When the weather turns warmer, it's time to start talking about one of the most contentious issues I've ever encountered in menswear--socks or no socks? People argue about this with the passion and conviction usually reserved only for arguments about politics, religion, or sports. The sockless thing has been something I've wanted to bring up on the channel for some time and, now, here it is!

There are two common arguments the anti-sockless camp likes to cite for always wearing socks:
1. Your feet will sweat and your shoes will stink
2. It just looks bad
The first of those, I can get behind. The second, not so much.
Let's be clear here, though. The sockless look is just that. It's a look. And it's a look that is an illusion. Should you wear socks? Yes. But they should be no-show socks. For me, the sockless look is cool both literally and aesthetically--nothing around your ankles keeps you cooler and it just looks cool.
That's my opinion and I'm sure we've got MANY more opinions out there. Looking forward to everyone chiming into the discussion.

Women sweat a lot less than men, that’s why they can wear shoes without socks. If a guy did that, he’d have sweaty / irritated feet. It’s not fair! I agree! 😝

It's 100% context, I tend to dress conservatively even with my more casual looks so no socks is not what I like for me. But on other men it looks just right, when I see your summer looks with no-show socks it looks just amazing! Keep up your great work

Hi Brian. I enjoy your content. Thank you. I pretty much agree with you here. It just took me awhile to get used to it. My big issue is that I never find no show socks as comfortable and cushiony as regular socks. That being said, I think Stance and Bombas are the best I’ve found. Invisisox come in 3rd. Will have to Check out your suggestion.

totally agree w/ you about the practicality and effectiveness of no-show socks. I got the no-shows you recommended and am a huge fan...as is my girlfriend. So much so that she stole all 5 pairs I had leaving me to replace them. Only thing I will say is that work well for narrow or normal width feet, but for wide feet you might have to go with a different brand

Definitely requires a more tapered pants for the look but I personally love the look, especially when going jacket-less because I feel it balances out the look. Oh, no-show socks are a must of course!

Since Cavaricci jeans tight rolled with loafers the early 90's, I have adored the sockless look and still do to this day (minus the tight roll and the Cavaricci's of course)

One more point of view I’d like to throw in - depending on the type of shoe... A loafer looks awesome without socks (boat shoes included). A laced dress shoe is much harder to pull off without socks. Not impossible though.

Hi Brian!I always go for no show socks whenever im going for the sockless look.However the problem i usually face is that the socks vary in size and design depending on the brand and do show a little from the sides.I have so far tried J.Crew,Banana Republic and Sperry.Would love to see your list of favorites.Thanks!

Fave no-shows are Bombas (altho a little too $$$) and M&S (very affordable). I have a mix of low cut for loafers and regular for sneaks/full cover shoes. I also mix up the weight of my no shows depending on occasion and desired comfort.

Brian, you're a bit younger than I am (I'm 53) but I remember when the Miami Vice look was in style in the mid-late 80's. Done right with a VERY casual trousers and lightweight jacket a sockless look can be pulled off...by some people. I don't have the charisma to pull it off..but someone like yourself could make it look really sharp.. I'm not a fan of sockless if the suit is darker in color or more formal or structured (for say a business environment). An evening out to dinner with my wife, to a lovely restaurant in an open air park would be the perfect setting for a sockless evening. Good discussion point. I'll enjoy reading what other gents have to say on this topic.

My favourite no show socks are from the English manufacturer Pantharella. They are really comfortable and they don't slide down due to some sort of rubber in the heel area.

I’m certainly glad you addressed these sentiments in your video. I was raised old fashioned by a dad that cringed at not wearing an undershirt under a tee shirt. I see both sides of the argument. However, as an avid church goer, I tend to adorn myself with socks if I’m suited with a tie. I just feel that my ensemble is incomplete without a pair of thin solid colored over the calf socks when I wear a suit. On the other hand, during hot summer months, in a less formal setting I may opt for no show socks with a linen suit with no tie, or if I’m wearing a pair chinos and a polo. That’s just me though

One thing that I think could’ve been mentioned....one main key to going “sockless,” (i.e. no show socks) is tailoring. Your tailor has to taper the leg of your pants so that they graze your calves and not break or sit on your loafers. Otherwise it looks a little sloppy and unintentional in my opinion.

I like the look, especially when trying to go more casual. My problem is that I'm a size 14, so even stretchy no-show socks don't make it all the way around my heel. I end up getting blisters on the rear of my heel. Probably should invest in some better shoes, but it almost *always* happens. Any thoughts on no-shows for larger feet?

As some gentlemen commented below, I don't like to go sockless (or even with no show socks) if I am wearing a suit. Otherwise in summer I enjoy the sockless look (100% use no show socks). You just need to be aware of the setting. I wouldn't walk into a meeting with a bank's CXO in London even in the heights of summer, sporting a sockless look.

Hello Brian, I think the no-socks look looks the best with shorts (actually, it's pretty much the only viable option if you are wearing shorts). I just think that some people overdo the suit+nosock look, I find that wearing a full suit without socks creates a "clash of formality" that's just "too much". What's wrong with thin socks and nice oxfords to go with your suits?

I think socks or no socks depends on the formality of the occasion. No socks would be much more casual. Saying it looks good or bad is subjective so it surprises me me it’s such a sensitive issue. Personally I have a much harder time with the suit with sneakers look! Great topic today

I never wear socks with boat shoes. Here's the key: Do not wear your shoes, sock or sockless, on consecutive days - maybe another day or so depending on how much your feet sweat. You need to dry them out, give them at the very least, 24 hrs. Also, you need to put newspaper or the tissue they came with back into them to absorb any moisture built up and also to keep their shape. Any smell you get is because your feet sweat a lot and you wear them too frequently.

I dont like that sock style either!!! A thick sock in summer with a crazy trend, boksers, shirts instead of t-shirt . Only crazy style . Feel like something, kitch without taste and style.Walk like a weirdo.

Sockless. More comfortable and cooler in hot weather. I don't wear them 8 months out of the year because of where I live. San Antonio is not the most fashion forward city so I'll get asked about not wearing socks. My answer most of the time is "I can only afford the shoes or the socks." The expression tends to be priceless.

I agree, I think the ankle will always have a place in a stylish man’s arsenal. I love no show socks! The degree to which perscriptivism has infiltrated menswear via those who cling to rules and “how to be stylish” videos running rampant on RU-vid alike is stifling actual style. That’s not to say I don’t make style mistakes, but I would argue using someone else’s cookie cutter does not make you stylish no matter what you end up wear, or how you do so for that matter.

I have been wearing my sneakers year round without socks even in the Winter time. (I hate wearing socks) for at least 35 years and never had any serious problems, even though my feet stink just a little bit. I do wear sandals all day this time of year (I usually wear those athletic sandals between the months of mid March through mid November, and even my sandals will make my feet stink now and then. There are some sneakers where you can take out the insoles to wash them (that is only if they are machine washable) so the insoles can stay clean, and not stink.

I'm in the socks camp. Sock-less look is fine with chinos and loafers in the summer. But the exposed ankles with a complete suit is just an eyesore! Maybe it's the OCD in me, but the look just feels incomplete. Beautiful on the top 90% and then the exposed ankles just shows a glaring disconnect to the whole ensemble. We talk about rules for patterns and color matching to point out the elegance that results when there is harmonious flow between these elements....and then we see the exposed ankles. It's like hearing the record-scratch interrupting a beautiful melody. This is why I cannot love the no-sock look, and why it is such an eyesore. To each his own.

I live in Northern Virginia. From mid-February to late October I wear no-show socks about 99.9% of the time. My favorite brand so far is from Steve Madden. They never slip off, and they are completely hidden. I HATE when you can see the no-show sock peaking out the shoe.

When the warmer weather starts I always tend to wear ankle socks or no show socks depending on the shoe I'm wearing. I love wearing loafers and I have never worn them without no show socks.

Paul A Hello Paul. I experience that with the new driving Mocs I purchased. The Stance and Bombas I own both showed on the top of my foot. By the way those two brands are very comfortable. But the Invisisox I got on Amazon work well.

Honestly, i like the feel of not wearing socks in loafers and they dont stink after. Maybe because i have perverated leather sides and replacable insoles. I also love the look. The weird part is that if i wear nikes even with socks, it reeks hard.

Once you've gone with no-show socks there is no going back. I will say its hard to pull of the look in a business situation. I live in Toronto and last winter there were a lot of guys doing the sockless look and I thought that was crazy.

Unless I'm dressing formally, I am going sans-socks (with no-show socks) 100% of the time in summer. It just looks and feels right to me. I think Brian has mentioned this before, and I like it: if you're wearing a tie, wear socks. Otherwise, I let the weather dictate.

This is a great topic. This is also a concern to me too. I am a huge fan of a no show sock. Since I lived in the Philippines and the hot season here is just like hell. Anyways, I always wear a shirt paired it with a loafer or espadrille, and no show sock is just amazing. What do you think? Is it right or what? Thank you and more power.

I found the best compromise is actually thick no show socks. I think fruit of the loom makes them. They’re cheap and comfortable, ends up being a dollar a pair. They don’t fall down. The only drawback is you can just see the slightest bit when wearing boat shoes, but only from certain angles. Most angles you can’t see them. Quite a tiny compromise. Also when taking off my sneakers in the locker room, they don’t look like lady ballerina shoes like most do.

I do think low cut socks look terrible in boat shoes, they need to be no shows, just thick ones. They keep feet drier than the lady style one do. The thin lady style type actually made my feet smell like my grandmother’s when she used to wear that nylon type years ago. Who wants that, no one I would think.

I found that Calvin Klein has a few variation of no-show socks. They have a fuller coverage nude colored version I like the best. My problem is my golfers tan line which can really look funny!

Try a lot of shoes sockless and with no show socks . My opinion is ....It depend of the shoes. For example boat shoes or special mocassin suit for barefoot and high quality geox with talc powder . White sneakers is ok and very sexy sockless for one or two hours getting used to your shoes at the beginning but for an all days no show sock are the best choice . i m convcted tha the special one shoes are not still created for us .... Full leather shoes,and wool sole and of course the counter of the shoes are more important ..... For sneakers , wearing sockless ll damage your shoes ... But It's more important if you hate sock , to wear shoes barefoot as we do improvement when we do regularly some sport activities , After 4/5 full days with shoes sockless you are super ok to try all kind of situation.

I wear some loafers and all of my boat shoes (keep in mind boat shoes are designed to be worn barefoot however it's not a style rule violation to wear them with socks) completely footless. I do not mind the sweat and I feel a bare foot helps the cork liner to better form to the foot. I love the no sock look; I have been known even to sport it during the cold months here in upstate NY. I like the ability to just kick off my weeejuns or sperrys at the door. Lace ups I typically opt for no show socks. The sockless debate is simply a question of personal preference not a style rule debate as it is often billed.

I generally go without socks at home most of the time. However, when I'm going out to anything more then just a quick run to the store, where I'll be in and out in 5 minutes(At least in theory) Or am going somewhere where I know I want to make a good impression, I put he socks on. That said my shoes of choice this summer are boat shoe, which are casual by nature, and lend themselves to no socks.

Lol! My anti - no sock shortlist: Shoe hygiene. Absolutely not with a suit or in a formal setting. The bony and hairy ( and often untanned) male ankle is a very unattractive feature. The eye is drawn to the revealed ankle and hence detracts from the overall look of the outfit. You could choose to reveal your ankles when you are wearing shorts, or in a casual setting in a warm climate with casual trousers.

Its over 110 degress here, so its fine to wear no socks looks. my issue is when to wear it a non broken goodyear shoes. it will cut the back of your heel and it wont be comfortable a positive thing is that it wont stain your luxury socks from polish cream or wax especilay if you have brogues . all of my socks have stains

I've found that if your pair of shoes has a natural leather insole, even after a day in 90+ degree weather and without powder, they won't smell much at all. For me wearing no show socks actually makes my shoes and feet smell a lot worse than if I went sans socks.

It depends I think, like everything regarding style. Do you work at a conservative Wall Street law firm or in an advertisement agency? Is the weather sunny or not? Important situation or not? Personally I would not pull it of with a suit, but with shorts there is no alternative. With chinos, jeans etc. it really depends...

I have seen so many people. (women I particular) wearing the very short socks and you can barely notice them. My brother bought a pair od them for his shoes when going on holiday but the men's ones don't exactly no show like the womens so he had to go sockless. Being in the military I now the importance of socks and how the help the feet absorb sweet and protect your skin from the shoe itself. The sockless look is just a look that can be achieved with socks; therefore, socks for the win all the way. Wear socks your feet will thank you for it.

The no-socks style really aggravates me but like Brian, only in some cases. The issue for me is that those cases happen far too often. No socks are a casual look! They are absolutely not formal! But I see far too many people wearing super tight suits with loafers and no socks. Conor McGregor is a prime example, and he looks ridiculous in most of his suits. If you're wearing a suit and tie to an event, whether that event is in Vancouver or Cannes, you should wear socks. If you're wearing a tie, it's formal, and socks should also be worn. If you're wearing a suit to an event without a tie, that's casual and no socks in this case are fine. In fact, socks would look silly in this case.

With no show socks for loafers/drivers. I can't even slide my feet into some loafers without socks. With regular socks for other types of shoes.

The only time I wear shoes without socks is when I sport casual sandals during the summer. I did discovered if you wear slippers without socks a lot, they'll start to smell.

I’ve got a question. What about wearing slippers without socks? I recently got a pair of Ugg slippers and when I try them on with socks, they are a little on the too snug side, and when I wear them without socks, they feel more comfortable. I looked up the website and even on there it states that Ugg boots (I’m assuming goes the same with slippers) are meant to be worn without socks. I guess at the end of the day it’s all preference on that particular person.

I personally don’t think the sockless look looks good. In all the examples you showed, the lack of socks ruins the look for me. It largely has to do with the fact that every time I see someone with what looks like bare feet in shoes, my mind immediately conjures up the foul smell of feet after a day in shoes, as well as the feeling my feet feel like when I wear shoes without socks. It’s an immediate repugnant response. However, the look of socks with shorts isn’t so great either. So in the summer, I’m really at a loss for how to dress well while wearing shorts. I pretty much just have to skip summer when it comes to style.

Thank you for doing this. I also had to talk about it, because it was driving me crazy. A lot of the anti-no show guys usually get irrationally angry and name call saying nobody wants to see your girly ankles...but I say if you are grosses out by somebody's ankles, you have other issues you need to work on lol You don't have to personally like it but if you think it's stylistically bad...well, you put better than I could. Thanks for laying down the law as always, Brian!

in the summer, i where my white vans slip ons without socks. i dont really get sweaty naturally, but i spray my feet with spray deodorant and spray the inside of my shoes.

No show socks always fall off my heels. I can't therefore wear them. Anyone else have this issue?

Buy the bamboo socks with silicone strips in the heel.

I had the same problem when I started wearing them. I had to get the next size up and change brands. Fruit of the loom worked for me. They are thicker material. But they don't show and they stay on. They also will last through more wash cycles. Give it a try.
