Thanks. I've been "road racing" with NASA for the past few years. HPDE actually, not competition. I am ready to step up to a competitive environment. I've been running my street car, a Dodge Challenger. Good power, very heavy. Have gone through brake upgrades, tire upgrades, and suspension upgrades, and have gone through 3 engines. So I finally am learning my lesson and trying to get a track-only car, that is lighter, perhaps easier to work on, and less heartbreaking should I mess it up. I bought a 1988 Nissan 300ZX. It has been a race car its whole life; never been on the street. Showroom stock first, then SCCA. I'm not clear about what classes it ran in SCCA. When I bought it, it was well used, with bondo on the quarters, and the front end was modified as the previous owner was trying to put a front intercooler and bigger turbo in it. I pulled his mods out, re-engined it, ripped out all the old wiring, and am rewiring the car, replumbing it. I've replaced the seat, harness, and steering wheel. Still need to add some type of fire suppression system. And the last few days I've been working with the Fuel Safe cell. Initially, I was trying to get the old foam out, as I don't know how old this cell is, I'd say at minimum 20 years and there is no evidence I can see of the foam being replaced. I cannot get the cover (access plate) off to get into the cell. I don't know if they sealed it with something, or it is just so old, or what. At this point I"m thinking replace the filters and see what happens, but my gut says that foam is going to go to pieces when I put fuel in what has been an Arizona dry cell. My head says pull it out and replace it, but as you mentioned, what I am seeing for prices is in the $1500 range and that is a lot of money for me... Any ideas?

I’m curious about the handling effects of the stock tank in the stock location (high CoG) vs the fuel cell aft of the rear axle causing a pendulum swing effect under braking and corner entry. We’ve retained the stock saddles-style tank on the BMW which is mounted underneath the rear seat in the car. Perfect location balance-wise and we get 1hr50mins plus out of it at most tracks we’ve been to so far. I do envy those additional two gallons a fuel cell would provide but I wonder what the effect to the handling would be. It’d likely be significant at high fuel levels behind the axle I think.
