Many scroll chuck manufacturers offer Soft chuck jaw blanks of nylon that allow you to create custom jaws easily to suit your specific needs. These soft jaws for lathe chucks are great for that one-off chucking as well as repeat use for a specialty woodturning project.
I upload new wood turning videos regularly so Ya’ll come back, hear?

That’s very interesting. While I’m not ready for something like this now I’m sure this video will come in handy someday when I get more experienced with the lathe.

Thanks again for Tips and Tricks I must have a dozen of the soft jaw each with specialized cut. Nothing could be easier to turn the exact profile needed and they last forever Can you leave a link to where you purchased the two different jaws, I’ve only purchased the red set of jaws. Again thanks

Looks like a good product to add to my arsenal. I just did a quick search and it seems they’re not available for Oneway.
@MikePeaceWoodturning
@MikePeaceWoodturning 11 месяцев назад
I thought they had some but do not see them on the Oneway site. They do have some flat metal jaws designed to hold wooden jaws you make.

pretty cool . wonder if you could make these out of wood . i would not trust them with big bowls or any thing but i bet it would work great with little boxes and so on .

Mike - I have made a number of accessories from HDPE cutting boards that I buy at the dollar store. I'm inclined to think that you could make something similar from that kind of material. HDPE turns very easily although the waste is very 'stringy'

Hi Mike, good tips. I purchased a set of these for my Nova a while back but I haven't modded yet. Watching your video has given me the idea of putting a bit of a taper profile on the outside edge to use as a jam Chuck inside small bowls along with the tailstock to help remove tenons. I can use the inside to grip smaller spindles then my standard jaws. I am wondering the purpose of the dowel you used, you didn't go into detail on why beyond saying it set an eighth inch gap.
@MikePeaceWoodturning
@MikePeaceWoodturning 5 лет назад
You want to have as close to a circle when closed as possible. But you want to be able to tighten a bit as well. The 1/8" gap gives you a bit of tightening room. I think you will be happy using it to reverse small bowls as you described.
@davidfriedman3962
@davidfriedman3962 2 года назад
I want to try making a live edge bowl, could they also be used as a jamb for live edge bowls? And if not do you have a recommendation to help hold small bowls to cut off a tenon? Thank you.
@MikePeaceWoodturning
@MikePeaceWoodturning 2 года назад
Your best bet is the tradtional way of using a friction chuck on the inside with TS support and cut the tenon to a nub and saw off. Details here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CIqCQxWUkTk.html

Great video, as usual. Unrelated question, what is the purpose of that triangular casting with a hole at the apex bolted to the back of your feedstock?
@stevehood10

Head stock, I typed in headstock evidently auto correct is being pedantic today!

It is designed to hold the safety cage. I did a video on this a while back.

Hi Mike, I don't know how much these plastic jaws are but unless they are very cheap (and I do not see that very often when buying lathe tools) why would you not just make some out of plywood or softwood?
@MikePeaceWoodturning
@MikePeaceWoodturning 5 лет назад
We know that one size does not fit all. Some folks like making things and some don't. Why does anyone buy a tool handle for an unhandled tool when they can simply turn one? Some folks have a problem, real or perceived, and they are more than happy to purchase a solution. For production turners making a living turning, their time is probably worth more than the cost of the nylon jaws, so buying the jaws is an easy business decision. I am not recommending making or buying since that depends on so many individual factors including skills, $ value of time, and mostly what do you enjoy doing.
@johnfithian-franks8276
@johnfithian-franks8276 5 лет назад
@@MikePeaceWoodturning I hear what you are saying and agree, but the less nylon that will one day end up in landfill the better for me.
