@@barevids Hi Sam, The Evo 800.4D uses 8 TO-252 MOSFETs in the power supply and a single pair of TO-252 MOSFETs for each of 4 outputs. All are heavily defaced. I was going to go on a parametric hunt for something suitable but figured it couldn't hurt to ask you.

As someone who both designs and repairs circuit boards, I fully support right to repair. And I love this guys channel! Playing devils advocate for a moment, it is quite possible they are grinding the numbers off to protect their design, to make it more difficult for people to copy it. This is a somewhat common practice. Assume these guys created a design that they feel gives them an advantage in the market (cheaper to build, works better for same cost, etc..) For something as relatively simple as an audio amplifier, it would not be that difficult for someone in the industry to copy the design, or figure out their trade secrets, especially if they know all of the parts to use. Patents are often not a solution in today's world. Patents don't always deter manufacturers from other countries, and they're horribly expensive to defend, often so expensive that it doesn't make financial sense. And in today's global economy, you might just need patents in every country that your product might be sold into (or copied and sold into), plus the cash to defend your patent in each of those countries. Plus someone keeping a lookout in each of those countries for copies. Making it more difficult to copy by obscuring the identity of the parts might be a more effective, and more financially feasible way of deterring copies. It is very possible they are grinding the numbers off to prevent repairs, but at least as likely that they are doing it to make copying more difficult. Edit --> One more thought; maybe the parts they are using are copies of name brand parts, and they don't want anyone to know they are knock off parts.

Hey its almost like a car dealer selling a new car you paid for but they burned a few holes in seats it's totally unfair when you own that device in full price for them to modify chips that are not manufactured by sounddigital

Manufacturer should go after company's like that basically there copyrighting there own parts

@@modbox9560 no that's not true. It's more like Tesla not letting anyone else but themselves fix there cars. And if you sell your car they remotely remove autopilot from the car for the next owner. Doesn't make sense shouldn't be like that

Check for VCC voltage at the driver iC and also check them zener diode

Unfortunately repairing amps is FAR FAR more difficult if you don't have an oscilloscope. They make cheap handheld o-scopes that work well.

Ah crap, that could have taken out SO many parts, due to the way these amps use the 12v live... I'm afraid without seeing it here I wouldn't be able to say.

@@barevids The only issue is that if the masked chip is some sort of programmable chip, the VCC of 16V seems way too high, but there does seem to be a 5.6v zener close by that could be used to drop this to the usual around 5v for most micros. I can't be certain, without knowing the function of the IC. I quite often reverse engineer circuitry, as I repair electronic devices as a hobby (for people that I know), quite often reverse engineering the whole device if it's not too complex (takes quite a while though).

@@barevids wow, so that one problem you said could not be fixed! Anyways I swapped that chip with one from a 5 k and did not work. I guess I have a 3k watt paper weight.

Easy solutions better thermal contact to the heatsink, add fan to heatsink Medium solution turn down the bias Hard solution replace transistors for lower resistance higher efficiency models while keeping within circuit boundaries

yeah man, this one had resistors and bits removed and replaced 1000s of times while figuring things out. ill clear it up before it goes back :)

Hi, since you installed higher voltage lower capacitance caps, and these are just used for rail smoothing and supply, this will not have caused any damage to the rest of the circuit. As to why you got no sound, this was unlikely due to the wrong caps. Many amps will produce output with no rail caps present at all. However there are some exceptions.

@@barevids how could I diagnose the no sound issue? All the mosfets/rectifiers are still on the board. Can I test them while they're still connected to the board? Or is there anything else that would cause the output issue?

@Dave Micolichek I took it to a buddy of mine who repairs amps and he tested everything and came to the conclusion that the amps driver circuit (which is a very small "daughter board" off the main board) is faulty and needs to be replaced. Unless something else could make that board seem dead I'm assuming that's the problem. Any advice would still be appreciated. Thanks.

@Dave Micolichek The driver circuit board is covered in a black hard potting compound which makes any pictures of it pointless... any way to safely remove that kinda stuff and get to the actual repair?

Yes, but only if you are based in the UK. If not, you can find a technician local in your country.

Sounds like that could be related to heat, as a component gets hot it leaks. Once it's gone into protect, does turning it off and on again allow the amp to play again for 20mins? Or does it go straight to protect once again?

Hey buddy. That's a 10 ohm resistor. If that's dead then it means lots of other things are toast, namely drive ICs and buck converters. Send it in to someone who is experienced as theres high risk of making it worse.
