A strong male/female relationship, even if just friends, is a great union. I hope our society can turn away from this battle of the sexes and instead embrace love for each other.

It's so much more of a problem than you speak! My 60 year old husband who acts like a rebellious teen and disrespectful to me as if I'm his mother! His mother was disrespectful to him, so he believes he can talk to such a way! I asked him to take the lead in our family, and he told me he didn't want to lead! His mother was a feminist in the 60s who used the movement to emasculate her husband and sons.

Thank you for this, Rabbi Jacobson. My father was an emotional mess. He had CPTSD from his childhood in war and his explosions were terrifying. I went to my mother for emotional support (although she didn't give me any because she was a narcissist and she enabled my father with liquor and porn) and for decades I believed that men couldn't feel empathy or sympathy for others. I thought that men couldn't love because showing love showed weakness. I thought, until I was probably in my 40s, that men only had feelings that were hateful or cruel, and that only women were capable of tenderness while men were all action and strength and had zero capability for tenderness or affection. It took me moving to Mexico and finding love and support from a man with strong ties to his indigenous culture to learn otherwise. He taught me that men are indeed capable of every emotion that women have. Our culture is sick and twisted. It keeps us separated by hatred and fear. I feel sad for the men that learned that they're not supposed to cry or appear weak by showing any emotion. I want to hug all of these poor souls and teach them that crying is necessary and that women WANT to be there for them. We need them and we need them to be healthy- even if that means that they cry in front of us (not all the time, of course!). Crying shows emotion and we yearn to be emotionally connected. We want partners, men who are able to share all of their thoughts and feelings with us, even the 'weak' ones. Every human being needs someone to mirror them back to themselves in a healthy way. Sharing our fears with people who care about us is the only way to defeat them.

There is an obvious difference between men and women as there is between testosterone and estrogen. There's nothing wrong with having ideal stereotypes, so long as we can celebrate variations on a theme.

Why did acknowledging these differences in men and women become the Issue. I thought we all learned that back in sixth grade health class with testosterone and estrogen cartoons. And for some reason it's become acceptable to oppose male and female as if that's gonna undo millennia of male patriarchy.

In terms of men crying, my experience is the opposite of what your suggesting. I'm told that I'm told men shouldn't cry, but I don't recall anyone ever saying that.

Im not Jewish either but it all makes perfect sense to me.

Rabbi I always love your topics and how you explain things. Thank you for what you do. In this matter, I do have a different understanding most likely due to my own personal experiences and observations I have made throughout the years. Though I do know that the past has shown men can take extremes when they have too much power, the opposite seems to be showing it’s ugly head as well. The reason I believe it is divinely ordained that men are seen as necessary to guard their emotions is clearly seen through many studies that show how women, weather known or unknown to themselves, tend to lose respect from men that show to not be stable and stoic within their emotions. Their nature is attracted to a man that can provide for her and be her rock. When men become too weak or tend to show too much emotion as women tend to more naturally do, women do not tend to feel safe with them because they can see they don’t have their stuff together well and means that women have to be more of the stronger type to keep the relationship stable. I believe it inverts the rolls Gd made for us especially in the Torah in Beresheet 3:16, where it says of women, “your desire shall be contrary of your husband, but he shall rule over you.” Todays society seems to push away this mandate/instruction or condition that occurred after their initial disobedience. So though there are many women that have the capacity to be leaders or more masculine traits of such, I don’t believe it is Gds intention that that become the norm or become what is right. Instead I believe He calls us to be leaders by example. But the fact that most times (not always) women seem to have less control of their emotions, is perhaps one of the many reasons it seems He intended Men are to lead their households. There are many other reasons that we can observe today. For instance women seem to be good at seeing short sided goals to create their nest egg homes to bring them the comforts they need to create a setting of the home. Where it seem most men tend to have a higher more broader vision of a future that may leave a legacy and a future to his progeny. So though I very much agree with you that we all have feelings and very deeply and rightfully so, history has shown us plenty of evidence where women loose respect for the appearance of weaker or emotionally driven men. They have shown to seek a rock by their side that can be her protector in time of her weaknesses, periods, when in labor, etc. So I agree that it is true we should not feel shame or afraid to show our emotions, my personal experience and that of a many men I’ve observed, when we do so, women become disappointed and uninterested in us much sooner. They show a big majority to loose respect for us. This it’s created a silent rule for men to not show said weakness or it will root it’s ugly effects. So I believe men should speak to other men of their emotional matters, where they can truly receive a clarity of understanding by other men that also face the same societal structure that most women cannot understand as thee truly is a high pressure for men to become high achievers to be able to provide for their women. They should show a form a stoic ness to their women so that they feel safety from their man and not loose respect for him. It is a very difficult fine line most men have to deal with. Though it may not be as clearly observable in observant Jewish circles, as their is a very good structure and order in the faith of our creator, the rest of the world still struggles to have such high standards especially with all the negative influences life tends to offer and tempt our younger societies with short cut ways to high end life or how easy it is for women especially in todays societies to get easy access to high value men through the use of technology and social media. It makes it much more difficult for average or regular men to be noticed or appreciated when society has made such an attempt to the easy life for women that tend to aim at higher statuses, where men are forced to earn that high status to be able to be recognized. As women aim higher while men aim lower. We seek women that seek to admire and respect us for who we are. Where women seek a safety net of who can be their best bet of a provider. So I see this in a pretty different light now as time and experience has taught me a much bigger view that I did not understand before. I use to believe very much as to describe here as I saw no issue with it. Experience and observation of the majority tendencies has shown me a much different view. So I have come to the conclusion that there seems to be a reason why Hashem, taught and instructed us to lead and why he taught and instructed women to follow. Just as theirs is a heavenly order of Gd above man kind, it seems to me, he seeks to reflect that same order here on earth as we also do with our children. Very deep and difficult topic this one. So I would ask to meditate on this a bit and possibly look into what the world is currently crying out these days as we enter into new birthing pains of a rapidly growing in knowledge society. Where parameters and orderly structures are being challenged and leadership roles competed for as a feministic society has now shown clearly that it doesn’t simply want to become an equal as I believe we are in spirit, but it seems their is an underlying secret evil hidden behind an apparent agenda to take over the roll of man and hand it over to women. Which I believe is contrary to our instruction and a similar situation that happened at Gan Eden and the chaos that came with it. I believe the recent wokeness we have observed where it has become an apparent new norm to break the nucleus of the family, empower “liberalized” women to seek instant emotional gratification, a demand of equal outcomes without equal standards to grow, has caused what we observe today with transgenderism, the attempt to kill our young from even being born, and making it normal to allow our governments to dictate that children that are not fully matured to make big decisions can choose to alter and mutilate their reproductive systems. This has broken the fabric of our society. And it seems mostly driven by this feministic agenda to not just become an equal but to become a challenger of leadership. Now this is not to say that Hashem has not and will not provide us with Heroins in times of need and especially when their is a lack of leadership or roll models of manly men that seek to honor their rolls, because we do observe there are women that will fulfill this roll when there is a lack of men, but I believe that is the exception and not the intended rule He created. Much love to you Rabbi for your boldness in diving deep into these updated trends of our time as they are not always easy to navigate, and thank for stepping out of the comfort zone to explore the deep seeded issues at their core.
