Six social media junkies put themselves in the hands of a psychologist specialising in digital addiction to try to break free of the clutches of social media platforms such as Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram and Twitter. As a first step, they agree to have their accounts frozen and go cold turkey for a week. How long can they survive without their fix? What difference does this forced abstinence make to their lives?

Can't the moms SEE how much their children need them and WANT them around?? It's SO heartbreaking 💔 that you have to tell an adult woman, a mother no less, that her CHILD is Infinitely and monumentally MORE important than her damn phone 😞😤😡👎🏼 I cry for the innocent children that just want the love and attention they so richly deserve from their mothers 😭 They can't just take their mothers phone away… They just have to deal with it and it's heartbreaking 💔

You do realize that the older generation has criticized the younger one for as long as civilization has existed, and that the next generation has never turned out to be how the older one says it is? Just because you can’t accept that they are different does not mean that you should generalize millions of people into one stereotype.

Thea Gray: People generalize themselves. No one would be criticizing them if they weren't portraying these attitudes. And plenty of young people see the problem with superficiality. MsYogaGrrrl You put way too much stock in what "professionals" say. You don't need someone to think for you. Use common sense. Anything can be an addiction. It's defined by the compulsive behavior to do it over and over despite having negative repercussions on the other areas of your life. Look up the definition to addiction and you will notice it is very broad.

STFU. No one has to feel sorry for anyone with an addiction. I never do, and I wouldn't for anyone in my life either. No one makes you get addicted to anything; YOU do it. I suppose when you feel as cut off as he must feel, that little bit of attention is a game changer in feeling a little less lonely. It's not about him being deluded. It's about him feeling connected. You don't need 1m+ followers and hundreds of likes to feel that. Out of all of them, I felt the worst for him because you could see it's his way of feeling part of things.

what I'm seeing here is that while social media is a big influence in our lives, but when challenged with real self-improvement, people will always succeed in bettering themselves and that gives me confidence in the world. It is incredibly hard to face an addiction/fear and these people proved that their lives can exist separately from their addictions. Kudos! Especially to the mum who can pay attention to her kids instead of to her phone
@texascher
@texascher 6 лет назад
Social media addiction is only a symptom of a much bigger problem, which the therapist did expose when they were in group together. Most of them are missing the attention/affection of a parent or someone who was a meaningful person in their childhood. She's showing them that they CAN get through life without clinging to the desire for this missing affection as it is misplaced desire. You can never replace the affection you didn't get, you have to move on & face life as it is, without the crutch that is social media. Once they realize how good life can be without it, they will find their strength to overcome the unrealistic need for social media.

In this everyday life, I've realized that the people that constantly use social media become ten times stressed than they were before. So I took it upon myself to do some research. On top of that, I’ve realized that while using social media and the many people I’ve come across, they’ve revealed that deep down not all of them are happy and most use social media to escape reality. I want to help those who only use social media to get away from the world. And make their conditions known since it could harm them and make them do something they’ll regret in the future. What are your thoughts? Do you agree or disagree with this standpoint? (This is for a project but still I'm curious).

I commend these people for sharing their stories. People with compulsive obessive disorders can fall into any addiction from A-Z. I gave up many Social Apps myself. People do not know how to interact in the real world and sooner or later will act Zombie like ...and how sad this will be . I deleted my Facebook account 4yrs. ago and my Mocospace account I havent been there for 3.5yrs. I couldnt deal with all the Fear of missing out and the Anxiety that went along with it. Whatever vices people have if it isnt done in moderation it will make you an addict to it.

I'm honest to god am glad I never got into social media that much. Sure I have an Instagram and Facebook account but it's got to a point where I've forgotten the password because I rarely ever signed in...not like I post much on there anyway...RU-vid for me has become my go to entertainment hub since TV is boring with nothing but dramas playing and...Netflix is too darn expensive for a college student like me XD My phone is basically my personal library, the most frequent websites you'll ever see me in is usually sites like audible. I barely use social media but I do waste too much time on RU-vid. So I can't really judge these people. But I think maybe people need to focus and spend time on what they really want out of life and their purposes in life, which would in turn prevent them from wasting their lives on frivolous, useless self-indulgence via social media. I hope if people really reflected on what is important in life being narcissistic wouldn't be included.

I love these kinds of videos, because along with the justified ridicule of the social-media obsessed, you also get the self-righteous commenters who whine about "BLUH BLUH THIS GENERATION'S SO SELF-OBSESSED" (not remembering, apparently, that exactly the same thing was said about their generation once upon a time in one form or another), and the ones who insist on bragging about how little they use social media, as though that makes them better than the ones that do (even in moderate amounts). Protip: If you're bragging about how little social media you use in the comment section on an anti-social media obsession RU-vid video, then you're just as guilty of seeking out dat sweet, sweet validation-dopamine as everyone else.

And why do people go online on their phones,so much?I find that doing things online on my phone takes twice as long as its does on a computer,and the fact that I can only upload to Instagram using my phone makes me want to use it,less. Hey. Don't blame FB, Twitter, IG etc. They are just tools. Use them only If or When you want them, and Responsibly. Additionally, it is not a must you have an a count in all social media sites. Personally, I see no reason why I should be on IG, Snapchat, Telegram, Tumblr, etc. I don't even TikTok or Zoom. Twitter and Reddit are just fine for me. I use them only once in two weeks. I use RU-vid mainly to get some education (tutorials) and documentaries. Just be responsible and act as per your desires; not to please people. No one really cares about which restaurant you were in this afternoon. Neither do they care about your black socks or sick cat.

As I'm watching this I am on my phone scrolling through the comments and I must say...There is a lot of criticism here, judgement calls and valid points made too. I think we are all guilty of this in one way or another. If we are watching this story on RU-vid and leaving comments here, accessing the internet while engaging in social media, then who are we that makes us different from them. I think it's a measure of a certain degree of separation from one addiction to another that varies for each individual. I think when one becomes addicted to something, they let that addiction take control. Then they may not even notice the damage that is being done around them. For ex, a crying child with a mom who is ignoring her because she is too busy on social media to pay attention to her child. When it starts to become a habit, then it becomes a problem for others around you, but you don't really notice it until someone points it out to you. That's how addiction starts and the problems they create. Addiction is addiction, whether it's an addiction to social media, or shopping or gambling to even drugs and/or alcohol. If it's a problem that is consuming your life and you can't stay away from the "high" of it, or the stimulus it brings you, then you let that addiction take control. Once addiction takes hold of someone, they begin to lose focus and attention to their life that is going on around them. I would like to add though, and I am not trying to sound judgmental, but I would just like to share my thoughts about this story. I am from an older generation because back when I was a kid we didn't have internet or social media access. Times have evolved since then, just as they did from the generation before mine. As the times change our society does too. The individuals in this film look like they grew up in a generation where internet access was exploding, then came social media. They grew up in that era, when electronics were beginning to take over the world. It's a little portion of how we are becoming a dumbed down society. The vast use of social media today is phenomenal! There are 2.34 billion people world wide that access social media daily. Somewhere among those 2 billion people are probably an average of about a million or so who are addicted to it. Yet, the addiction rate with other habitual behavior can be greater, or less. I don't know, but I know this. Social media I think is here to stay. It's the entire world wide web that entangles us all and social media is just a link into that web. I agree in part with the comment about the difference between having your head buried in a book rather than a phone. I agree that a good book opens the mind. Except there are electronic books now too. So many people are reading electronically now more than getting the actual book. However, we can do the same over the internet too, with anything. Most peope read the news over the internet too. The same news they would get from the daily paper. I think it's the behavior and how we use social media that makes a difference. I think the problem today with people and their phones and social media, is that, it can distort ones perspective between reality and cyber space. Many people do get wrapped up in their phones/tablets whatever electronic device that they are using that connects them to the web. It's how we use social media and our interactions with the rest of the world- wide web that makes a difference. How we engage in it and how often that we do. Nowadays it's almost hard to distinguish which is real and what is fake or altered or even manufactured anymore. Some people believe the "fake news" is real and others might think that the real news is fake. Heck, once a video goes viral and it hits the web, it's suddenly altered from it's original source. The news does it too, it's edited for "entertainment" purposes. There's also scammers out there too, and many people fall victim to being catfished over social media. The internet is our connection to other happenings around the world. Whether it be, facebook, twitter, Pinterest Reddit or 4chan. Perhaps this could be a cautionary tale about the hidden dangers of social media. I think we often forget, once it's out there, it's out there for the whole world to see. Just my thoughts.
