How to Architect

What does an architect do? An architect can perform many roles including design, specification writer, construction observation, ombudsman, and even in some cases construction, but for purposes of this discussion I would like to focus on design. According to one definition from my apple computer dictionary the architect is a person who is responsible for inventing or realizing a particular idea or project. Another definition states that an architect is a person who designs buildings and in many cases supervises their construction. Finally, Wikipedia’s definition works well. An architect is a person who translates a user’s requirements into a built environment. To summarize then, an architect, one; invents Two, design buildings. And three translate the users requirements into a built environment. In a way all three definitions fall under the category of design. For purposes of this discussion let’s talk about all three separately? First we know an architect Invents. An inventor creates something out of necessity that does not already exist. In a way every building, every house, every skyscraper, every thing architects create, if its original, is an invention. A building becomes something of an invention by virtue of the specific requirements of the client. It’s utility lies in its unique function for the person or people it is designed for. Second, we know an architect designs. To design is to plan with a specific purpose in mind. To me, designing implies a kind of thoughtful planning relative to a set of parameters. All kinds of things are designed after their invented. Vacuums, sneakers, printers, headphones, telephones, chairs, tables, silverware, and of course buildings. The architect designs the building after it’s conceived or invented. Thirdly, the architect is a translator in that they translate a users requirement into a built environment. When you first meet with an architect one of the first discussions is about the program. The program is essentially a description of everything that will be going into the building. If it’s a home, the program includes the number of powder rooms, bathrooms, bedrooms, how many car garage, etc… If it’s an industrial building the program includes machinery, offices, technology, etc… If it’s a skyscraper it includes, use, number of occupants, utility spaces, executive suites, number of floors, etc… In simple terms the architect takes the program and turns it into a building. So we see that while all three of these items, Invention, design and translation fall in under the category of design each is vital to the role of an architect. So if someone asks you what does an architect do? You know that to start with, they’re inventors, they’re designers and they’re translators. And that concludes the first part of our video series “so you want to be an architect”. I’m Doug Patt. See you next time.

Being an architect is so varied. It's boring, exciting and stressful... But there is no better feeling than to watch a building you designed rise up from nothing. You get to work with interesting people and some real assholes. The hours can be long but the same can be said about engineering and a lot of other professions. As far as money goes it can be good or average again it depends on your priorities in life. A year ago I made a choice to work for a developer and now earn more than most senior level professionals, the sacrifice has been the 'architect lifestyle'... But that's what you do when you have kids!

architects get pigeon holed, people think all we do is draw when in reality our job is incredibly complex and requires not just design but technical and project management skills. Add to that the fact clients feel they can haggle with our fees in a way they'd never think of doing with a lawyer or an accountant. That said, if you have a good business plan, it can be a decent career

VERY NICE! I remember being 17 (1991) when I decided to become an architect. My father was a C.E. which contributed, but it all began one day walking home from school. It began to rain, so to stay dry, I went into a new model home nearby. I looked around, and found it interesting. I picked up some floorplans and took them home. I got a few pages of dad's graph paper and just for fun, designed my own floorplan using ideas from the floorplans. So today, after a long, hard road, I am an architect.

architects still predominately work with their hands to design buildings - use pens and pencils on paper to draw schematic plans, build scale models of designs, and some, not all, like to carry a sketchbook to note random ideas. Since architecture revolves around buildings in reality, it's essential to realise the project as a physical item, not just something on a computer screen. Hence, if you want to buy a laptop for games, architecture won't be much of an excuse.

every tool you use to write , draw or even sing is a way to translate your brain language and brain ideas to a form that people and even you could understand .. and each tool have its own unique way to describing the ideas , no tool can describe the idea for 100% for sure but when you have as many tools as you can , you can extract your ideas from your brain more accurate and properly , hand drawing for architect is one of the most important tool to describe and extract the ideas from your brain , the lucky architects only who have this gift and if you don't have it practice your hand asap.

@BurningSilk: Architects design the way buildings look and work, but engineers calculate all the things you are worried about. As an architect you would know how to approximate almost exactly the dimensions needed for a construction to be viable, but civil engineers are the experts who do the math (structural calculations). There are also engineers for installations (plumbing, electrical, etc). They all work as a team with the architect overseeing the project.
@ilikeitwhatisit
@ilikeitwhatisit 14 лет назад
Yes, architects can also do interior design and furniture design. This is not to be confused with interior decoration, which deals with choosing decoration and utility elements for an existing space. Interior design deals with creating the actual space and elements in it. There are interior designers and decorators that are specialized to do exactly that and there is a lot to study and learn in these fields alone.

Aw, five years ago I used to watch these videos trying to convince myself I could become an architect, mainly because my father wanted me to be one. I entered university and by week two I WAS DONE with architecture. Gladly, I found my way and true vocation on Information Design. Now I have my bachelor's degree and couldn't be more happy with my profession. What I learned was that, sure, architecture shares some fields with design, BUT IT IS BORING. You barely get to draw, to create, you barely get to imagine. If you are considering anything like graphic design, visual communication, art, fashion, industrial design, or so...DON'T CONSIDER ARCHITECTURE. DON'T. I have never felt so distant from my desire to pick up a pencil and sketchbook more than on those two weeks. Seriously, I cried at nights wishing I was painting color-wheels like design students instead of drawing the layout for a room with a bunch of rulers for the third time.

right. manual drafting and sketching skills define an architect. CAD can be learned by a 5th grader. but the design comes from an experienced designer's mind. no harm done having as much skill as you can get. i think none can beat the aesthetic factor seen in a freehand drawing. still amazes. i smiled by how you did the letterings with the help of straight edge tool. beautiful, design wise. but my professor will spank me if i do that. lol. If you enjoy drawing and creating, architecture might be for you. And how much a job earns is a problem with everything. The most important thing is that you do something you enjoy, and when you do, you might potentially earn lots

If you've been thinking about something for so long, you might as well be on your way to become an architect! I'm 16 and I'm still trying to figure out what I want to do when I'm older.

I guess I've always made little house designs all the time when I was little... But I also had a searing passion for astrophysics, and now years later, after hell and high water I've had to revaluate my life priorities because I literally didn't know what I wanted to do with my life anymore. I just began uni to get a degree in physics but I don't know what to do anymore. Recently I came across a thing offered by my university that took my personality, interests, skills, etc. And spit out "architect" as the number 1 career result for me... I'm very optimistic right now about the subject, but after focusing on physics for so long I don't really know what to expect? That's why I'm praying and doing my research before I do anything else. Maybe God had a different idea for me all along? IDK but maybe I can decide later on that this is the perfect blend for my creative and technical sides...

*edit: some architecture programs are on Macs. All 3d modelling programs are on windows. This is coming from an arch student who has a mac and runs windows through bootcamp to use those programs

realistic? Just because CAD programs are used more often than not doesn't mean drawing or sketching is an obsolete skill. On the contrary sketching is extraordinarily important and can only enhance the architect's ability to convey ideas quickly and artfully to a client. Good luck running your own firm if you can't sketch decently. It's done, but not the norm. I'm sure you'll find plenty of videos on the internet showing architectural CAD drafting. This happens not to be that channel.

@Nightmonkey17 It's not that bad at all. The curriculum's ask for Calculus at the most. Some schools you can even slide by that and just take trig. It's not a big deal. HOWEVER, the more science and math courses and the more independent courses you take --like accounting and construction courses-- the more likely you'll be hired on. Architects are underrated as their 'job description' is A LOT more detailed than what most people realize.

If you believe that this is a guide on how to actually be an architect, then I question your analytical ability. It's information regarding the profession and is useful to people interested in the field and industry. These types of videos help people gain an understanding of a profession before they study it in depth.
