happy that you are putting more time in creating youtube content lately, this is a noticed and well appreciated effort!!

This is my opinion, other people's artwork is theirs, it came from them, it is only something that they could have done, every line is a part of them so with this mindset I can be happy knowing that I could have my own while also taking what knowledge I can from the artist. Your art is yours and nobody elses, art is subjective, always be open to criticism and learning, but yeah this mindset has helped me temper myself.

Thanks for the tips, and for mentioning confidence! I think that's something a lot of beginner artists lack and they don't improve because they lack the motivation to try to be better when they see other great artists' work. Healthy competition always gives room for growth, so we should never put our own ego before our work.

This was such an inspiring video. I've been trying to pick up 3D modelling for a while now. I've done a few beginner's courses, as well as made a few simple objects based on references, but, like you said, I find myself getting discouraged by learning new things that open the floodgates to even more things I still need to learn. I haven't opened blender in a few months now because I was getting so discouraged by the massive gap between where I wanted to be, and where I am. Your comments about having the right mindset, self-awareness, and keeping expectations in check are exactly what I needed to hear. I'm going to open blender again tomorrow with a fresh mindset. Thank you, really.

I've been drawing off an on for most of my life. It was only within the last few months that I gave myself a project that I am enthusiastic about that I have been able to not only draw everyday but able to focus on the drawing. I used to struggle to focus on a drawing for 10-15 minutes. I can now focus up to an hour and a half. And I do notice little hints of improvement over the course of this project alone. such as my line control is getting better. I'm better able to discern colors and how to pick colors. And i'm learning the value of layers in art programs.

Thank you, Mr. Brunet. I'm quite thankful that I came across this video as I was trying to find that spark to help reignite my creative drive. It was your comment about burnout and art not being fun was the driving moment that made me realize where I was in my art. As it is with the quarantines and social distancing, I made the decision to reinvest back into my art again and this video brought a refreshing breath of life again to my longest love, art. Best wishes and I look forward to gleaning more insight from your videos.
