This looks really good. Now we can experience what the crew sees from the cab. Plus we can check out the trackside equipment, like switches and lights better. Not to mention the animals and vehicles on the roads. The autumn colors are fantastic and they are more striking from this angle than from the air. I think narration would be good here too. A few information here and there wouldn't ruin the calmness of the video. I think a mid-week (Wednesday or Thursday) upload would be fine. I'm sure this will be a popular series quickly. I'm definitely looking forward to the future episodes. Great job as always Dan.

Thanks a lot Z! Yes and I think when something does come up to be seen I will slow down/ stop to inspect and take a closer look at things or fly high above to see a wide view of the land and come back down again in a seamless fashion. I agree with narration I think there has to be some throughout if something needs explaining but a mix of that and captions throughout probably.

I liked this short video. This is an effective way to see what the train crew sees as they travel along the tracks. We will also get a chance to see the scenery and see the change of the seasons along a section of track. Wednesday could be the day that you upload these videos.

Thanks so much Thomas! I think this series will be a go. This didn't get nearly as much attention as normal videos but they are so easy and quick to make that it's worth it. I too was thinking Wednesday maybe. That or Tuesday.

Your drone work is some of the best i have ever seen. For alot of the shots it takes a lot of planning and pure skill on the sticks. These intros are awesome! You could even use them for outros.

I hope this format gets enough support to keep it going. The train's eye view of little used and abandoned routes in particular are interesting to me. I dare say even ones that no longer have track on them but the old grade is still detectable and flyable. Captions or voice; doesn't matter to me.
@TheRailfanDan
@TheRailfanDan 4 месяца назад
Thanks Scott I think it will be a go. I can think of a couple of old lines now gone where the grade is still visible and thought that could be a good idea too.

Hello Dan, I would imagine that long simulated cab rides from one route as well as compilations of best of from several routes would be welcome. Also as a calming background in the living room or for falling asleep. (Similar to the well-known “fireplace videos” from old times) I imagine simulated driver's cab videos about disused railway lines, overgrown tracks and dilapidated railway bridges to be very impressive. Best regards from Austria

Thank you for your efforts. I "stumbled" onto your channel last week with watching the BNSF Oregon Trunk video. Wow!! Wow!! 👍👍 Part of why is the complete "package" of the video with the drone shots, scenery, editing, music, your narration, the captions, etc. My 2 cents on your questions: 1) since you are the one doing the work, you get to decide whatever even if it isn't my preference! (I've seen comments on other YT channels of people "expecting" _______ without any understanding they paid nothing to the creator.) 2) I think you do not need to post weekly, you can post less and/or as you have something. Timing doesn't matter to me. I see it in my feed when a new video releases. 3) I think captions on location, direction of travel is helpful. Though I'm fine with voice overlays too. (I enjoy the music you choose and your voice overlays have been cool too.) 4) videos by season, topic, location, or any grouping that makes sense. For example, these generally fall shots with the colors are amazing. 5) I think the height can vary some more. I see people say engineer view, but I think some of the shots were lower than that. I appreciate sometimes seeing the "big picture", so there could be an overshot view before/after/in-between, etc. I'd be fine with just above train height shots too. 6) same location both ways is 👍 too. if you could just "say" which direction. I see different things when I travel a different direction on the same route. It can be cool to catch things I missed the first time. Thank you again!!

Thanks a lot I'm so glad you stumbled upon my channel! I agree with pretty much everything you've said and many are giving similar advice about height. Flying up high when there is something to be seen and then coming back down low again in a seamless fashion which I just tried out a couple of days ago. It works really well.

I love videos of rail cars/speeders they are very relaxing...but 99% of them all have one thing in common..."tunnel vision", they set their camera in a fixed position and all "we" see is straight ahead...we don't get to see what they see. I love your idea of the drone view and think there are great possibilities and look forward to "seeing" what you come up with...so my only advice would be..."look around" just like you would if you were actually there...add your great music choices, and on screen captioning, and I believe you will have a whole new avenue for all of us to enjoy!!!

Nice work, scenic, and almost memorizing with good choice of music compliment. Much like your other drone work from the higher perspective, this does add to the value of your work. Thought is to add a sample to the regular train videos you make of the unique spots and then compile into a longer length separate presentation. Maybe slow the drown some, this video is for scenic beauty and right now is kinda fast to appreciate that part.

So after reading the posts up until now; I would have to agree with most everyone here and echo some of what they are saying. Having such a viewpoint is very unique and extremely awesome here on RU-vid, and would highly encourage you to build from this platform. Some recommendations however: first off, I'm not so sure if the voiceover is the best option here, as I think the end goal is more of scenery and ambience is likely more of an end goal. So may wanna go for subtexts or even descriptions in the description. Secondly, I think music is a key component to the ambience of the video as well, and should be weighed along with each post too. Softer music, like what you have here might be best, unless necessary, like in a dramatic scene, say an viewpoint arises. Third; I would prolly take the drone at a slower speed (in some cases much slower even) so that you can grab as much of the scenery as possible. It can also give the view a better feel for track condition. Oh, and if there's something cool alongside of the tracks, say and old signal foundation or catch fence stuff, that you can stop and investigate those things while describing it in subtexts. (Which reminds me of some EPIC thoughts I need to find a way to relay to you off RU-vid for you to check out!!!). Fourth thought would be to not post each week, but maybe biweekly or something so as to not overwhelm yourself or beat down the areas you explore too quickly. Take your time with this and get some good, worthwhile footage built up, and slow drip it out to the world. I think it would add to the excitement. Fifth. I love the idea of you running along the tracks for a while, and then fly up to a set of cars or something cool, and just look at the details of the cars. There are some really neat things that you can discover with a quick inspection of them, and I think other railfans, along with model railfans, would appreciate the extra time spent looking at things like that. Last thought for now would be to continue to play around with the lighting and weather. I could only imagine a low-light, slow run along the tracks, and then come around a corner to see the fading light reflecting on the tracks, or better yet, a buck and some doe crossing ahead. Also, try running the drone along the tracks at an extremely slow speed with a thunderstorm in the distance. THAT would be dramatic af. Anyway, keep up the awesome work my friend, and I look forward to me great videos as always!

Hey Mike thanks for so much advice that is helpful! I agree with much of that especially slower speed. I filmed these originally with a faster pace of video in mind but from here on out it will be slower. Also for sure flying high when there is something to see and coming back down low again in a seamless fashion works really well.

What a great idea! I watch some other train sites like LORIROCKS and RAIL RELAXATION. There strictly cab views. Can be boring at times when there's not much to see. Just like driving on the interstate. They did do one or two videos with a chase drone...those were the best. They should have used more drone chase shots because it was a very scenic area. A mix would be perfect. Your video on the Palouse area in Washington I would use an example> Fantastic drone shots but I was curious what the cab shot would look like in the same area. Those other sites have a preview and description at the start. The one has a small non-intrusive map in the corner. What may work is a short voice narration at the start. A quick who,what,where kind of thing like you've been doing. The vid itself could be broken down into descriptive chapters with an option to have captions off or on. Lots of those great drone chase scenes with a sprinkling of cab views and ground points of view when needed. You always select great music. I'm looking forward to this! I think if you check out those sites you'll have a better idea. Glad you asked for feedback. I know what I would like to see but suck at describing it. You have a great site...now it will be even better!

Love this. But you should never ask anyone for their opinions or suggestions. You do that and suddenly everyone becomes an expert! That being said, I got some expert advise for you... a narration at the intro is fine, but use captions to show locations. It would better if each section was much much longer. But something tells me you can't due to range limitations. Also, it would be fun to "sneak up" on the back of a train and follow him for awhile. But, they might take a dim view of that probably. At the end of the day, however, it is YOUR gig, and whatever you do or don't do is ultimately YOUR decision, and we're all going to enjoy them, no matter what. Thank you for a new fun, and refreshing perspective. P.s. I don't care what day of the week you upload them.
@TheRailfanDan
@TheRailfanDan 4 месяца назад
Thank you Michael! I do see your point but at the same time it is all you fans who have made me what I am and I believe you opinions matter too. But yes sometimes that can result in negativity as well. I was thinking the same thing: Narration at the beginning and end with caption in between. Maybe some narration in spots where something might need a bit of explanation? I too think it would be fun to fly up along the backside of a train. That would be a fun challenge!
