Home made machine to remove rocks from soil. Replacing soil in my city is expensive so I made the machine instead.

Great build Geoff. More specs would be helpful but your vid and description of pros and cons helped a lot. It's a real good place to start. Thanks for sharing!

Would have liked to have seen how you built it from the start. I like it over all. Spec's & design info would be great to add.

been watching a lot of these recently. one of the most clever ideas I have come across is to use really larger screens for the main unit, then slip in sleeves of finer mesh. that way, you can run the fines out first, then the pebbles, then the rocks.

This looks like the best soil trommel on youtube. Very well though out and planned.

I agree, Very well though out and planned. I hope the one I'm building will look half as good.

You're right. I knew I forgot something when I was done. :) I plan to do another video when I get the rock sorting thing working. Thanks for your comment.

I wish I’d seen this idea a couple of weeks ago, I’d thought about building a reciprocating one, I never thought of a cylindrical tumbler. Only last week I’ve just completed shifting and sifting approximately two to three tonnes of old soil mixed with rubble that’s been sat in a corner of the garden for around fifteen years. You’d think being an engineer I’d have come up with something to make it easier. However now the job is done, and I know how hard it is, I think I’ll base something on this idea, maybe something taller with a chute or a hopper to feed a wheel barrow or cart...

I sifted some soil using a Washing Machine spin basket with the holes drilled larger . and placed on a tilt , then powered by hand . When I got done I had some nice soil in my former Horse Corral and a HUGE pile of rocks beside it . My Garden was now 3 inches lower than it used to be . Plants sprouted quickly in that Horse Manure but Rabbits invaded . So I built a higher fence , replanted twice again . More Rabbits .Gave up . LOL

Where did you find motors and pulleys? What HP for the motor and shaft size?

Nice machine. I agree with the comment beneath too. But a fine modular idea, nice in wood.

Instead of the chute, probably a wide, closed rim added onto the back of the tromel would have worked better. It will turn with the trommel and dump the debris a bit further out. Excellent machine though. It looks as if the screen can't handle bigger stones, but obviously it worked just fine.

Kind of a lot of work for turf, I have the same and have a beautiful lawn. That's great work for a garden however!

I've lost control of this account so I stopped paying attention to it, sorry for the late responses: - Regarding a dull lawn. It's still a work in progress, I wanted to reduce the maintenance effort and wanted to fix all the problems in the yard before I started to do any landscaping. I'm also keeping in mind that the house will probably be knocked down when I sell it so there is no resale value to doing anything in that regard. You're right though. Comparing it to great art; I made the canvas. :) - I purchased all the hardware from Motion Industries. I got all the details from David Waltman's post of the same type of machine. The guys a Motion were very helpful, but the math they did for the long belt didn't work out, it ending up being too short. - the length of the trammel was 5 feet so 2.5 feet apart. Probably does need to be that long. 4 feet would be good then I could have used a 4 foot wide sheet of screen. - When I processed the pile of rocks though the machine I had to fix the screen quite often. Ultimately a sheet of punched metal worked really well. Some 3-5 inch rocks did go though the machine.

Hi. Thanks for sharing. Your trommel is A-1. I like how it's adjustable -- so you can "tune it up." Yes when you have a chance I'd also love to see it operating. I'm designing one now and weighing options on a few of the parts. Can you comment some on the casters/wheels you used. Do you have any regrets using these vs. lawn mower wheels. You said they jammed up some. Do you think the small casters you used are best or not? Also where did you get yoru bike rims and motor? Thanks again!

Hi, how does one determine the required size of the drums, e.g. I want to use two drums, each 6 and 10mm "sifting" openings, roughly 45cm-50cm diameter and 50cm long and the two joined together to make a total length of 100cm, can that work?

should have built it on minor incline to begin with then the shoot would have worked.

Your chute needs to feed soil into the cylinder rather than against the rim. Looks to me like you have too much hardware at the front of the cylinder to properly install a chute.

Die Motoren drehen nicht einstellbar mit einer konstanten Drehzahl, meistens zu schnell. Muss herabgesetzt werden, entweder per frequenzumrichter, oder eben einfacher und günstiger mechanisch
