What soc filmed in the 90s changed skateboarding forever, he deserves a spot in the hall of fame for all his work. Thanks for doing this boys, and if you see this, thank you Socrates.
He'll get it. I hope they do categories where filmer & photog are included. They will recognize. I've only seen acceptance speeches so I'm not really sure but Mofo was inducted. Why not Soc?
As a young skater living in London I always wondered who this mystery Socretes dude was for years. Glad to finally hear his story. He was so instrumental in the 90’s evolution of skate videos. Man I’m waiting for a Rocco episode now. That would be real epic! Please make it happen.
That was amazing! I always saw Socrates name at the end of these vids back in the day and just knew he was someone that got to be around and witness amazing history happen. Nine club please do more of this era of interviews including: Guy Mariano Shiloh Greathouse Chico Brenes Matt Shnurr Henry Sanchez Daewon etc etc etc I’m 43 and STILL skate to the memory of all the vids that Soc filmed. So good.
Socrates is such a legend behind the lens! This was a great interview. the dudes behind the scenes have such great stories. Thank you for your involvement in Lovechild! I was raised on that shit! Big ups to the Nine for giving us all the BTS goodness! #switchflipmanny4life
Wow, as regular listener, listening to this podcast and then you hear your name mentioned in the stories!! 🤣. -I have so many stories of that period of time filming for Love Child!! Also, back then I filmed on ROLLERSKATES for perfect control when filming lines or tricks. Those skaters lost their mind when I first put them on to film!! 🤣🤣🤣
Great episode! Love hearing the random off topic stories like delivering paper. The Nine Club isn't all about skateboarding, it's about getting to know the person behind the skateboarding, in my opinion.
Agreed. It seems like a lot of the guests feel bad about getting "off topic", but the real life stories outside of skateboarding are some of the best parts.
So glad to get a Soc ep, he's an OG! His name has been dropped in so many ep's & now we get to here the stories from the legend himself, so sick! As always thanks fellas, you're always killing it. #nineclublife
Great episode. The film/video/photo guys always have dope behind-the-scenes stories from the skate industry. Each little nugget of Rodney info. is precious.
48:00, i think my dad bought some of those blank boards...i remember back in that time era, he came home with boxes of blank boards, lots of world boards that were used, but good amount of blanks, remembering now, i know they had to come from world directly from a pro, no way he would stumble upon so many decks back in that time that wasn't from someone working there.
So sick to see Soc get emotional when he was talking about his career & being able to do what you loved for a living. A majority of people don't get that opportunity or don't take the opportunity. So it's nice to hear that he really knows how lucky he is do have been able to have had the career he's had & not take it granted!
Only just started this but I really hope he talks about hyper extending his elbow on that back 5-0 in big brother number two. That shit made my stomach turn when I was younger.
I grew up skating in the early 90's and always read the name "Socrates" in all of the videos (and mags) and never knew who he really was or what he actually looked like. I finally know, and his story was fucking incredible. Like Crob, the videos he was involved in helped shape me and my skateboarding, and my youth. I love this guy so much! Such a humble, nice guy. When he talked about feeling blessed to have lived his dream for the first 25 years of his life and how he fell into it and didn't even as for it, brought years to my eyes, no joke. I'm 40 and I'm still pondering what I've been put on this earth to do so that little tidbit really got to me.
2:31:30 That mix the blind section in Rodney Vs Daewon Rd 2 was absolutely AMAZING. My 12 year old mind was completely blown watching that whole edit, imagining how cool it would be to be filming ledge lines all smooth with an amazing instrumental mix in the background.
I've seen this dude skating with Daewon in Gardena, didn't know who he was then, but is cool to make the connection now. Daewon was skating with all the OG dudes, it got me really hyped, seeing all these 40 somethings skating and having fun like they did when they were teens. Gotta love skateboarding
Such a great informative episode, learnt a lot! Skate history lesson right here. (Also..) Mark Eaton is a legend in the BMX world, part of the Plywood Hoods, who did videos and invented a lot of tricks.
Soc talking about being able to live his dreams and not be an old dude, wasting away, wondering "who am I? what the fuck happened?"... that shit really got me. What a great dude.
I got a pair of DC graphics at Ross for 7 bucks. All black. Love to skate in em. Probably not a real skate shoe but they have awesome board feel. The cashier thought I switched the tag on em. She prob bought the same shoes for her grandson years ago & paid full price. Too funny. She looked at me like I was a criminal.
If I had a nickle for every time I saw his name at the bottom of a photo in a mag during my day then,..then,..well I would have enough to BUY EVERYONE A BEER!!!! Again, thank you all @The9 for everything you do.
Nerding pretty hard on this ep-thanks Nine Club. In the vein of filmers/photographers, how about Mike Blabac? I'm sure he has plenty of Kalis/Stevie/Love Park stories
Really interesting. Some more knowledge for skate bank. Love that this is another part of skating and such a big part of it brought together by a good dude.
Delivering news papers sucked. Did it before school when I was 13. Again, great episode boys!!! Soc has prob been mentioned more than anybody throughout. This was outstanding. "Skateboarding for the love of Skateboarding."
