Interesting new research shows that soil is not low in nutrients… The problem is something else. Take a look.

1:46 Soils are not depleted of nutrients-they are depleted of…
2:14 Why fungus is important for plant growth
3:19 The effects of modern agriculture
4:45 How to bulletproof your immune system (free course)
In this video, we’re going to talk about some interesting research that proves that soils are not depleted of nutrients-instead, there’s something else interesting going on.
The best predictor for plant growth isn’t the minerals and other nutrients in the soil; the best predictor for plant growth is the fungal-bacteria ratio.
As we use pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides on farmland, the soil becomes depleted of fungus. When this happens, the bacteria grow out of control. This leaves the crops with hardly any fungus and way too much bacteria.
Fungus plays an important role in breaking down minerals. Without fungus, plants aren’t able to absorb the mineral in the soil. This is why many farmers have to add nutrients to their soil.
You need a 1:1 ratio of bacteria and fungus to make nutrients soluble for plants.
How do low levels of nutrients in plants affect our bodies? We need both nutrients and microorganisms in our bodies to break down and utilize nutrients. Without these important friendly fungi and bacteria, you can develop a nutrient deficiency.

🌱🌱For anyone interested in starting their own vegetable garden check out the "No Dig "method explained by Charles Dowding. Tilling disturbs the microorganisms in the soil. No dig protects it all in the same way as the forest floor and you will have less weeds. In short, you put down some cardboard and about 4 inches of compost and you can plant right away. At the end of the season you add two more inches of compost and you will be all ready to plant in the spring. It keeps all these micro organisms in tact. I have started my own compost piles too so I know what's in it. Thanks Dr. Berg for the confirmation! 🌱🌱🌱

Excellent primer to Regenerative Agriculture Dr. Berg! I'd like to qualify the statement about "depleted soils" - the big problem we have is that centuries of tilling land has "depleted the microorganisms and fungal layers of the soil. The top soil with its nutrients has been essentially killed and washed away. Permaculture gardeners have known this for almost 100 years and there are many resources out there teaching us how to build up the soil rather than tilling down into the existing dead soil, growing food forests to rebuild the fungal network. Problem is big agriculture supported by companies like Monsanto, Syngenta, Bayer who seek profits over nutrition and stifle this information. People interested in this topic can search "soil food web" "no till gardening" "mycorrhizae" the Permaculture Research Institute......... This adds emphasis to the importance of buying from your local organic farmers who are practicing regenerative agriculture - it involves animal husbandry too! :)

Yep, that organic gardening is the way to go, we only need the nutrients from the earth, none of those man-made ones, like you know, ah, oh, ..... I can't think of What the man-made ones are, they are the things that are made in a chemistry lab....not made from anything on the atomic chart?

The problem is that most of the chemical cocktails used, kill everything else except glyphosate-resistant Roundup Ready GMO crops, bees are in grave danger, insect in general hey are important bird feed, as a consequence less birds and so on and on.... if you really want to know try a shot of Glyphosate and you'll know! 50 years ago many of the so called civilian diseases, allergies were hardly known today very common - how come, cause we are living a healthy life?

Food grown on soils with fungal and other microorganisms tastes amazing. I know this from personal experience. Fungi and bacteria also need food which I provide with mulch and compost. I then aearate the soil 2 weeks before planting in order to oxygenate the deeper parts and loosen the soil which helps fungal and microorganism growth. Direct sowing is more susceptible to pest damage but provides a healthier plant. I experiment with growing techniques and I will be releasing videos on my experiments in a few weeks.

My sister has been sharing similar information with me. She is a farmer in South Australia and has been on a quest to unlock a better, more productive way to farm. Fortunately she has access to large quantities of chicken manure from the paltry industry in Adelaide. Also they own a semi trailer that reduces the costs of transporting the tonnes and tonnes they require. The microbial health of their soils has improved immensely along with their productivity. She's pretty anti the idea of relying on cheap Chinese fertilizer and the side benifit of supporting the local product is a bonus to the economy as well. Also it looks as if some of the pests, particularly snails don't seem to like the new regime. She is excited to see how they compare to their neighbors in the coming seasons.

I once watched a doco on a type of fungus that acts as a network in the soil it uses plant and tree roots to pull nutrients from the plants from photosynthesis and in exchange it pulls nutrients from the soil and ends up sharing if with the plant roots. This was observed in forests and its massive right through large areas. I'm guessing the pesticides are killing off this net work and not allowing plants to absorb large amounts of nutrients from the soil.

I'm excited to hear more about this. I was taught to not plant the same plants in the same spot year after year ,and let the land rest for a time. Farmers don't do that. Even my grandfather planted potatoes year after year and they seemed fine.

Amazing, how Dr Berg keeps learning, and teaching us. I knew the soil need fungi etc to make minerals absorbable from Adelle Davis books. Same with our bodies, that makes sense!

I knew this already but it's good to hear you confirm it. There is a good book called, Grass: The Forgivenss Of Nature I didn't even get past the first chapter but it's got some amazing stuff in. One thing you'll find in that book is that carbonic acid is produced from decomposition of organic matter. Carbonic acid is also what is present in the soot that breaks down masonry chimney tops. That's why I throw a few small rocks in my compost pile. Without soil life, the only thing you'll take out of the field is what you put in it. Thanks Monsanto.

Thank you. Please compare HYDROPONIC versus AQUAPONIC versus SOIL grown plants with respect to the plant's microbiome? I have always suspected that hydroponic and aquaponic microbiomes yield lower quality produce as compared to produce grown in soil having an optimal microbiome.

Wow! This is VERY interesting news. For such a long time, many operated on the assumption that the soil was depleted of vital nutrients. Thanks for the new information.

This is fascinating! I grew up on a small family farm and grow garden now in addition to being low carb/keto. I'm wondering if this is the explanation for some of my plant growth problems. Am staying tuned👍

Feed the soil. The plants will take care of themselves. Soil is a habitat for living organisms.
