Hello everyone, another soap review for you today! This time I'm reviewing my Soleseife cold process soap, made with fresh seawater from North Stradbroke Island, off the coast of South East Queensland. In this video I also take a look at an example of DOS - Dreaded Orange Spots - which happen from time to time (for a number of reasons) in handmade soaps. I'll talk more about DOS in future videos and social media posts.
Here is the link to the original video • 🌊 Making Soleseife - S... and if you would like to try my recipe, you can find the full details including the essential oil blend I used, in the video description box of that video.

Hi Elly! I love your videos and love the way you talk. I have learnt soap making from you and I regularly make 25% super fat coconut oil soap as this is easily accessible in India. It’s a wonderful soap. Can you make videos on natural colours used in soaps and different types of swirls which can be made in soap. Thank you 🙏🏼

Your soap reviews are always interesting Elly. This looks to be a really nice soap. I am interested in natural colourants also even though I love the look of no colour plain soaps. I made your laundry powder recipe with my 'dud' batch and it turned out amazing...I was stunned at how good it is. Thank you! 😍

Wonderful and extremely educational video!! brilliant idea the sea water!!! I will ask my cousin who is a winter swimmer to get me some now that the sea is clean and I will try it with sunflower oil, coconut and olive oil to test the hardness. My mother was from Sparta (Greece - that Sparta will King Leonidas etc) and the old ladies when they made soap in big cauldrons (over open fire if you please!!) they added a handful of salt and they always said "Be hard as cement" and then when they have poured the soap in the wooden mold they put on top 2 sticks of olive tree wood in the shape of the cross to guarantee that the soap will cure properly!! Greek legends!! Ha! ha! my contribution to your wonderful tips!!

Maybe thats another video idea lol. 🤔

Hi Elly Thank you for all the videos you uploads. I’ve learnt everything I know from you and got into soap making bexause of you. I made 4 baches of soap now. The first one was over 6 months ago and i kept one for myself which is still good. I then made 2 batches and after airing them for 6 weeks i realised they were developing small orange spots on one side. All the oils are still fresh and i keep then i a cool and dry place but when i smelt the area had the orange spot it smelt like a go e off oil! I kept moving them during the airing period. I then made a 100% coconut oil 5 weeks ago (bought the coconut oil 2 to 3 months ago) and the top part is going yellow and has the same weird smell. It’s only been 5 weeks. Do you know what i’m doing wrong? I can’t figure out why my soaps are going off so quickly. I even added grapefruit seed oil to them (4 drops per 350g oil). I also just purchased vitamin E oil. I have no idea how much vitamin E oil is sufficient for a batch for example 840g oil to extend the shelf life of the oils. Could you please point me to the right direction? Thank you very much
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking 3 года назад
Oh no! Sorry to hear that Ellie. Could it be the oils you are using? Some are more prone to DOS than others. Elly, love your teaching. Your voice is so calming. This is such a lovely soap. I wish I was near a lovely ocean like you are. Have you ever tried citric acid in your soap? I read it helps avoid DOS and soap scum. I started using it, but I worry about my math in figuring it out. So far so good...I think. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking 3 года назад
Hi, and thank you :) No, citric acid is not suggested to prevent DOS. Rosemary oleoresin extract (ROE) is the only additive I know of that is recommended to prevent DOS, though I've never used it. You can read more about it here: classicbells.com/soap/ROE.asp

I'm surprised the scent lasted so long: I'm getting tired of ESSENTIAL OILS as they disappear after curing in my tropical climate. Is it the salt scent that remained?
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking

They should not fade if you use EO's that last well in soap. This soap scent lasts very well.

@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking Thanks for responding. I always include the more lasting base notes, which is why I think CLIMATE has something to do with it. I made a beautiful batch of lavender-lemongrass soaps 2 months ago and may have to sell them as unscented soon. I don't know, maybe my local suppliers are (secretly) mixing their EOs with carrier oils. I live in the Caribbean and importing is expensive!
