Julie Foudy has blossomed into one of the most knowledgeable, insightful, and eloquent commentators to ever call soccer matches. I always love it when she is covering a match. If she wants it, there will be a prominent position for her within the U.S. Soccer Federation or FIFA itself.
EA’s early soccer game commentary was bad though, and poor Julie was the color commentary on FIFA 2000 on PlayStation. Whoever wrote her script did her a great injustice. I love her commentary on tv!
indeed not I can always remember how big their popularity was in one Sports Illustrated Kids issue there was a whole trading card collection of them in caricature style I think Foudy was in a firefighter costume or something as far as I know.
Excellent retrospective of a groundbreaking team. USA dominance in women's soccer started with these fantastic women, and it should never be forgotten.
I have had the fortune of seeing some of sports' greatest moments. The 1980 Miracle on Ice. The Ohio State University 2015 National Championship run. The 2016 Cavs coming back from 3-1. But nothing brings a tear to my eye more than this amazing group of pioneers. 99ers. The. Best. Team. EVER!!!
I was at the Chicago game and it was like a video game, they were scoring goals so quickly I went to get beer and missed two goals. I don't think people still, do not understand the importance of this team and our women. As a soldier I've been around the world some and I've gotten to see how much of the rest of the world treats women. It isn't good. The fact that our women not only compete, but dominate says something about us as a culture and people. The importance of this cannot be overstated. In other countries women are treated only marginally better than goats, our women compete with the hearts of warriors and if you compare their game ( all women's games) versus the men's you'll notice how the men dive and carry on like babies to get calls and the women do not. I like watching women's games more. I wish those women would read this and know how much I appreciate their efforts and how grateful I am that they represent our nation to the world.
Thank you for that heartfelt and illuminating comment, john Q. I also enjoy watching the women, too. We're now right in the midst of another Women's World Cup, with the USA favored again. I won't miss a game. GO USA!!!
I’m a Scot and was living in Canada at the time. This was an awe inspiring tournament and it cemented my love for the women’s game. Watching how the US comported themselves, their spirit, tenacity, and drive impressed the hell out of me. That’s why I’m here at this time reliving that tournament. The 2019 finals just wrapped up with a US victory. It was easily the best WWC so far. The level of play from all countries just gets better and better but the American women are without a doubt the class of the world. So congratulations USA! Keep inspiring women’s soccer.
Special thanks to Foudy for shooting this footage in the days before the Selfie Age, and to the team for sharing it with the world. 99ers still inspire!
ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YJdHgtiIKFc.html , Because they know USA didn't win it fairly, goalkeeper fouled at penalty shot by stepped up too much and referee pretending did not see it. Header shot by China in ET 10' might be a goal already if VAR available at the time.
Amazing group I remember watching this World Cup and I don’t even think they got paid they did this for the love of soccer and they followed their dreams I have a lot of respect for that team of 99 they are very humble and nice to see them together again
The other USWNT crops with Hope Solo, Abby Wambach, Carli Lloyd, Alex Morgan, Megan Rapinoe, Rose Lavelle, etc. will still help the USWNT win titles down the road, but they won't have the same consistent class and humbleness as the 1990s USWNT's.
The best thing was there were no smartphones, the team bonded and was much more together. I miss 1999 it was a great year in my life. I was 18 and these group of Women introduced me to female soccer. This USA team made waves around the World. Special.
The chemistry friendship and bonding between this team was amazing and they had a lot of fun too was only 4 at the time so obviously I wasn't old enough to understand and watch this
I remember it like it was yesterday watching this game in the kitchen on a hot summer's Iowa afternoon. In my opinion the second greatest sports moment in United States history. 1980 us hockey team would be number one in my opinion as far as greatest sports moments.
I am here ..after 2019 world cup, France, final, US 2 - 0 Niederlande... still emotion to me... USWNT represents not just US but the rest of the world where they inspired not just women but also to those individual who never give up and dare to dream and shine.
I first watched this years ago and it pointed out something I've come back to recurrently ever since. In Brandi Chastain's words and also her coach's, about taking the last penalty to win it. That Brandi had probably taken that penalty 1,000 times in her head before. We all do as kids growing up in any soccer-mad country. But I can only think of 2 people that have actually had the opportunity to do so: Brandi and Fabio Grosso of Italy in 2006. It's unique and special to me to see that even if just for a few people, sometimes childhood dreams can become true.
Female Beach Volleyball players and Gymnasts wear super skimpy outfits that barely leave much to the imagination. Brandi exposes her sports bra and some people put up a fuss. Unbelievable.
Why why haven’t i seen this before. I didn’t get into women’s soccer until last maybe a few years ago. And more seriously until last year, but I’ve fallen in love with the past and current U.S. teams. They are a true inspiration. I’ve come to truly admire their dedication and warrior spirits. 99ers thank you for everything. 4th Star baby !!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thanks to these girls, now ladies, I was able to have a wonderful relationship with my daughters through soccer. Their impact was so, that my first daughter is named Mia. She has big cleats to fill. Thank you ladies. You’ll always be remembered.
The fact that going into my senior year in high school, I remember showing up to a house where my gf and her soccer players (from my high school) friends were at, and they were excited as they had just witnessed something great. I was so non chalant about the situation. Little did I know that I would be so influenced by these group of athletes as a college and pro football (american) player, as a high school teacher and as a high school coach. The chemistry and role playing by each member, shows what talent alone is not enough. I now I am a fan of the program, I stop my day for a world cup match, or an olympic match; and thats because regardless of who the players are, the standard of excellence has endured 24 years later. What a group of remarkable human beings. Thank you for all the thrills. GO USA!
I am almost 15 and my mom was pregnant with me durning the 99 World Cup my mom watched the World Cup so when it came time to name me they went through the whole women's roster pairing up different names the two they were desiding on where Mia Michelle or Brianna Nicole and they went with Mia Michelle. But if I was a boy I would be named Anthony James the coach (I think)
I kinda hate how Julie says old bags for da scene where Wambach, Morgan and Rampone all meet together wit Foudy, Hamm and I believe Chastain, those three athletes and three current should all never call themselves old they represent America in a truly positive way no one can ever forget.
Still the most memorable moment in football for me. Above Herny's goal at Leeds (am an Arsenal fan) Above anything Zidane, Ronaldo, or Messi can ever do. Maradona is the only person who has provoked such a reaction from an entire country. RESPECT
from 2:29-2:34 when Julie begins looking around and closing her eyes I'll bet there were tears somewhere and she thought here I am again I was part of something timeless.
MrTommyg024 Very good point... have you ever questioned why the U.S.A. Women's National Football set up is so good... As an Englishman I am envious, and hope our National Football Association would endeavour to copy it.
David Cummings Can't say I'm a huge expert on it, but a lot of people will tell you the people behind US Soccer started getting serious EARLY ENOUGH about a USWNT in the '80s to create something lasting and big while the USMNT are still trying to catch up to the rest of the world.
Thanks for that, I think we = England are 10 years behind the the USA Womens football set up. Don't you = the USA think its embarrassing and pathetic that we = England/the F.A., ... the Country that invented Football are trying to emulate the USA even though Football is in the lower preferences of the U.S As sporting hierarchy, I know you North America call it the 19 century outdated name of soccer = the English Upper Class shortening of Association Football. All the best Dave
+David Cummings it's because in the USA, we have a big talent pool to chose from for womens soccer. Compare that to the males in the usa who's first sports they want to play when they are kids, is either american football, basketball, baseball, or hockey. Soccer comes in about 5th in terms of sports that male athletes pick here. We have lots of academies to train the women and start when they are little. Helps that we started way early in the 80s as well when we got a national team.
I agree with the premise of what you have said, however... some points to clarify 1, The world Name for the World Game is FOOTBALL. 2, Your silly grid iron game, comes from the game of Rugby named after the southern english town when Football split and rugby came about when William Webb Ellis stopped kicking the ball, instead he picked it up and ran with it. Look at the two Code games of Ruby Union and Rugby League pitch especially league in regard to your silly grid iron game... pitch markings goals and the oval ball are all very similar... So in reality It should be called American Rugby!.... do some research and you will see that I am right.
Great documentary, as a Englishman I am jealous of the U.S.A. "Football" set up as females have had equal support/funding since the 1960s, that's why you are world class today!. We "England" have lot of catching up to do, as our "Male" Football Association took control of women's football in 1993, (they banned women's football from 1921-1971=50 years of sexism) were getting there! to conclude... The World Name for The World Game is FOOTBALL!.
David, here on youtube is a vid called Dare To Dream. It documents this women's team of 1999 and their fight for funds for women's soccer from the US Soccer Federation. They have never had equal support/finding from the Federation.
Thanks for that, (I will watch it) however I was aware of a law in the US (mid/late 60s) of gender equality in any state funding...I assume the documentary you mentioned would have had this premise. To end...The World Name for the World Game is FOOTBALL!
charlize841 Just watched it charlize841 (thanks to you) very good documentary I was shocked at the lack of funding, given what I said before. On a positive the USA Women "Proved themselves" and they have earned the funding...given my situation (an England's Women's Team Supporter) "WE" have a lot of catching up to do... Good having communication with you
David Cummings LOL..oh don't even get me started on this...yes, it's FOOTBALL! and it is played on the PITCH. The US might, eventually, get on board with the pitch thing, but soccer is never going to be thrown out. In the US, football is a game where the ball is thrown. It is why I love living in the US...a place of such logic. But soccer or football brings up Shakespeare's, "A rose...." thing, I love it no matter what they want to call it.
May I call you Charli ?...I have raised this issue on similar posts...American Football fans (misinformed people) don't know, or choose not to know, that their game comes from when our original game of Football. The game split into two different game's when the ball was pick up and ran with in the southern English town of Rugby...hence the game of Rugby!. That game (Rugby) split into two similar game's slightly different rules (1) Rugby Union (Ruggah) played by upper class people, in the midlands and southern England.(2) Rugby League played by northern England working class people. That game Rugby is the Original/Embryonic game of American Football..So in reality it Should be called American Rugby...check out a rugby league pitch & markings, ball...that proves where the silly north American game comes from.
I was 4 years old and I picked up my first soccer ball after that game and played my first season. And I have yet to be on a team with the composure and love for one another and the game.
Coming here for some comfort after that devastating loss in the 2023 World Cup. The 1999 World Cup team played with so much heart and humility…and they could make their penalty kicks. This was missing from the 2023 US team with the exception of Alyssa Naeher and a few others.
"What about all the little girls that want to be just like you?" Seriously? If they hadn't been such a tight knit group of teammates, I wonder if she would have been able to handle it as well. The comradery they had together gave her that support system she needed. That they all needed to support each other.
i played in late eighties and early nineties because my friends played the game. I never worked so hard and in pain then high school soccer. Our coach would make us do 6 inches and then throw the soccer ball on our stomachs. He was hardcore.❤😅
Really weird watching this as in Australia this revolution in sport with women's Soccer, Rugby and Aussie rules foottball all attracting huge interest right now, some 20 years after these trailblazers in the USA...
I was like who thought this sitting arrangement was a good idea? Yeah, these women in their 40's who ran their legs off for 15+ years would love to sit on the ground for a couple of hours lol.
As much as I love the current crop, they don't hold a candle to the '91ers. Lots of charisma, always having fun and not taking themselves too seriously. But at least it might be progress to say that womens soccer now has its own domestic abuser. (Solo)
Briana Scurry is lucky as heck she didn't have the referee from the 2011 U.S.-Brazil match. She was about four feet off her line, which should have given China a retake of the PK.
NightHawk12to81 I don't disagree with you. However, athletes are going to push rule limits until they're called on it. It's no different in any other sport. They're going to try to gain any edge they can. It was still a great game though!
I was watching Soccer 99'ers last night on ESPN, and seeing the footage I noticed that Scurry totally came off her line to illegally make that one save. I came here to see if anybody else noticed.
Lirst Fast Scurry literally said right after they showed the clip that she totally did, but that she would have saved it again if they called it back. Gotta admire the confidence!
It is hard not notice of course but somehow i have a feeling that she would have saved one more time even if the shot was retaken. Or from some other kicker. Like it was meant to be)...
