Thanks for showing the example of motivational interviewing. There was one thing at the beginning that could have been improved. The client made the initial statement about not needing any help. The interviewer did not acknowledge this. She just proceeded in the interview.

I loved the affirmation you gave about how you saw how she was as a person through her actions as a single parent. :) I think I would add a question asking what would make her feel more supported in her life taking care of her baby. And then from her answer, you could ask if you could share the support your organization can help with (asking permission/for advice). Thank you for sharing MI with others! Very helpful. :)

This was very insightful. I just started studying towards earning my Transformation Specialist Certification through the ISSA, and this seems to be a huge part of the course. I am a Certified Fitness Trainer and so I know this will be a huge asset to further motivate my clients to make behavioral changes. Thank you for sharing.

Hi Jasmine. I have an assumption. What if Mary does not want to engage because ,she feels that her child might be taken to an oohc? How do you convince her to trust your services, given that she grew up in a care home?
@JasmineAmaa
@JasmineAmaa 5 лет назад
Onyinye Sylvia id find avenues for her to disclose difficulty she’s having with her baby then get in that way. If she still says no, its not compulsory at this stage for her to be involved so id leave her with my details should she change her mind. If it were compulsory then id have to let her know it has to happen so let’s discuss how i can make her time with me worthwhile. Hope this helps x

As an Australian, the real question is whether you can meet the visa requirements to come over here and work. If you're under 30, you might look at a working holiday as an option (although noone knows when the borders will reopen). If you haven't studied your social work degree yet, you could opt to study as an international student in Australia. This would help you understand the systems down in Australia, help familiarise you with what organisations are available. Its not particularly difficult to get a social work job in Australia if you have a social work degree, but you would be at a disadvantage if you haven't lived in Australia, or if you don't have some ties to minority groups. I work with social workers in my role in a hospital, and they never have trouble filling positions. But social work is rather poorly paid in Australia. If you studied for a social work masters you could go the case management route. But given that social work isn't on the skills shortage list, its best to speak to an immigration lawyer to see what your options are.

I considered a move to Australia too. I have a friend who moved out there and was put off by his opinion that the people are unfriendly, snobby and racist.
