Interesting that you've been able to have it not overheat with 1080p 60 fps. I tried mine yesterday and got 2 hours and 45 minutes before it shut down.
i also have the z30 and want to use it as a facecam also ? so i need this dummy battery from the discription to stream and dont lose power of my camera cause mine looses power even with the usbc cable which is always connceted to it
I Jon, did you not have any issues with video latency? When recording audio on a mic direct to my computer the camlink video feed is half a second delayed compared with the audio.
Shockingly no, but half a second is crazzzzy long of a latency. I’ve been running it to the elgato into a usb 3 port and it’s been unnoticeable in terms of audio sync for streams or talking etc.
Question: the dummy battery you put in your bio says Canada only. Is there another one that will work and won’t damage the camera that I can get in the US? Awesome video man!
So there's no overheating? I've seen othe videos stating that it overheated for them after about 20 or so min. But they do not mention if they used a power adapter or not.
so i need the dummy battery to stream with the camera longer than one hour ? or isnt there a gurantee that it will charge so "fast" that it doesnt loose powere while using it ?
I wish it could “out charge” it’s battery usage. But from testing it doesn’t do that unfortunately. The dummy battery is really the way to go. I’ve accidentally left my camera on all night and the next night I got back to my chair and noticed it was still going strong 🤣😅
Thank you for this info! Your explanation was very concise! Have you got a suggestion on how to charge the battery other than plugging in to a computer?
Hi thank you! You can pick up an external charger, they’re pretty good. But if you absolutely need to charge your battery via the camera then attaching it to a wall outlet or computer is OK, not fast but it’ll work. Mind you that if you are trying record at the same time as charging keep in mind it will slowly lose charge.
@@jondoeslifestuff No, I don’t need to use the camera when charging I just can’t find an exact answer to which charger to purchase….other than the clunky Nikon charger. Have you found an alternative solution for your Z30?
I'm using the 16-55mm. It's "OK" with lowlight. I have a gridded keylight blasting me with light from 2 ft away. Settings are as follows: 16mm F5 ISO1000
hey! I don't get the battery thing? lol How do you connect? Right now I hate that I need my computer or a usb plug in for the camera and anytime it dies while recording, I have to go charge it there
So the battery adaptor actually goes into the camera like a regular battery, but it also plugs into the wall socket to use that as power instead. Yeah that’s why I don’t use the standard battery for streaming and such.
Hey bro, I want to start streaming but I would like to stream in the in the street, how would that work with this camera, can you make a video about or comment on this pleaseeeeeee!!
Hey man! To start, great video, but having an issue with my Z30, in that I can't get rid of the exposure info and other things around the frame, and I don't see anyone mentioning this out of the box so I'm stuck. I've unchecked all the boxes under "playback display options" but to no avail. Did you run into this while setting up? Thanks for the great video!
@@jondoeslifestuff That seems to remove some but not all of the info. Like the red framing outline, but the battery level, ISO and more are below my video, I've tried cropping them out but my resolution is reduced.
Hi, thank you for the help. I had one issue with Nikon Z30. I am a teacher and using the camera for recording my lectures. I am using the Nikon Webcam utility and OBS. I am facing a lag in the recording. Can I do anything to resolve it right away, or do I need to purchase the items you have mentioned in the description
You can run a USB-C to it with an external battery. But it isn’t “infinite power” it’ll slowly go down while the battery is installed. But it will last much longer for sure.
@@jondoeslifestuff hi Jon, I wanted to test it last night with USB-C and HDMI on my Macbook Pro but I ran out of ports, because maybe you need a high power delivery port to be able to keep the charge (or charge). I do know that the battery needs to be inside otherwise the camera won't work plugged via USB alone. I streamed a couple of weeks ago for 1 1/2 hours with a Nikon Z5, and kept full charge this way so again, not completely sure but my logic would say yes. I do like and used to use dummy batteries with the DSLRs and they just work, I checked the Raeisusp (the brand I used with the EN-EL15s) EN-EL25 and it's USB powered but comes with the adapter, so its more versatile.
@@Willymaze yeah definitely needs to have a battery in there because it draws from it at the same time. Yeah that may work but unsure exactly how long it would last. Let me know and I can add it to suggestions for other products.
I find that odd because I haven't come into that problem since I got it. Couple things you could do is mount a computer fan to the camera. OR Ulanzi is releasing a camera fan adapter that you could place on the back. What are your recording settings?
Bro im total noob in camera. Just wanted know whether we can charge the camera with included charger while recording or streaming more than an hour? Also pls tell whether it has clean hdmi output?. My usage mostly live stream to instagram, so far only used iphones for that purpose.
Hey hey! While it’s recording? Unfortunately it doesn’t charge as fast as it uses power. If you pick up some of the things I mentioned you probably could do a livestream from your PC or Mac. Unfortunately it isn’t HDMI to HDMI, too small of a form factor to see stuff like that to be honest. Hope this helps.
@@jondoeslifestuff thanks for ur reply. Unfortunately there is no dummy battery available in my country (India). I wanna stream for 2 or 3 hours. Any other available or should I look someother camera?
Yeah need a camlink or similar capture device for best results but if your just using 1080p really not worth getting you can buy a normal dslr that can do 1080p for half the cost.
You don't even need the extra battery adapter you can keep the camera plugged in via USB and it will stay on just plug in the USB C to a fast charger or even a 3.0 USB port just so it can get adequate power and then plug in the HDMI and it won't turn off
It isn't infinite power though, but it definitely does make the original batteries last very very long. If I want to stream for 8-14 hours.... I can't rely on the USB-C being enough.
@@jondoeslifestuff i never had it on that long but usb c has lasted me 1 to 2 hrs ive used it and still had a full charge so doesnt seem to drain when its plugged in to a 3.0 port and i keep it on 4k not sure if that uses more power than 1080p.
@@jondoeslifestuff I tried the usb-c to usb-c cable that comes with macbook air m1 and it worked.. streamed for about 2h no issues the cam is fully charged :D
Quick question… I bought all the products in this video, however in OBS when I select the capture device, the screen is blank. Even when selecting the Nikon software same story, still no camera. Now I can get it to work using usb C but it avoids the capture card all together. Is there another software I need to install to use the capture card?
I also have elgato camlink also connected with hdmi cable but camera Z30 picture disappears after 5 to 10 seconds again then I have to press a head as if it goes into quiet mode :(
@@jondoeslifestuff wow that great news - question: the battery apparently goes from full on the indicator to one bar very fast, if I kept using it right to the end (battery empty) would all my files be ok. Im just hoping I can use the camera up until it powers off because the batteries are so small
@@markshirley01 Honestly the battery isn't that bad. I shot a 9 hole golf vlog + B-roll with one battery. The only thing that I can't confirm would be if you're recording something and it dies on you. You may lose that one file. Otherwise you should be fine. Just keep a couple batteries on you to swap. Or the alternative could be to plug an external battery via USB-C.
@@jondoeslifestuff After watching a ton of videos it has become apparent - for streaming you can use a Camera - for daily conference/work calls you need a dedicated webcam.
Excellent job! I will be trying all these ideas. We have RU-vid channel about guitars, guitarists, all things guitars coming from the Tulsa, OK area (if you get a chance please check it out). You can see on my episodes where Ive been trying to use the new Nikon z30 and it doesn’t look as good as I thought. And, it has been overheating during recording (could be the SD card etc; I’ll try running the battery power pack like you suggested). I’ve learned to have 2-4 camera sources going (iPhone, iPad, usb HD camera, etc) during the recording! Instead of just the Nikon. I will subscribe and I appreciate your suggestions. Thanks, Mac (host of GuitarsOK). ✌️😎🎸🤩
I want to use the Z30 with Zoom without a Camlink. What is the best resolution / fps I can get without lags? Are you streaming on Mac? Contrary to Sony ZV-E10 the Nikon requires software installation to use it as webcam, right? Sorry for the many questions…really appreciate your video.
Without a cam link? Your best resolution is equivalent to 720p with 0.4s delay. To use it as a basic webcam yea just use the USB-C in the box and download the Nikon software, it’s very simple. Quality isn’t great using USB-C and for best results you should use the HDMI and a cam link.
@@jondoeslifestuff i use the Automode of the Camera and its about 90min from cold start. The Resolution is 1080p 60. I have it connected to a elgato link 4k
My obs and camera app are displaying my nikon z30 at 30fps only. Both the camera and obs are set to 108060 and it still is stuck. I also do have the hdmi cable and the little hdmi to usb connector aswell. Any idea why this is happening?
The vari angle screens were only put on Nikon budget hobbyist bodies. Nikon wasn't sacrificing build quality and weather sealing so people could look at themselves. The other reason is instead of adding it, they went wireless so you could use your smartphone as a wireless external monitor, tablet or computer. They've also had them as long as everyone else. If you want to ever do a retro review on a camera no one has done. Find a Nikon Coolpix 8400. 8mp variable angle screen, 24-85 f/2.6 power zoom. It actually had something modern cameras still don't have, a magnifying viewfinder for the LCD screen.
Thank you for your video Jon, I had the same delay issue with my D7500, and I thought it was because of the camera because I was using the usb cable, I was about to upgrade to an usb-c camera thinking it would be better or maybe I wouldn't have that delay anymore but thank to your video I realized that it is not the solution either, I guess Nikon is not built for that. I will figure out how to do it with a capture card or usb. That would be a good video for you to make as well.
Is OBS the way to go? I am still trying to figure out my content but am happy to have upgraded to a Nikon Z30 and a bunch of other things I probably didn't need now but I got them LOL.
I want to do live streams on FaceBook. Not long ones, mostly about 15-20 minutes but on a rare occasion up 45-60 minutes. Is that possible with the Z30?
Honestly that part really doesn't matter as long as the overall exposure is alright for YOU. 1/60 (because I stream for 30f), Aperature.. whatever I feel like usually around 4 or 5.6 (I don't care for blown out backgrounds, that's silly), Iso anywhere between 800-4000, grain really doesn't matter especially when a majority of your image is scaled down to something very small for the most part. 1080p is fine for a scaled down image as well. CPL filter cuts a lot of that skin shine (would highly recommend) and a VND if you're exposure needs to come down and you don't want to be messing around with ISO too much.🤙
Hey appreciate the video. I've followed your steps but running into issues. I'm using the camlink but I still can't the z30 to go to 1080 in obs. I've tried everything. Any ideas?
Hey John thanks for the great video. I have a question and maybe you can help me out. I have the Nikon Z30 with the lenses that came with the kit. My issue I am having is my overheating issues while trying to stream at 1080p60fps. After about and hour or so of streaming the cam decides to shut off do to overheating. I have the exact same setup you have down to the same dummy battery and elgato camlink. I just dont know if it is a certain setting i am not using or if my camera is actually messed up. If you wouldnt mind chiming in or maybe showing me your current camera settings that would awesome thanks.
Good morning! I'm assuming you have all the same plugs and are plugging it into a usb 3.0 slot as well - so the next thing I would check is your timeout setting on your Nikon. Because you don't actually press record on the camera, try setting it to NEVER timeout. Can't remember exactly what the name of the setting is but have a dig through it -- I'm just at the office right now :P. Does it mention anything about overheating before / after?
@@jondoeslifestuff I did shut off the auto timers. I’ll have to pay attention more to the overheat warning. I think it may of been because I was using auto iso and in a darker environment the iso was at 9000.
@@K3rby woahhh that’s crazy high. Yeah 1000 max on this little guy and pump some lights on you or if you don’t like the harsh light bounce it off a wall in front of you. I should do a video of my stream setup.
@@jondoeslifestuff That’s what I am attempting to do. I am super new to mirrorless cameras and photography in general. So taking a peak at your camera settings would be a great video. Especially since there aren’t really any out there for the z30.
@@jondoeslifestuff ok, i appreciate this. we are currently using usb-c only, and been struggling with fps issues. found your video and instantly ordered these parts. thanks again
@@jondoeslifestuff i hate to bug you about this, but did you make a video about good AUTO FOCUS settings for streaming? Because that is something thats driving us nuts as well. Just constant focusing.
@@kybourbon2422 No need to worry my dude, throw it into AF-C and it'll do all the work for you. Be sure to make sure your lens is off of Manual focusing mode. If it doesn't have a switch for it... then no need to worry! I'll make a short this weekend in under 1 minute the things I like about the camera and should help clear up ANY confusion.
None of the items in description can be shipped to my area, I was able to find a different micro hdmi to hdmi but the other two is proving to be rather difficult to get my hands on
I have the Z30 and I’m frustrated. It advertises as being able to record while charging however if you’re charging with USB-C the record function is disabled. Did you run into this issue too?
@@jondoeslifestuff Interesting. Whenever I try to record while its connected to my laptop it grays out the record feature and disables the ability to record. Maybe I have a dud. Did you use the cord the camera came with or are you using a UC-E25 USB Cable?
@@lcrews Don't think you have a dud, because if you're trying to stream / webcam you don't actually press record on the camera. Make sure its idle time is infinite. So it's probably thinking it's using the laptop to record and having some weird issue that way.
While doing video interviews with Canon SL2 + Elgato Cam Link I ran into the issue of autofocus box staying on-screen and actually be recorded into the shot. Found out turning off AF is the only solution. Looking at this Z30, do you know if there's a way to stay in AF and remove any/all markers from the screen during streaming? Sorry, very specific question here haha
switch the camera mode from photo to video and it will turn on clean hdmi out (i think i saw your face in a post on reddit about the z30 about this issue?)
I bought the Z30 to use with Streamyard. I downloaded the Mac driver and im using usb but 75% of the time I try to do a stream I cant get an image from my camera. It just shows a black screen in SY where my image should be Im trying a SOnyZ10 now and it connect perfectly everytime. I still own the Z30 though and wish I could figure out the problem
